A crowd of roughly 200 noisy protesters gathered outside the Telus Convention Centre in downtown Calgary Tuesday to demonstrate against a noon speech by former U.S. president George W. Bush.
Blowing whistles and chanting "war criminal," demonstrators carried signs and shouted "shame on you" at people attending the luncheon event at a cost of $400 each.
One man was taken into police custody shortly before noon, apparently when he tried to enter the convention centre without a ticket.
Security personnel are checking each guest individually at the event.
Any public appearance by Bush, reviled in some circles for launching the war in Iraq and other aspects of the so-called "war on terror," was bound to draw protest. A group of Canadian lawyers petitioned the RCMP last week to bar Bush from Canada, citing torture and war crimes committed in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
In a letter to the RCMP war crimes section and copied to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff and other federal ministers and opposition MPs, the Lawyers Against the War group claimed that Bush is "inadmissible to Canada ... because of overwhelming evidence that he has committed, outside Canada, torture and other offences" as detailed in Canada's War Crimes Act.
The letter asked the Mounties to "begin an investigation of George W. Bush for aiding, abetting and counselling torture between Nov. 13, 2001, and November 2008 at Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, Bagram prison in Afghanistan, and other places."
It also asks the prime minister, attorney general and ministers of immigration and public safety to ban Bush for heading an administration that "engaged in torture and other war crimes against humanity."

Sad. There really is no cure for BDS.
You are *SO* right.
Our enemies are real.
More class in a discarded toe nail than 0bama’s whole body.
The Lefties are doing their best (hahaha) to make the war crimes accusations stick so they can sue him. Funny that they weren’t worried about “torture” when a Democrat was in office. We’ve been waterboarding for a long time.
“A crowd of roughly 200 noisy flaming cow flatulances...”
These people must have quietly panicked on the inside when Zero won the election, since their main focus has always been to protest only against Republican Presidents.
...at $400/hr.
Canada: A little piece of Europe in North America.
Michael Ignatieff can bite me.
I wonder how many of those morons were wearing Che T-shirts?
These people are absolutely deranged.
Jorge can’t buy a break!....
And these would be the same people telling me to “move on” about Obama’s birth certificate and Clinton’s lying under oath 15 years ago.
Canada: A little piece of Europe in North America.
Think twice before you slam Canada. There are plenty of Canadian Freepers on this site, including me, who don't take kindly to our country being insulted. Before you compare Canada to Europe, take a good look at who occupies your White House these days. What party does the Speaker belong to? Who is your Secretary of State? Why did the Republicans get creamed?
Some of those whack left Hosers have been out in the rain to long.
Yeah. Bush had to travel all the way here to find enough Moonbats for a decent protest against him. (Not only sarcasm; but also long-awaited gloating over the fact that Canada finally has a “right-of-centre” government; while the U.S. has ....)
Do you really think American wackos never protested against Bush? Please.
indeed.
In short we(they), put our money where our mouth is. I humbly offer this:
200 narcissistic, self loving, latte drinking wackos ain't us. (Chuckle).
I rest my case.
As for the Obamanation, well, perhaps we're on our way to an even bigger piece of Europe in North America.
Terror supporters.
One other thing rick,
Canadians have really thin skins.
Good call sir, we probably have been water boarding the wrong people for a long time and a lot of that blame resides with the “New Tone” a certain President tried to initiate in Washington in 2000.
I truly believe that GWB always tried to act in the best interests of the nation, but he was never a conservative and he clearly had a conflicted opinion about the role of a President. Both of those things have lots to do with how we got here.
You rest your case? What case is that? That deranged rabble sent out letters demanding that Bush not be admitted to Canada so therefore Canadians are comparable to Europeans? You’re an idiot.
Canadians have really thin skins.
Once again, you're an idiot.
Of course, American leftists protested against Bush. I hope you’re you suggesting that Canadians are no more to the left than Americans? Come to think of it, that may be the case with the elevation of BO, “the Messiah,” but before that the US populace was arguably more conservative than its Canadian counterpart. But I’m with you regarding Canada bashing. My mother was, and two first cousins are, Winepeggers (’pegites?) and Canada remains a great country.
So typical: The media focuses on the less than 100 protesters outside rather than the 1,500 supporters inside.
For an much nicer perspective on the Presidents time in Canada, read the following:
BUSH JOVIAL AND FRIENDLY AT CALGARY EATERY
By Deborah Tetley, Calgary HeraldMarch 17, 2009
[The article includes a bring a smile to your face photo of President Bush.]
http://www.canada.com/news/Bush+jovial+friendly+Calgary+eatery/1397776/story.html
I most certainly am not suggesting Americans are more to the left than Canadians. The point I was making to mojito is that a group of Canadian wacko lawyers who write letters and protest Bush’s presence in Canada are no more representative of Canadians in general than Code Pink, for example, is representative of Americans. If mojoto sounds off about these idiot lawyers and calls them what they really are, I’m in complete agreement with him, but he insulted Canada. I won’t stand for that.
I would like to point out however (love that phrase) that in admitting the former President George W. Bush into Canada, a statement was made. That statement simply put was that Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff could go and soak his head.
He is American educated and live for more years in America than Canada. The Canadian media is quietly mounting a drumbeat. This is for "Iggy" to bring change. They want him to oust Stephen Harper. Yes, blasted change. That wretched word.
Your work on Obama and his birth certificate being noted. Kudos.
Canadians opinions dont count here.
Much like their money.
You can protest and fume all you like, but Ignatieff is a Euro-socialist through and through, and shares the attitudes and affectations of the Euro-left elite. But saying Ignatieff isn't a euro-lefty is like saying that our beloved 0 is not a crypto-commie Chicago thug.
Furthermore, the Liberal Party, that Ignatieff heads as interim leader, by and large shares his anti-American, europhilic poses. And so do the people who elect them to office.
I'm sorry you have trouble accepting these realities.
Right with you on that. I wished I had read that before my last hasty post. Yeah, some of the media can drive the best of friends apart- and maybe they did. (rueful chuckle).

Hi Noob! Welcome to FR!
Where have I ever defended Ignatieff? You brought his name up, I didn't. So why would you imply that I was defending him when that's clearly not the case? How does your thought process work?
I agree Ignatieff is a Euro-socialist through and through. So what? We both agree on this particular point which, by the way, I find irrelevant to our disagreement. It's a moot point.
The original article referred to a letter written by wacko lawyers which was addressed to Ignatieff, among others. Your point seems to be that because this letter was written, Canadians are somehow comparable to Europeans.
Ignatieff's views are as much mine as Obama's, Hillary's, Bill's, Gore's, Byrd's, Maxine Waters', Pelosi's, Barney Frank's, etc., etc., etc., are yours.
I misread the original article as saying that Ignatieff and other members of the Liberal Party, along with the lawyers group, had authored the letter saying that Bush was a “war criminal.”
Disliking Ignatieff and the Liberal Party, and thinking that this was just the kind of thing Euro-lefty thing they would do, jumped easily to the conclusion that they had.
A more accurate reading on my part would have shown that they were merely copied on the letter, not its originators.
I called Canada a petit europe because I thought that the leader of the opposition and other opposition MPs were calling Pres. Bush a war criminal, a tres european thing to do.
This was not the case. They're bad. But still not as bad as Europeans.
I stand corrected and duly humbled.
Anyways, take care.
Death cures BDS pretty well
Canadians...the “other” undocumented Americans...
I bet they smelled. Never mind. No need to bet on that one. ;)
Why "so-called"?
Amen to that!
