Mark Sanford: Build From The Local Level
Newsweek ^ | 2009-03-07 | Daniel Stone

Posted on 03/16/2009 7:58:09 AM PDT by rabscuttle385

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford sees a strong future for the Republican Party, provided it's rebuilt in what he sees as the right way: on the local level, far from the halls of Congress and the GOP's national headquarters. Republican ideals haven't changed, he said last week, but he thinks the ways the party engages new people will have to. NEWSWEEK's Daniel Stone asked Sanford who's responsible to lead the party from here and what he thinks about the party's national leadership. Excerpts:

NEWSWEEK: In devising a new strategy for the party, where do you go from here?

SANFORD: There is an eternal tug of war within the party on where we go from here and how we find a way out. One camp says the key is to appeal to Hispanics and women and use technology more. The way out of the wilderness is to grow the tent. The other camp—and the one I fall in—says that you can build a big tent, but you have to make sure the poles can hold it up and that you're working from a good foundation. In many ways, a political party is nothing more than a brand. The great brands of time have succeeded in as much is that they've done what they say they're going to do. People buy a John Deere tractor because it does what it says they're going to do.

Sanford is the man, if he runs as the same person who has run SC for the past x years, we’ll be blessed with a great liberty loving candidate.

Isn’t Lindsey Grahamnesty from SC? Sanford needs to take Lindsey to the woodshed (though Lindsey may enjoy it).

“The great brands of time have succeeded in as much is that they’ve done what they say they’re going to do. People buy a John Deere tractor because it does what it says they’re going to do.”

That was Bush´s failure, and the reason Obama is in power.

yea that would be nice, the Club For Growth needs to mount a primary challenger to Lindsey Grahamn, we need a firebrand (like a Coburn) in SC. Another Demint.

The stability of America and our freedom DEPENDS ON preservation of LOCAL Gov’t control.

It starts with the family, then the local Govt, then the State, and only then, the FEDS.

Libs have it backwards. Everything comes down from the top. Intentionally or not, this is how you destroy responsibility and freedom.

I have been saying this for sometime. You have to start LOCAL and go from the botton with a strong foundation. Grow your party at your local County level, then state, and then you are a national force.

Top down doesn’t work and never will.

BTW, I was for Ken Blackwell who was a grassroots person.

Ohhhhhhhh, I like this man, too. A Statesman in the making? Quite possibly! Potential Presidential material? The Republican Party in the trenches is finding its voice. Politics is looking up for Conservatives.
