There is an argument to be made about single-parent households and single Moms. It should not be linked with Bristol Palin's private life. This meme of referring to the middle class or lower-middle class as "downscale" is crass. This sociological economicese slang gets really tedious. If they want to keep debating the Palin VP pick, leave Bristol out of it.

One might suppose an argument for Obama's condom funding and STD funding is about to be unleashed. Will there be an article about how Bill Clinton and John Edwards offer important "lessons" for upscale white trash adulterers, just to keep it honest? Is there anything as pathetic and boring as Bobos and urban yuppies gawking over the breeding habits of those they deem the lower classes? Must have been a slow day at Starbucks or the Ben&Jerry's stand.

Obama Says A Baby Is A Punishment

Dear God, is there no low too low for Frum.

Does he have the same agent as Scottie McClellan?

The socially conservative downscale voter is increasingly becoming a mirage...

...sort of like the fiscally conservative, socially moderate Republican that can win.

Crap. Obama got the “history” and black vote. Ten million more went blue in 2008 than 2004. He has crammed four years of Jimmy Carter into the first month.

What was it, five million less Republicans turned out in 2008 than 2004?

The only reason McCain wasn't the next Mondale was PALIN!

They didn't go to the rallies to see McCain.

So the RINO myth of the middle is just that, crap.

Hey, here's a thought, why don't we win? Put a conservative out there and see what a Reagan type will do.

Social issues are the only thing keeping the Republicans from becoming the Bull Moose Party.

” If we want to expand the party, we need to push social issues to the back burner. “

Your opinion. I disagree. Vehemently. I am getting involved, I will be a precinct committee officer and I will fight to prevent RINO watering down of the GOP Platform.

As a Catholic, while many of us are pro-life, the problem is that our own Church is run by a extremely conservative, almost ancient fundamentalist interpretation of Catholicism ala Gregorian Rite (or Pre-Vatican II). So you have a ton of moderates who are socially conservative on abortion, but alas have other issues that go way over the top and now that the 75 year old plus crowd is dying, so is church attendance (unless say in Africa or other third world countries). So I find a lot of parallels in what is happening to the Catholic Church and yes even in the Republican Party (particularly among strict conservatives who put up their hands over their ears on anything they don’t like to hear), See folks, it’s the moderates (not ones who are going to jump to Dems) but ones are conservative on some (but not all) issues that are key to producing a candidate that can/will win in 2012. Can you say Mitt?

Was he in subway or skateboarding accident recently? A recent head injury perhaps?

Back when we had that supposedly outdated "mental image" of American society you just didn't exploit the misfortune of a high school girl who got pregnant.

LOL, you have it backwards, the mainstream Diocesan Curias are run by aging liberals who have tried desperately to destroy the simple TRUTH of the Church by destroying the liturgy and Catechis. Thank God they are a dying breed and a younger, far more Orthodox Episcopacy is rising.

As for the Mittens and his flip-flops, sorry no. Another Eastern liberal is a certain disaster for the GOP.

When Cardinal Francis George moved to Chicago, he wanted to import more Polish and African Priests to work in the Chicago Parishes. The baby boomer Irish Priests balked at that plan. The Chicago Catholic establishment is happy with its liberal good ol’ boys club.

Isn't Bristol about the same age that Obama's mother was when she had him? Maybe there's a "lesson" there for the moderates and progressives who think a more liberal, pro-choice attitude on social issues is needed.

Bristol's mother is an A-list public speaker now. This idea of her becoming a homeless single mom, stuck in the poverty of single motherhood, is ridiculous. It's absurd that this discussion would be initiated by any educated adult. Anyone want to take a guess at how often 18-yr-olds "break up" with their boyfriends or girlfriends? I seem to recall even "upscale" ones do...

A dear friend broke up more than once, married the guy she kept breaking up with and has a fine family, children and grandchildren. This is a goofy story but it does bring out the RINO’s doesn’t it?

If we want to expand the party, we need to push social issues to the back burner.

Expand the party by further alienating the social conservatives, so even more of them stay at home on election day? Yeah, that will work really well.

When Republicans act like faux Democrats, Democrats win elections. Always.

Why is this the business of any person in America, other than the families of those involved.

Because the parties involved went on TV & gave interviews, including their (not so) well-reasoned opinion of abstinence. And because today the same parties issued a response to the story in The Star, rather than saying nothing, which is what people who don't love media attention do.

That's why.
