Of course if she was not a Republican’s daughter none of this would make a difference
Frankly, abstinence might not be “realistic”, but it’s still something I teach my girls. I give Bristol a big round of applause for not aborting her baby.
I know two people, whom I love very much, who did not get married because of a pregnancy. Dad was as involved from the beginning as a married father would be. They just didn’t want to make the mistake of marrying just because she was pregnant. 18 months later they wed, and just celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary.
Get lost, Frum.
A) Palin supporters didn’t care that her daughter was pregnant out-of-wedlock. In fact, they supported her decision to not abort it. It was the anti-Palin sorts that cringed at this.
B) The statistics on out-of-wedlock pregnancies is supposed to show that education is inversely proportional to OLW pregnancy. Not noted is that the more educated women get, the older they get and closer to ‘marriagable’ age. Percentages are of no value in this comparison.
C) McCain did not have a strong conservative message, social or fiscal. It was to the ‘right’ of Obama most of the time, but was very Casper Milque Toast. So Frum’s argument is fatuous.
things won’t look so bleak when the Democrats don’t have an ill-gained 10-1 spending advantage. With Bush hatred gone, Obama’s celebrity faded if not tarnished, and Republicans not accepting the horse collar of public funding thereby forfeiting the fund-raising war to the Democrats, Obama’s young and downscale multitudes are likely to find something better to do on election day. If Hannity’s “man on the street” interviews prove nothing else, they show it isn’t issues or a whole lot of deep-thinking that drove Obama’s victory.
Frum is part of the Romney's anti-Conservative and anti-Palin attack squad.
That comment does not make sense whatsoever.
great point
For many self identified Catholics, their commitment to the faith is largely rooted in tradition. Since they were born to Catholic families, they consider themselves Catholic - that’s all.
They may not be churchgoers. They may not sign on to each Catholic teaching. They may even not sign on to major Catholic positions. They are often ignorant of church teachings.
They are Catholics because they say they are, not because of any attachment to aspects of the faith.
“writer without talent.”
LOL. What was that article about anyway?
I call this the Irish-American Disease. They’re just the most obvious offenders, though.
David Frum, demonstrating once again what an ass he is.
We do NOT have to appeal to the round-heeled unwed mother set to win elections.
The GOP is a coalition of five major groups. You have Evengelicals and Conservative Catholics who vote largely on social issues, with the biggest one being Abortion. You have gun owners. You have fiscal conservatives, who feel abandoned right now thanks to Bush's bailout. Many of them defected. You have small government libertarians who are also abandoned. You have national security republicans.
All of them are important, and how did Reagan get all of them, as well as many democrats? Much of that was through a 10th amendment type of platform leaving many of the more controversial issues to the states. Maine could be Maine, Michigan could be Michigan, and Texas could be Texas.
Do not give Frum’s RINO website a hit.
Worked for Reagan. Not.
Frum is a dunce.
The story of Bristol Palin should help puncture this illusion.
I don't know how his first thought connects to his second.
Part of the problem is that conventional wisdom of the dominant liberal theme is wrong. That is, liberals feel that since people won't live up to standards they set, those standards are disposable.
That's patently wrong - the fact that people fail to meet standards doesn't mean that the standard is disposable. Frum seems to sign on to this mentality without much thinking.
The standard suggests that getting pregnant as a high schooler is a bad idea, and handicaps the course of the person's life. Bristol's example is immaterial - the principle is true and valid. Frum is mixed up.
Uh,let me guess:
Because of the bad example Bristol sets?
Hmmmm?
There is a great deal of truth to this, no matter how unpalatable it is for Frum to tie it to the case of Sarah Palin’s daughter. With the stigma of illegitimacy gone, marriage is no longer considered necessary or even desirable for large numbers of young people, especially those who have no great aspirations in life. This has been true for lower-class blacks since the sixties, and now it is true of whites as well. The consequences for our society are enormous and truly awful.
