Wow - more dangerous than other times, because of massive ice flows, etc...

Water temp is just above 32 Deg. F

Lucky fellow.. unless he wanted to end it all.. now the celebrity of the moment may end up doing him in..

After jumping into river, man survives plunge over Horseshoe Falls

http://www.buffalonews.com/home/story/604520.html

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — A man who jumped into the upper rapids on the Canadian side of the Niagara River and then was swept over the Horseshoe Falls was rescued this afternoon after spending more than 40 minutes in frigid waters below the falls.

The man, who suffered a head injury and signs of hypothermia, refused to help emergency responders with his rescue. He was saved when a firefighter using safety equipment swam out about 50 yards into the Niagara River, said officials from the Niagara Falls, Ont., police and fire departments.

The man, said to be in his 30s or 40s, refused to grab onto a pole extended to him from two rescuers aboard a helicopter. The helicopter pilot then positioned the aircraft in a way that used the winds to push the man closer to the shoreline.

The man was taken by Niagara EMS to Greater Niagara General Hospital, officials said.

I initially thought it was a woman hence we would have had a fallen woman on our hands. However, it turned out to be a man.

Did he “refuse” to grab the pole or was he incapable of reaching out and grabbing the pole. Forty minutes in that icy water and a head injury might have left him too stunned to do anything.

Why - was it the subject of an Obama press conference?

Apparently, one of the survivors of the Titanic did so because he had drank a lot of alcohol before the ship sank. There’s no mention of this guy had been drinking but it sure makes you wonder. (Particularly if he was enough of a knucklehead to jump in the water in the first place...)

The man was taken by Niagara EMS to Greater Niagara General Hospital, officials said.

And now the rest of the story....

He was put on the MRI waiting list and we should know the extent of his injuries before Christmas.
