Sarah Palin gives MP the brush-off
The First Post ^ | 3/10/09

Posted on 03/10/2009 6:53:36 AM PDT by redk

Sarah Palin, the Alaskan governor and one-time Republican vice-presidential candidate (pictured), has delivered a humiliating snub to Tory MP Edward Leigh. Like a number of other misguided souls, the former Tory minister appears to have developed something of a crush on Palin, or the ‘pitbull in lipstick’ as she dubbed herself. Such was his ardour that he took the extraordinary step of asking her to have dinner with him and some chums at the House of Commons.

The poor English bastards.

She hasn't really accepted any of the invitations she gotten so I don't think it was really a snub.

Perhaps not ... but after 0bama's incredibly boorish behaviour, the Brits are in a (somewhat justifiable) snit, and may see everything in its worst possible light. So Sarah got caught up in the overkill ... IT'S 0BAMA'S FAULT!

If someone has a crush on you and you’re married to someone else, turning down any invitation to dinner, drinks, baseball game is the proper thing to do.

This Tory MP should act more professional.

Where was the snub?

“Thank you for your very kind letter inviting me to dinner at the House of Commons,” wrote Palin, or more likely some lowly assistant. “While it is not possible at the time to take advantage of your kind invitation to dine with Cornerstine Group of Conservative MPs, thank you for the invitation.”

But it got worse. Palin added: “I have asked our Office of International Trade to be available to answer any questions you may have about Alaska. God Bless.” Ouch.

The Britts are clueless if they believe that was a snub.
God bless Sarah, a first class lady all the way.

So was she going to be there anyway? Were they expecting her to drop everything and fly 7000 miles to have dinner with them? I should think if she were in London she would be happy to have dinner with them.

And, don’t these people know she’s married? Is Todd invited?

So let me get this straight. Putting aside the fact that SP is married...

Some politician in a foreign country asks the governor of a U.S. State to drop what she’s doing, fly half way around the world to his country, and have dinner?

And he’s “snubbed” when she politely turns him down?

I live in Britain and I have no idea who that is.

Anyway, I don’t think this was a snub, nor do I think “the British” are treating it as such. For one thing: very few of us speak or write in unison.

I do applaud the good sense of the Tories in inviting her - a point this thread seems to have missed. Would FReepers rather the Tories invited Nancy Pelosi?

From reading the article, the invitation would seem to have at least a semblance of professional cover.

Nevertheless, it's more that a bit silly. Normally, I think even the high-strung Brit press would be more inclined to ridicule the MP than to beat on the Governor. Note the reference to "misguided souls" ... That the article is, even slightly, critical of the Governor is (IMHO) overreaction consequent to Zero's recent ineptitude.

This is a pathetic attempt to make a headline with the words Sarah Palin in it.

Here is a better gossip item from the same website:

ANGER AT HONORARY KNIGHTHOOD FOR BROWN’S OLD FRIEND TED KENNEDY

Although the honorary knighthood awarded to Senator Edward Kennedy ... was formally recommended by the British Embassy in Washington, it is almost certain that Gordon Brown played a personal role in the decision. Kennedy is one of Brown’s oldest political friends in America - a reminder that the PM is a long-time Americanophile who, until he felt he had to do the populist thing on becoming PM and take bucket-and-spade holidays in Britain, used to spend his summers on Cape Cod.

&&&

The article is about anger in the UK, not in the USA. Nice to know we agree on something with our cousins, the Brits.

What? As we learned when her international experience included negotiating with Canada the largest public works project in North America:

"Oh but Canada isn't really a different country, .....it doesn't really count."

Which means the snub, if it was a snub, doesn't count, either.

Libs cannot stomach a successful, intelligent, pretty, conservative, feminine woman.

Maybe it was the return of the Winston Churchill statue.
Maybe it was the region 1 DVD collection that can’t be viewed in Region 2 of England along with the cheesy plastic helicopers given as gifts.

Or maybe they are just seeing what the majority of Americans don’t. We are being run by a frat party.

You’re absolutely correct. This way, if someone mentioned Obama’s rude behavior, they can point to this and say, “Sarah Palin did it too.” Of course, it is not nearly the same thing. The Prime Minister came and visited Obama in the White House, and was treated badly. The President’s job includes meeting with foreign leaders.

Governor Palin’s job description does not include flying halfway around the world to have dinners with foreign politicians. Although, I imagine if this MP traveled to Alaska, there would be a slightly larger chance she may have met with him. Perhaps not, as she get thousands of requests for her time and cannot possibly meet all these people and still give her job as Governor the proper attention.

I don’t blame Mr. Leigh for asking. She is quite an inspiration. Who knows if he really has a crush on her, as he is not quoted saying so, and the media is not always to be believed. No one should be offended though, as she declined politely, and really doesn’t have the time to fly overseas, nor is it in her job description.

...media...bias is now becoming the story. Last night every story on embryonic stem cell research was really a story on Bush and “the last 8 years.”

There should have been outrage about unnecessary Federal spending during a financial crisis. Last night the local Baltimore station showcased a guy in a wheelchair with Parkinson's and cancer who was relishing the idea of killing some embryos to cure him. All that was missing from the camera angles was a case of beer and a carton of cigarettes.

In the parlance of international relations, that is indeed a snub. The graceless writing makes it more so. The absolute capstone on the thing is the insulting reference to commerce, and referring “questions” to a trade office. If she had tried, she could not have given greater offense. Or offence, as the British have it. This is the way things are done at that level.

The question is whether she intended the snub or not, and if so, what reason she had. If so, it was probably a sound one.
