911 tape: Octuplet mom frantic in search for son
Associated Press ^ | March 4, 2009

WHITTIER, Calif. (AP) - Octuplet mother Nadya Suleman became unhinged with fear last year when she thought she had lost one of her children, repeatedly telling an emergency dispatcher, "Oh God, I'm going to kill myself," according to a recording of her 911 call released Wednesday by police.

Suleman made the call Oct. 27 after her 5-year-old son went missing from the front yard, only to find him a few minutes later after he returned from a walk.

Suleman's repeated threats of suicide prompted a chiding from the dispatcher, who could hear children's voices in the background.

"Don't say that in front of your other child, OK?" the dispatcher tells Suleman. "Keep yourself under control for your other child; he doesn't need to hear that."

I guess the Ass. Press isn’t interested in covering their boy’s economic disaster.

Her father was on Oprah a week ago and when asked about his daughter’s mental state, he said he thought she had a problem and asked Oprah if she could help and Oprah was quite taken off guard but graciously said she would if the daughter was willing to be evaluated.

Interesting to say the least and completely tragic for the children to have such an unbalanced mom.

“The children.” Exactly. Which is why this is very problematic. Normal and stable mothers don’t tell people they are going to “kill” themselves while the children are within hearing distance; and any parent can tell you how great kids’ hearing is unless you are telling them to do chores.

Uh, I’m not judging HER, just her behavior, and it is very disturbing. When a dispatcher has to remind the lady that their are kids within earshot, something is wrong.

Also, maybe this is why the LADY shouldn’t be having 14 kids - heck she can’t even keep track of the 6 she’s watching already obviously.

I am sure that most people who are critical of this lady also are thinking of the children, as they are the innocent victims. Her own father is concerned for their welfare and it is quite obvious he has doubts about her mental stability. It’s scary.

There are a lot of things that this woman deserves criticism for, but totally panicking when her 5 year old goes missing for a few minutes isn’t one of them. That’s what normal parents do when a young child goes missing.

Exactly what I was thinking. Mothers are supposed to panic when they lose track of a kid — for any length of time.

Yes, parents panic.
However, threatening suicide is not panic. It’s absorbed self interest.
Especially in front of her other children.

Child protective services should be looking into this.

Oprah was taken off guard. That's hilarious.

It's quite all right for Doprah to profit off this lunatic octomom and family with higher ratings but if they ask her for money or help she's 'taken off guard'.

Have you ever lost a child?
Most moms have. Even if it’s just for a minute or two when the kid goes in a different direction.

Did you ever scream about suicide? Most likely not. Your thoughts were totally on your child, not yourself. This is not normal behavior.

In some ways I can agree with this, but in her case....

She is a total nutjob and is still looking for her 15 ++++ minutes

She is crazy and the Dr that helped out in this mess should loose his license.

There’s no reason to think she was seriously threatening suicide. Sounds more along the lines of “I just couldn’t live with myself if something happened to him because I lost track of him”. A panicking parent isn’t going to be do much thinking through their choice of words when calling 911 re a missing preschooler.

Agreed — the talk of suicide was over the top. Perhaps it was just her way of expressing her extreme distress — perhaps it indicates some deeper psychological problems — I can’t say.

I have had children go missing — and I did focus on the task of finding them; rather than simply panicking. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t fault anyone for letting panic get the better of them in such a situation.

Leave the woman alone.

We all disagree strongly with state run welfare and AFDC.

There are significant battles to be fought.

Let’s not be petty.

Any good parent responds with near panic when she feels her child may have been abducted.

If I walked outside and couldn’t find one of my kids, or if my wife did we may panic but I think threatening suicide would be the furthest thing from our lips.

Gotta be pretty crazy already to go there in a situation like that... and pretty self-absorbed. Reminds me of a crazy aunt I had. Every time somebody in the family was sick hurting or even dead she would cry and say, “Why do things like this always happen to ME!?!”

When she talked about suicide, it means to me that this is a frequent threat on her part. That's why it rolled off her tongue so easily.

She's screwed up, but we already know that.

The call ended with Suleman sobbing hysterically upon finding the child, saying, "He went on a walk and came back by himself."

Really? FOX News reported today that the child was on a walk with his grandmother.

Oh, I guarantee you she was taken off guard. She had no idea that guy was going to say that. He just spoke from his heart and you could tell he was sincere too. I felt bad for that man worrying about his grandchildren.

As for Oprah, I am NO fan and it was funny to watch her squirm for a few seconds when she realized she had been put on the spot in front of her millions of adoring fans.

Oy. I think you are being a little ridiculous - you are right; no perfect families but this woman purposefully had embryos placed inside her uterus - it wasn’t an accident - and she did it time after time after time, all while having NO husband, thus NO father for the children. Do you think children deserve to have a mother AND a father? I do. I know not all children have that scenario whether through death or other bad situations, but they all DESERVE it. This lady is selfish well beyond the normal selfishness of today’s youth - selfish and egotistical. It looks like she has had some cosmetic touches to her lips and so on as well - maybe she’s just a narcissist. I don’t know - I’m not a psychologist or a psychiatrist, but I don’t think it takes a medical person to detect serious pathology here. Even her mom and dad are worried.

I’m not arguing with anything you just said. The older kids should be sheltered IMO. They go to school and hear their ‘less than sane’ mom’s 911 call? I don’t agree with that. They did nothing wrong. Take the kids or leave them IMO. Don’t turn them all into quasi michael jacksonish spawn...

BTW. I consider this to be an explosive media event. It advances state’s rights over parents. Just like the Euro model. You don’t have to dig too far.

I don’t give a rat’s tush about this case other than two simple facts:

1. This lady is a kook and mentally unfit and the STATE might have a right in taking away her children, because children who are abused and raised by kooks become ALL of our problem down the road.
2. This lady is going to cost the people of California a ton of money over the lifetime of these children all because she was a selfish and irresponsible moron.

It’s a big media event for good reason. Most media circuses are for things that are so trivial and I do not think this situation is trivial on any level at all.

Frankly, what I think should happen is that THE State (of California, that is) should SUE that irresponsible and unethical “doctor” for the money they are going to have to outlay for the care of those children.

I don’t think this case advances states’ rights at all. It might, however, advance some common sense.
