Out With A Shiver: Global Warming Protest Frozen Out by Massive Snowfall
fox news ^ | 3/2/2009 | Joseph Abrams

Posted on 03/02/2009 4:59:52 PM PST by tobyhill

Global warming activists stormed Washington Monday for what was billed as the nation's largest act of civil disobedience to fight climate change -- only to see the nation's capital virtually shut down by a major winter storm.

Schools and businesses were shuttered, lawmakers cancelled numerous appearances and the city came to a virtual standstill as Washington was blasted with its heaviest snowfall of the winter.

It spelled about six inches of trouble for global warming activists who had hoped to swarm the Capitol by the thousands in an effort to force the government to close the Capitol Power Plant, which heats and cools a number of government buildings, including the Supreme Court and the Capitol.

The snowy scene, with temperatures in the mid-20s, was reminiscent of a day in January 2004, when Al Gore made a major address on global warming in New York -- on one of the coldest days in the city's history.

Protest organizers said about 2,500 people braved the blizzard to oppose greenhouse gas emissions, but the shroud of snow wasn't the only wet blanket in the nation's capital Monday.

The plant has been seized as a symbol of the government's energy excess, and the 99-year-old facility accounts for a third of the legislative branch's greenhouse gas emissions.

The other two thirds comes from within the legistlaive branch's facility.

The economy is in an impossible tailspin. The markets have spoken. 20% unemployment is around the corner.

Putting through a massive energy tax now would be suicide. All the while, the majority of the public suspects warming is due to natural causes and that taxes won’t fix things anyway.

As it is, we are likely headed for massive CO2 reductions anyway due to a collapse in economic output, just like the old Soviet Union.

The cold snap just brings home the absurdity for the whole country.

GW policy doesn’t have a snowball’s chance.

GORE HEARING ON WARMING MAY BE PUT ON ICE

Mon Jan 26 2009 17:59:26 ET

Al Gore is scheduled before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday morning to once again testify on the 'urgent need' to combat global warming.

But Mother Nature seems ready to freeze the proceedings.

A 'Winter Storm Watch' has been posted for the nation's capitol and there is a potential for significant snow... sleet... or ice accumulations.

"I can't imagine the Democrats would want to showcase Mr. Gore and his new findings on global warming as a winter storm rages outside," a Republican lawmaker emailed the DRUDGE REPORT. "And if the ice really piles up, it will not be safe to travel."

A spokesman for Sen. John Kerry, who chairs the committee, was not immediately available to comment on contingency plans.

Global warming advocates have suggested this year's wild winter spells are proof of climate change.

Personally, I think it is darn right funny that these sorts of events keep having weather problems. God does indeed have a sense of humor.

Now, with that being said, and I mean this with all seriousness. If these protesters feel so strongly about global warming and power consumption then I think that they should do more than stand up and protest for their beliefs. I believe they should also LIVE them. Be it voluntarily or not. Remove their homes from the power and water grids. Let them figure out how to keep warm in the dark. Let them figure out how to stay cool when the temperature and humidity is at killing temperatures.

Let them go to a well if they have one and pump their own water and then carry it back home for their usage. It isn’t as much fun to live like you are camping when it is your daily way of life.

We live the way we do because our ancestors, Grand-parents, parents wanted to live a more easy kind of life than their fore-bearers did.

rant/off

Can't do that in DC, because when it's real hot (Summer) the population used to swell the protest ranks - college students - are off on Summer break.

Holding the protest this week was as late they could go before the local colleges emptied out for Spring Break. When the students come back from Spring Break they're into their term papers and finals.

Ask anyone who lives/ed in Cuba, N Korea or the old Soviet Union/Eastern Europe how the elite live/ed compared to the great unwashed. This is where we are headed.

The Demo-Socialists don’t pay any attention to climate facts. They just spew out Goron speak. Problem is, they have millions thinking that man-made global warming is a real threat.

Just ask anyone this question: Are greenhouse gases bad? Almost everyone will say yes. But in fact, greenhouse gases are essential to keeping the earth warm enough for humans. Water vapor is a major greenhouse gas. CO2 is only present in the atmosphere in trace amounts, currently about 380 parts per million. Probably most Gorons think that CO2 is only produced by man’s evil capitalist industries. They are so ignorant of the facts, it’s almost laughable.

The earth has experienced many many cycles of warming and cooling over hundreds of thousands of years, primarily due to the sun’s activity (talk about CHANGE!) and the path of the earth orbiting the sun. What humans do on earth is of little consequence.

More than likely, we are about to enter a period of global cooling. Obama and the other socialists are clueless.

Yeah, I have to wonder that the two worst days of the year in DC were 1) the day Al Gore came to speak to Congress about Global warming, and 2) the day that activists were gonna shut down a power plant due to global warming.

The wackos will be claiming that Global Warming is causing more extreme weather but history disproves that theory.

Washington DC,
March 1772: The snowy winter continued with two more snowstorms in March as witnessed by an observer in Carrollton, MD (between Washington and Baltimore). Snow fell on March 11, 12, and 13 adding up to 17 inches on the ground. Additional snow on March 20th brought the snow depth on the ground up to 20 inches.

In a press release supporting the protest, Greenpeace wrote that "coal is the country's biggest source of global warming pollution" and that "burning coal cuts short at least 24,000 lives in the U.S. annually."

And they know this how?

On a blustery, frigid day, it might be worth noting the government's own stark numbers: pneumonia kills twice as many each year.

Justice would be them getting sick as dogs from staying out in the weather.

I really do have to wonder where most of these anti-global warming nutjobs live. It certainly can't be in northern states that have had it with the long cold winter.

I seriously don't know anyone who doesn't laugh at the concept of global warming and wouldn't actually like to see a little.
