Obama banks on pollution reductions
The Washington Times ^ | Thursday, February 26, 2009 | Tom LoBianco

President Barack Obama's first budget includes $15 billion a year for renewable energy programs and an ambitious plan to raise $646 billion from a carbon reduction proposal.

"Because our future depends on our ability to break free from oil that's controlled by foreign dictators, we need to make clean, renewable energy the profitable kind of energy," Mr. Obama said Thursday morning. "That's why we'll be working with Congress on legislation that places a market-based cap on carbon pollution and drives the production of more renewable energy."

The plan uses money from a cap-and-trade program — which would allow companies to emit carbon dioxide up to a certain level, and then charge them $20 per ton of gasses emitted above that cap — would pay for Mr. Obama's middle-class tax cuts and investments in renewable energy.

Republican leaders were broadly critical of the president's plans, saying the national economy is in no shape to handle the burden of new taxes.

an ambitious plan to raise $646 billion from a carbon reduction proposal

That makes it the same as a tax, paid by every person who uses electricity or any other energy.

It's not taxing the energy producers as they pass it along to the consumers.

He's trying to make it sound like it's new money coming from out of nowhere, but actually he is just re-taxing the same people....taking water from the deep end of the pool and putting it into the shallow end hoping to increase the depth at the shallow end.

Liberals never learn that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.....they never consider the consequences of what they do.

That's how California got in its mess and all the rest of us will end up chipping in

You can't keep taking money from producers/workers/innovators and giving it to non-productive/counterproductive people and expect anything good to result.

Profitable like ethanol is "profitable" because Fedzilla subsidizes its production.

Think America, he spends $15 billion on alternative energy.

And then taxes our existing energy a whopping $645 billion!!

Get the picture? Less energy. Higher prices. Leftist insanity.

nobama must think we’re all fools.

With cap and trade he will raise the price of energy we use now (coal, gasoline, diesel, etc.) to such a high price we’ll be begging to buy a plug-in car or put solar panels on our roof or a windmill in our backyard.

What a ridiculous non-starter of an idea.

Do all the energy intensive stuff on your life’s “to do” list ASAP. Once this POS kicks in, you’ll be lucky to get to work each day and the grocery once a week. And with your home thermostat set to 60, if not lower, in the winter, get used to huddling.

This is just total BS. Hard to believe our populace is falling for this.

Companies do not pay taxes. They pass the cost of taxes on to their customers. So Wal*Mart charges me an extra $20 for groceries because of cap and trade. And then nobama give me a "tax cut?" This is insane!

Not only is it a massive tax increase - what I find interesting is it is NOT a progressive tax increase - even poor folks pay this. So watch for the dems to find a way so not all pay for this but only achievers

They already have. Obama, the king himself, said they will be subsidizing the higher utility bills of the people who can’t afford the increased bills cap and trade will cause.

Obama’s cap and trade would result in factories closing or reducing operations, and much higher unemployment. More jobs would leave the U.S. permanently.

Even without such a stunningly dumb plan, unemployment will probably go to 12%.
