(CNN) -- Don Black said he despises Barack Obama. And he said he believes illegal aliens undermine the economic fabric of the United States.
Black, a 55-year-old former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard, isn't the only person who holds such firm beliefs, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which today released its annual hate group report.
The center's report, "The Year in Hate," found the number of hate groups grew by 54 percent since 2000. The study identified 926 hate groups -- defined as groups with beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people -- active in 2008. That's a 4 percent jump, adding 38 more than the year before.
What makes this year's report different is that hate groups have found two more things to be angry about -- the nation's first African-American president and an economy that is hemorrhaging jobs. For the past decade, Latino immigration has fueled the growth of hate groups.
"We fear these conditions will favor the growth of these groups in the future," said Mark Potok, director of the Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project. "In the long arch of history, we are definitely moving forward, but these kinds of events can produce backlashes."

I would love to know what constitutes a hate group? For example, if you oppose abortion, is that considered hate nowadays? If a group supports traditional marriage and opposes homosexual marriage, is that group considered a hate group?
I think we’re re-defining hate as pertaining to opposing a political agenda. Having a different political/social position on the issues of the day doesn’t mean that you hate the opposing position. That’s such child like thinking.

Yes, I fear hate groups will grow as well...and it’s because the government hasn’t done their job and because groups like SPLC are racist and YET the media depends on them to define the problem.
The SPLC is itself an anti-white hate group. It exists for the sole purpose of subjugating whites and flooding the country with non-whites until whites are a marginalized irrelevancy. It defines any opposition to this agenda as “hate”. The media play along willingly.

I had some admiration for it when it took that despicable piece of human garbage Tom Metzger and his White Aryan Resistance out for the murder of an Ethiopian cab driver in Portland years ago.
But to try and paint citizens who worry about the marxist direction of the country Obama is pied-pipering us in and the threat to the economy posed by massive illegal immigration is irresponsible beyond belief. And so is CNN for painting with such a wide stroke. They better be VERY careful - a lot of people that voted for Obama also are not pleased with the tide of illegal immigrants - and MANY of them are African-American. I remember when the illegals did their little illegal “parade” three years ago tying up Market Street in San Francisco. The comments voicing the most disgust over them were coming from Blacks on the sidewalk.

That’s how groups like SPLC get entrenched...they do one thing reasonable, form a charter, get all the tax $$ to run on, and then turn into the same lop sided lefties like all of them.

Of course, groups such as La Raza, MECHA, and assorted murderous black or Latino gangs don't get listed as hate groups.
This report lists the Nation of Islam as a Hate group labeling it “Black Separatist.” It is listed 113 times out of the 926 SPLC reports. Radical Traditionalist Catholics make up another 14 and Christian identity groups are another 39. The Jewish Defense League is also listed a number of times.
