Reid: Don't call it nationalization
Politico on Yahoo ^ | 2/23/09 | Lisa Lerer

Posted on 02/23/2009 9:48:31 AM PST by NormsRevenge

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he supports efforts of the federal government to dramatically expand its stake in Citigroup, but wants people to back off from the dramatic rhetoric.

“It’s not nationalization, it’s protecting the taxpayers’ interests,” Reid (D-Nev.) told MSNBC’s Morning Joe program on Monday.

“In the bailout, the TARP, that we made sure the American taxpayer had a way of getting paid back for their investments,” Reid said. “That’s what this is all about and it’s the right way to go.”

The federal government is in talks to take as much as a 40 percent stake in the struggling bank’s common stock, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.

Republicans have criticized Democrats for moving closer to bank nationalization – something White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs signaled that the administration signaled would oppose on Friday.

“My main concern is that Washington is sending mixed signals to Wall Street, which is causing private capital to remain on the sideline," said Rep. Scott Garrett (R-N.J.), a member of the House Financial Services Committee. "Until investors are clear about the government’s intention with regard to future market interference, confidence will not be restored to the financial sector.”

The idea, reported the Journal, was originally proposed to the government by Citigroup. On Sunday, Treasury spokesman Issac Baker indicated to Politico that the administration would seriously consider the proposal.

...

The U.S. government infused $45 billion into Citigroup last fall.

And when a burglar breaks into my home and steals my belongings, it’s not theft, it’s redistributing the wealth.

What bizarre leftist thinking.

“Until investors are clear about the government’s intention with regard to future market interference, confidence will not be restored to the financial sector.”

A democratically controlled Congre$$ and WH are pushing this country and its future to the brink of disaster. (Is that too strong a statement?)

It is the gubamint’s meddling by folks of a certain political persuasion that got us in this mess... a fact lost to the mainstream mumbling media, for some odd reason.

The "Fairness" Doctrine is where the Leftists get to shutdown the conservative media outlets precisely because so many citizens enjoy the conservative media outlets.

It's all in the naming. How could anyone be against the Fairness Doctrine??

I support calling the Democrats economic plan "nationalization" because I think it is very accurate. But if they insist on a name change, I will gladly consider "fascist economics" as an alternative.

I wonder what the 3 moderate stooges call it?

No, it is not just nationalization, it is a blend of nationalization and socialism- nationalization/socialism, and it is an act for the working class so it is nationalism/socialism workers act.

I don’t know if I am wrong or not; but corporations like Citibank; weren’t they run by Clinton people? Were they pre-selected to fail as a way the government to own private business?

Just a thought.

"“It’s not nationalization, it’s protecting the taxpayers’ interests,” Reid (D-Nev.) told MSNBC’s Morning Joe program on Monday. "

How does raising taxes and throwing every American citizen deeper into debt 'protect taxpayer's interests'? Just as Hollywoood's narcissists are enamored of their own looks and talents and view themselves as great artists and "beautiful people", politicians view themselves as gods, all-powerful saviors who know better than the people what is good for them. These peoples' egos are so enormous they blot out humility and reality. May the real God save us all from bloated egoists like Harry Reid.

Has Mexico ever paid back the money that it borrowed from Citibank. I remember years ago that Mexico owed Citibank millions it not a few billion of dollars. I could be wrong, but I don’t think I am. Maybe some of you may be more up to date on this than I am.
