Sanford fires back [responds to attacks from Gov. O'Malley, D-Md.]
MSNBC ^ | 2009-02-02 | Domenico Montanaro

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford struck a feisty tone Saturday night, responding directly to Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley’s call earlier in the day for “fringe” Republican governors opposed to stimulus funds to "step aside."

"I don't see folks [here], who are really wired to step aside," Sanford said to applause from the GOP crowd in "The Crystal Room," an ornate dining room, complete with cascading chandeliers and 15-foot high green marble columns, at the upscale Willard Intercontinental Hotel in downtown Washington, two blocks from the White House.

At the Republican Governors Association dinner -- in part, a thank you to Republican fundraisers during this weekend when governors from around the country are in the nation's capital for the National Governors Association meeting -- Sanford lauded the efforts specifically of Bobby Jindal, Haley Barbour, Rick Perry and Sonny Perdue, Southern governors who have said they’re opposed to stimulus funds and may not take money for their states.

Sanford called Republican governors the "last ones standing," when it comes to setting conservative policy.

He thanked House Minority Leader John Boehner, who was in attendance, for keeping House Republicans firmly in opposition to the stimulus.

He had some tough words, however, for the Upper Chamber.

"What we're doing should have been done by Congress and the U.S. Senate," Sanford continued. Three Republican senators crossed the aisle to give the Democrats a filibuster-proof coalition to pass President Obama's recovery bill.

Sanford went so far to say that, "This is a gut check vote, a gut check deliberation ... for the future of our civilization.”

I'm sure that this same writer would point out these same surroundings if the Dems were there instead. /s

"I think in this instance I would humbly suggest that the real fringe are those that are supporting the stimulus. It is not at all in keeping with the principles that made this country great, not at all in keeping with economic reality, not in keeping with a stable dollar, and not in keeping with the sentiments of most of this country."
—Gov. Mark Sanford, R-South Carolina, in response to attacks from Gov. Martin O'Malley, D-Maryland

The last thing any of these states need is more unfunded mandates. The idiotic 'stimulus' bag-o-crap is infested with them.

Sanford is protecting his state from being forced to incur massive debt from these worthless laws. I expect the legislators of the state to follow his lead.

Excellent from Sanford. Notice how the pukes at MSNBC go in details describing the luxury room where Sanford and the Republicans we meeting implying that they live in luxury during an economic crisis and do not care about regular people. Of course the pukes in the media did not mention a word about the super luxury place where Obama and the democrat had their retreat last month or the super luxury place where Obama spent his Christmas vacation.

Swapping NY's Patterson for Sanford would be a joy ... not to mention the weather.

Notice the comments, all the railing against Southerners. These idiots think that they, rather than their great-grandfathers fought and won the civil war. But I seee a democgraphic collapse hiting the Civil War north. Everyone is running away from the high cost of liberalism and the ones staying behind are having no kids.

Question: Could these Republican Governors accept the stimulus ... and then use it to provide tax cuts to their citizens?

THAT would make Dem heads explode, imho.

"What we're doing should have been done by ... the U.S. Senate," Sanford continued.

If it weren't for the Frakin' XVII Amendment, Sanford and his fellow Governors would have a H&LL of a lot more say about what happens in Washington.

As a relative newcomer to the world of Murland politics I am still amazed that the voters of this state could reject Bobby the RINO in favor of O’Malley, considering his comedic failure as Mayor of Baltimore. It is simply amazing. These simply have to be people who enjoy wearing sackcloth.

O’Malley has bankrupted Maryland in his first term, now he will get Stimulus checks out to Prince George’s County and Baltimore, buying himself another term .

As the National Republican Party ignores our needs for funds to get rid of these loads.

I’ve pretty much given up on the National Republican Party.

Until they take the bull by the horns and put in Conservative leadership (and enforce it), I cannot conclude they are serious. Hint: Michael Steele is not it.

Working at the local level for change *I* can believe in.

Owe’Malley has indeed bankrupted this State. And as for the National Republican Party - I felt they could have done a whole lot more to help Michael Steele. This stimulus money will just go to bail out not only Prince George’s County and Baltimore City, but all the crap that Montgomery County has brought on itself with sanctuary for illegals.

As a relative newcomer to the world of Murland politics I am still amazed that the voters of this state could reject Bobby the RINO in favor of O’Malley, considering his comedic failure as Mayor of Baltimore.

As a MD old timer (now parted from such) Maryland has changed immensely from years ago. One irrepressible fact is the vast number of government employees, metro DC. Indeed it is amazing that Ehrlich won at all, except that it was against a female outsider (Kennedy).

I really did think Steele had a chance for Senator, and still question legit vote counting against Cardin, a genuine political hack.

The eastern shore and western MD would be reliably conservative with a legitimate straight talking contender, but the numbers will never be enough to counter DC metro, and Baltimore City.

As I've said here before, with a savvy enough public strategy, Barbara Mikulski could actually be backed regularly into an economically conservative corner (not R of course, and not socially conservative - she's a dyke). But she can be shown up to her blue collar constituency. Cardin of course is just an irretrievable bigot.

I just don't think the Republican Party, certainly in MD, has enough smarts, or guts, to apply their supposed principles.

Knowing Baltimore though, I doubt anyone, anywhere, evermore, will be more than comedic mayoral entertainment.

Comedic would be a compliment to O'Malley. I think epic would be a better description of his failure status in B-more.
