New Pain at Pump: Gas Tax Hikes
ABC News ^ | Feb. 21, 2009 | DAVID MUIR and JENNA MUCHA

The United States is in a recession with millions of Americans struggling with being out of work, and now a dozen states across the country are proposing tax increases. They are considering an idea to raise the gas tax.

One governor interested in this idea is Deval Patrick of Massachusetts, who wants to raise the state's gas tax by 19 cents, bringing it from 23 cents a gallon to nearly 43 cents a gallon. It would become the highest gas tax in the nation.

Patrick isn't the only governor considering it. Lawmakers in New Hampshire, Illinois, Oregon and Ohio are all looking to raise the gas tax, too.

Patrick said the cost to consumers will be the equivalent of one large cup of coffee a week. But no matter what it is, drivers are not happy.

Only one-third of fees collected by state and local government from motorists go directly to road construction and maintenance.

Motorists gave state and local government $40.3 billion in 2005 for the ability to drive and own a vehicle.

After accounting for administration and overhead, $28.5 billion remained for all fifty states to spend in 2005.

Of this amount, only $13 billion was spent on state and local road construction and maintenance.

This dumb sh*t should go a long ways towards helping end the "worse financial crisis since The Great Depression."

Politicians are the dumbest people I know. Of course, dumb people need jobs too.

It’s not the oil companies who are making obscene profits from gas sales...

Increasing taxes as we head into a recession(more likely a depression). What further proof does one need to support the thesis that the leadership class is stupid, incompetent and corrupt(corrupt as the increase in taxes is for the prupose of wealth transfer.)

Folks on a thread back were wondering what sort of modern equivalent could be used to stage a “tea party”...there ya go. Imagine a group of folks dressed up in Soros masks and arab shieik costumes, Putin masks, any Democrat politician mask, grabbing a tanker of wholesale gas(before state tax applied) and dumping it into a harbor...(screw the enviromentalists, the gas will break up eventually).

The Federal Tax of 18.4 cents per gallon is collected in all states in addition to any state or local taxes on gasoline sales.

If its only the cost of one large coffee per week, then I propose eliminating free coffee in every state and local building with no tax increase. Problem solved.

Liberals have always wanted gas taxes to go up. They want to invest such taxes in clean green energy, so they say.

I think liberals like high gas taxes for various reasons. One of them is to punish people whose cars use more gas, such as SUVs, big trucks and Hummers. In the self-righteous mind of the liberals, people with such vehicles should pay more, just because. ‘

And in the mind of the liberal, big oil company profits are immoral. The liberal has no sexual or societal morality, only invoking morality as it applies to the business world or other perceived evil. Certain business practices or profits are deemed to be immoral. A business should do no more than break even in the liberal mindset, otherwise, they have ripped off their customers.

Liberals see all of the problems of society and blame them on excesses of capitalism. People are poor because there aren’t any jobs, or jobs that pay well enough. They complain about lower paying jobs being created, and say you can’t support a family on such income. They look at industrial pollution and want these companies taxed to pay for clean up. They think any company has unlimited deep pockets to pay any taxes or fees or any cost that we want to levy on business. And when businesses close down and take their good paying jobs away, they complain about that, as if companies exist just to provide them with jobs and fringe benefits.

I think too many liberals don’t know how capitalism works. Maybe that’s why so many are socialist and want the government to run everything.

When the economy is good, liberals want to raise your taxes. When the economy is bad, liberals want to raise your taxes.
And when the economy is terrible, liberals want to nationalize businesses. What you see is what you get.

I thought the ‘stimulus’ bill was supposed to take care of all our problems!

When will this crap end?! They are going to bankrupt this country in one fell swoop before the buffoon Obama is in office for less than two months!

The ignorant goons on the left are sure feeling their oats aren't they?

Add to these state tax increases, new Federal carbon taxes, the pass through of windfall profits taxes on oil companies and the higher prices caused by gasoline shortages as a result of no new oil drilling and refinery shutdowns due to new environmental restraints and presto $5 per gallon gasoline that we have to stand in long lines to get.

Patrick said the cost to consumers will be the equivalent of one large cup of coffee a week.

But the problem, you liberal turd, is that I'm up to about 110 large cups of coffee a week, already.

The caffeine is killing me!

I don't drink coffee. What's the equivalent in, say, flight lessons for terrorists? Thanks geo.
