WASHINGTON (AP) - Investigators in the 2001 slaying of Chandra Levy have prepared an arrest warrant for a Salvadorian immigrant convicted of similar attacks in the park where the former intern disappeared, a person close to the investigation said Saturday.

The person told The Associated Press that Ingmar Guandique's arrest is imminent and an official announcement is expected soon. The source was not authorized to discuss the case publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

It’s actually some illegal immigrant from El Salvador. They’ve apparently got him pretty solid on 2 other attacks in Rock Creek Park.

We really have gone back to Sep 10, 2001, haven’t we??

(Look up the FNC video for the morning of 9/11, and see what the F&F crew were babbling about when the first plane crash report came in....)

Condit, Gary Condit. Too bad it’s not his name on the arrest warrant. Even if he didn’t actually kill her, he’s creepy enough to deserve to be arrested for something.

I remember seeing an ad in the Sunday paper during that time where they were advertising a 3-pack of “Condits” for 99 cents and they showed a box of condoms. When called on it, they said it was an intentional misprint and they didn’t apologize.

Condit is a known liar, cheater, deceiver and hypocrite. Some of us protested outside his Modesto district office every Saturday for over a year. We were helpful in getting his sorry rearend booted out of office. Since then he has been making a living by selling icecream and suing people.

Therefore, I am still suspicious of Gary “Condidit” Condit.

Condit was involved with some kind of biker crowd... it sounded like drugs to me...

I haven’t been in Modesto or the surrounding area for a few years, but I know the methamphetamine situation probably hasn’t changed much.

They've apparently got him pretty solid on 2 other attacks in Rock Creek Park.

I would be quite confident that this suspect did the other attacks in Rock Creek Park alone, but that does not imply that he also killed and buried Chandra Levy acting alone.

The theory being advanced by the police seems to be that Chandra's murder was a solo act of random urban violence, that the victim did not know her killer. But that doesn't seem all that consistent with an M. O. of the body being buried. A perp with Guandique's profile acting alone would most likely take the victim's money and valuables and leave the scene quickly, rather than carry the body and bury it. Would a guy like Guandique ordinarily carry around equipment - at a minimum a large shovel - to dig the grave? If he brought his "gardening tools" specifically for the digging, the homicide would seem to have been pre-meditated and not random.

Don't be surprised if Guandique is being used as a convenient "fall guy" for the crime, in order to exonerate Condit. After all, it's not very likely that Condit could possibly be linked to him. That might be why both Condit and his lawyer - after years of silence - just came out with statements expressing satisfaction at the news of the impending arrest.

Haven't heard that at all. Furthermore, Condit can easily deny it by stating he never met nor spoke to him. For all his odd behavior, I have heard nothing about Condit having social contacts with DC street druggies.

“I have heard nothing about Condit having social contacts with DC street druggies.”

Condit’s brother the ex-con may have had the social contacts with the DC street druggies and thugs. Maybe he was “helping” his brother out by arranging for Chandra Levy to “disappear”. Just a theory.

Yes, we know about Condit’s brother. He was on the front page of a lot of papers, as I recall, when the story first broke. Your theory isn’t new. But I don’t know anything about Condit’s brother hanging out in DC or speaking Spanish. Of course, he could have arranged it with Guandique via an intermediary. I wouldn’t rule it out, but I’d think other possibilities are more likely.

Bingo!

IMHO, this is a very important factor.

I don't trust the DC Police to follow up on the jailhouse story to another inmate by the perp that the killer was paid by Condit to kill Levy, and that the $ 25 Gs payment was sent to the killer's family in El Salvador. That amount of money would make quite a nice impact on someone's standard of living in that country.

OMG it was in the story but they made it disappear

The Washington Post has published a story that claims that former Congressman Gary Condit paid a Salvadorean $25,000 to have Chandra Levy, a White House intern, killed.

The Post says that they recently interviewed a prison informant who claims that Ingmar Guandique of El Salvador confessed to him in prison that he killed Chandra Levy at Rock Creek Park in Washington D.C.

The prison informant had previously told the following information to the police according to The Post:

"The informant said that he had befriended Ingmar Guandique during strolls around the jail's exercise yard. Guandique was awaiting trial on charges in the attacks in the park on May 14 and July 1. The informant said that one day in August Guandique looked depressed and said something was weighing on him.

Guandique, the informant said, confessed to murdering a woman in the park named Chandra Levy, the intern whose picture had been splashed all over television. There was more: Guandique said Rep. Gary Condit paid him to do it. He didn't realize who Condit was until he later saw his picture on TV. Guandique had been walking in the Adams Morgan neighborhood when a car pulled to the curb. Condit offered him money - $25,000 to kill a woman. The congressman provided him with her picture and a location where he could find her.

The informant said Guandique told him he took drugs and drank alcohol to steel himself for the attack. He went to the location Condit gave him and saw Chandra running on a path. Guandique hid in the bushes. When Chandra circled back, he jumped out and attacked her, stabbing her in the neck and the stomach. She fell to the ground, and Guandique carried her body far into the woods. He dug a hole with his hands and covered Chandra with dirt, leaves and sticks. He left the knife in her body and later considered retrieving it but never did. He sent the $25,000 to his family in El Salvador".

This is an old story from the WaPo, I believe, from seven or more years ago. If law enforcement knew about this story then and didn't think it sufficiently credible to make arrests in the case, what evidence has come up in the interim to make them change their minds? Clearly, if they believed the story, Condit would have or should have been arrested and charged as well.

One part of the story that hardly makes sense is the digging a "hole" with his hands. Even though the victim was kind of small, I don't think that any perp could dig a sufficiently large grave for an adult human with hands alone. A large shovel would have been a minimal requirement.
