Frozen in time... the watch which shows the moment newlywed Titanic passengers fell into sea and died

By Richard Smith 21/02/2009

THIS [see PIC in URL] is the pocket watch which shows the moment a couple of newlywed Titanic passengers fell into the sea and died together.

John Chapman, 37, was on honeymoon with new bride Lizzie, 29, when the liner struck an iceberg on April 15, 1912 and sank 35 minutes after they were pitched into the freezing Atlantic water.

Lizzie died after refusing a place on a lifeboat because her beloved husband was not allowed to go with her. S

he turned to her friend Emily Richards and said: “Goodbye Mrs Richards, if John can’t go, I won’t go either.”

The couple were travelling to Wisconsin to start a new life, when 1,517 people perished on the liner’s maiden voyage.

John’s traditional timepiece, now a treasured family heirloom, was recovered with his body and is being displayed for the first time at a Titanic ex

hibition at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth, Cornwall. Lizzie’s body was never found. Their story was later used as the inspiration for two newly-wed characters in the 1958 Titanic film ‘A Night To Remember’.

Humm...for being emersed in sea watter it's a remarkably :”clean” watch. I would think at least the face would be more discolored.

The article gives the impression that John Chapman’s body was one of the ones found floating amongst the flotsam in the days after the sinking. Not recovered from the ocean floor umpteen decades later.

Not recovered from the ocean floor umpteen decades later.

No bodies have ever been recovered from the ocean floor. He was one of the bodies pulled out of the water in the aftermath of the sinking.

I agree...and waterproof?? The temperature would have played some games with the various metals.

The "Moment" they fell into the sea?? Since it doesn't have the "day", no one will ever know that for sure unless recovered prior to 24 hours passing.

You guys are SO skeptical! It’s in the newspaper, for heaven’s sake; they wouldn’t lie to us or tell us a story they hadn’t checked out. Don’t be silly!
