SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Likely GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman promised to create 2 million private-sector jobs in California within the first five years if she is elected as she delivered what amounted to a political-coming out address Tuesday.

The former eBay chief executive told a group of her supporters that she would use her business experience to find ways to reform state regulations, cut taxes and realign government spending with what she believes should be the state's priorities, such as education. She offered few details.

"California is out of time. The next governor has to replace the state's bloated and chaotic government with a coordinated and streamlined government," she told about 100 invited guests at the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose.

The 52-year-old announced last week that she was forming an exploratory committee to seek the Republican nomination for governor in 2010, but she sounded more like an official candidate on Tuesday. The address was the first of three so-called "vision speeches" she is planning this week in her first bid for public office.

If anyone can accurately predict the economic outcome for the next five years, they have to be the smartest people in the world. People like Buffet and others don’t count, since their participation actually affects the market.

The potential for us to be in very dire circumstances within the next two years is very high.

Obama’s stimulus really doesn’t spend the money right now. So he plans to do a scaled back stimulus and rely upon lower taxes to help us recover. This would be my preference, but the taxes need to be lowered on business dramatically.

I think they know Tax cuts work, they just can’t emphasis it or it throws off their party line. We are at the point where it could go either way. It is a crap shoot.

This lady is crazy if she thinks she can guarantee anything for the future.

She offered few details.

It sounds like she has adopted Arnie's 2003 talking points.

"They tax too much... they spend too much... waste... reform... new jobs... yada yada yada." And clueless on how to accomplish it.

If she starts touting the "California Dream," I'm gonna gag.

I’m not as skeptical as you about the politicians, however, Arnold S. talked about a lot of the same things when he ran for governor, about private sector jobs, reforming bloated bureaucracy, etc. He has had his problems, not sure she can do better.

She has some strong views about LIFE. I’d give her my vote, if I lived in Fresno.

California will need at least 2 million new jobs to keep the unemployment rate level with the expected influx of illegals we can expect with immigration “reform”.

Well, Whitman is a CEO so the way this works is she creates two million jobs in California and then outsources them to India...

Whitman said, for instance, that she favors allowing same-sex couples to adopt children. She supports abortion rights and embryonic stem-cell research

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/02/12/BACU15SUDJ.DTL

Whitman said she supports abortion rights - including public funding for abortions - and believes tough gun laws like assault weapon bans and handgun control are appropriate for California.

Asked if she would favor cutting benefits such as welfare or health care to illegal immigrants, Whitman said that although border enforcement is important she would not support such cuts, because “whether they’re legal or illegal (immigrants), those benefits go to children ... and we have to protect the children.”

...

— Abortion rights: “I am pro-choice, and while I would like ... to bring down the number of abortions in America, I don’t think we can take choice away from women and their partners and doctors.” Whitman says she supports government funding for abortions, saying, “As long as abortion is legal, it has to be made available to women of all means.”

EBay’s Meg Whitman: “I’m a HUGE Proponent of Alternative Energy”

Meg Whitman, the former CEO of EBay, said she strongly believes that focusing innovation on alternative energy is the key to America’s global financial future.

“I’m a HUGE proponent of alternative energy,” Whitman told an audience of 6,000 women and Texas Governor Rick Perry during her keynote address at the Texas Conference for Women Thursday in Houston.

Whitman said developing solar energy, windpower, and biofuels technologies will create jobs in the U.S. and bolster American exports to China, Japan and other countries.

“We need to keep innovation alive,” she said. Whitman made clear that focusing on alternative energy should be a cornerstone of America’s economic revitalization.
