Strings attached? Jindal, legislature to decide if state will accept stimulus

BATON ROUGE, La. – You would think with Louisiana staring at a possible $2 billion budget shortfall next year, Governor Bobby Jindal would anxious to get a hold of the state's nearly $4 billion cut of the federal stimulus package.

But, instead, the republican governor appears to be a bit weary of democrats bearing gifts -- especially when he's set to give the GOP response to President Barack Obama's first State of the Union address.

The miserable editing of MSM stories continues: wouldn't he be wary of such gifts? I mean, he hasn't received so many as to wear him out!

Republican Governors should simply take the money, because their constituents paid taxes (and will continue to pay taxes) to provide it, and then simply refuse to follow ANY of Obama’s stipulations. That’s where I want to see them stand up, right then. Show us something Jindal, and you’ll get our support in 2012.

Not sure, but I’m wearily wary myself.

There is nothing hypocritical about a Gov. taking the money. You could tell your grandfather to NOT leave you 200,000.00 in his will, but if he does anyway...why should you turn it down?

I am against big government, but if somehow I became eligible for a large payment, I would take it and use it to work against that very thing in the future and to better secure my family’s future. The money is now going to be poured into the money supply/economy whether we like it or not. As much of it winding up in conservative hands as possible is making lemonade out of lemons. The money is going to flow through....conservatives need to get more proactive about changing the future and use these kinds of things as fuel. Literally and figuratively.

I agree. I think he should take it and turn around and use it for an across-the-board state income tax rate reduction. THEN we'd see. Do we get a one-state recovery? Do the state coffers get that and more back due to growth and prosperity? It would be a thing of beauty!

Me too.

Take the money, give it back to the citizens. If every red state did that and recovered, it would be close to Rush Limbaugh’s recovery plan and would work.

Of course, my state is so blue it looks like we quit breathing so we’re still toast.

He is right to be wary. Look at what happened to the solvent banks that were asked (read: forced) to take TARP money even though they didn’t need it - their CEO’s and top execs are also stuck with salary caps.

FUnny the article says they were given $538m for infrastructure that would create 50000 jobs. That is only $10,700 worth of pay for 50000 people. That doesn’t include a dime for material costs which would be at least 20% of the job.
I wonder where they come up with their figures.

JS that’s a great idea! I like that Jindal is even considering not taking the money and raising awareness of the “strings” attached to the state “aid.” If he did take the money, the “strings” in the package would require use for infrastructure, possibly using union workers, etc. But that would free up at least some money in the existing budget to be cut and given back to the taxpayers in the form of tax cuts.

Also, I read that Jindal will give the response to the State of the Union address. His star keeps rising, and I like that - a true conservative!
