Women Less Tolerant of Each Other Than Men Are, Study Finds
The Telegraph ^ | 13 Feb 2009

Posted on 02/15/2009 3:20:56 PM PST by nickcarraway

Women are less tolerant of each other than men are, according to a new study which may explain why some women prefer to have a male boss.

The research, published in the US journal Psychological Science, found that women formed a negative view of their peers much quicker than men did.

The team from Emmanuel College in Boston asked male and female college students to rate their room-mates under different scenarios.

When asked to judge how they would rate their room-mates if they carried out a single fictional act of negative behaviour, after they had been otherwise completely trustworthy, women were far more likely to be critical of them.

Men, on the other hand, were much more tolerant.

Women were also more likely to switch to a new room-mate than men were.

The authors, led by associate professor of psychology Joyce Benenson, concluded that women were harsher on their peers because they expected more from their same-sex relationships than men did.

They wrote: "Women may simply weight negative information more heavily than men do, because negative information disrupts the establishment of intimacy, which serves a more important function in same-sex relationships for women than for men."

While the study did not take place in the workplace itself, it would appear to back up previous surveys that have found women prefer to work for a male boss.

Tell me something I didn’t know. I’d rather supervise a thousand men than 10 women. (I have supervised women, I know of what I speak).

This is not a surprise. The people who seem to speak worst of women are......other women. Usually, however, its when they are (alone) one on one with a man. This applies to women talking about other (individual) women or the gender as a whole. I have heard women say things about their gender that a man would never dream of saying (aloud).

“Women are so supportive of each other yet...can be their own worst enemies.”

You are correct. I was talking to a woman the other day about that Rihanna/Chris Brown thing and the woman (an African-American) said “well you don’t know what Rihanna did to provoke Chris Brown.” So much for supporting a sister.

They needed a ‘Study’ to prove this?? Nice to see, in these very tenuous economic times the Brits have maintained funding for this crucial Social Research. The US follows suit and keeps pace in Porkulus.

I’d rather supervise a thousand men than 10 women.

And I'd rather work 12 hours a day in a foundry with all men than in a plush, climate-controlled office with all women.

Although, to be fair, the place I work in now has a lot of women and we all get along, with the exception of one. But that's very rare, and the first time in my life I've had an environment like I do now.

You can file this under the "Grumpy old men are grumpy" research.

They need a survey fot this? Just speaking from my experiences, men have a “code of silence” I guess. They very seldom turn against each other. Women however...you don’t need to be every where because they are going to report every thing each other does. They watch the men too.

While women can be intolerant of each other dosen’t mean it is safe for a man to offend one woman in a group.

women formed a negative view of their peers much quicker than men did.

Anyone who's worked with women in a professional setting (or even seen them interact in a family) could have told you this without spending a dime. I've seen women who are intelligent, kind, strong, fully developed emotionally and professionally say terrible things about each other (behind their backs, usually). I've never understood that.

After 25 years in a climate controlled hospital setting where 90% of my co-workers were women; yes, I'm a bit jaded.

Next thing you know someone will release a study proving boys and girls really are different.

They had to do a study on this? Oh please. I have supervised and been supervised by women. Give men in either case any time. Women can be so catty and mean and don’t forget a slight. Men usually won’t take offense at something a woman would, they take things was too seriously.

Men don't forget either (when they care to remember, that is). They just call it "business" and get away with it. A woman remembers and it's somehow always personal, a man remembers and it's business. I've worked in places where men are damn nasty, but it's always "just business."

When it comes to the internal political cat fighting that goes on between women, you are absolutely correct. Men can be completely oblivious to the fact that it is even happening, even if it is happening right now, right in front of their faces. And we like it that way.

That's not what I meant. I mean that what is mistaken for tolerance is often a case of just not knowing what the heck is going on -- and I don't mean just among the women in an office.

It's easy to appear affable and tolerant when you're blissfully unaware of the trouble you and/or others, or your policies, may be causing in an office. Haven't you ever had a jolly male co-worker who was dumb and blind to the problems he was creating?

Catz can't be herded. They have one conditioning mode. They can associate a certain sound with food. Think can opener sound and the cat comes running.

My catz are trained to "Soooieee, pigpigpig, sooieee!" Just because it ticked off the ex.

She may just feel that it is her job. Girls are raised to watch others. Our babies....we are taught how to watch them like hawks. We were also raised under a “fair” law and learned how to cry to momma if we thought we were being treated unfairly. Some are very verbal about it but we are the enforcers of safety and justice:’)
