James Scales, the university’s director of Career Services who was accused this month of lying about his military service, will retire effective March 1, university spokesman Rod Sievers said Friday.

Sievers said Scales will immediately utilize his vacation days and not return to work. According to a university statement, Scales cited health and personal reasons.

Scales hung up the phone when asked for comment from the DAILY EGYPTIAN.

“I have enjoyed my association with the university and value my colleagues here and the staff of Career Services,” Scales said in a statement released by the university. “It is time for me to retire and pursue other interests.”

Scales came under fire after the DAILY EGYPTIAN reported Scales’ records did not match stories he had told the paper about service in Vietnam and other countries, and the receipts of various military accolades, including three Purple Hearts.

The Stolen Valor Act makes it a federal offense to lie about the receipt of certain military awards, including the Purple Heart. Violators face up to a year in prison or a fine of up to $200,000.

“It was the best thing for him and for his health,” Dean of Students Peter Gitau said. “He was close to retirement even without the events of the past few weeks. It’s a good thing for the university too. It enables the department to move on and focus on other things.”

Proof - Military records obtained from the U.S. Army Human Resources Command shows that during Scales career, he was stationed in Germany, Kansas and Wisconson, only.

Lie - Father and uncles died in the Korean War

Proof - A check of a database with names of those killed or missing in action in the Korean War, found no one with the last name of Scales.

We have a guy in his lower ‘30s at my job who..

1 claims he’s a Gunnery Sgt.
2 claims he’s a sniper.
3 Claims he’s working for the CIA.

We have many military folks there who just give him that, “Look,” whenever he starts spouting off to the new temporary workers. The last one actually WAS a Marine.

We’re trying to restrain him, though. Don’t want the, “Gunny,” to get upset and call HR on us...

Back in the 80's as a teenager, I worked on a pipeline as a summer job. There was this dude whose list of imaginary accomplishments would boggle the mind.

For a late 30's, 5'5-ish, 270+ (morbid obese), red-haired/bearded, redneck with a hard twang, these were a few of them:

• Led Israeli Commandos In The 6 Day War
• Met Golda Meir & Awarded Medals From Same
• Army Ranger And/Or Green Beret
• Undercover Behind The Iron Curtain

The Marine is a temporary worker. Black guy, 52 years old, HELL of a worker. I love the guy.
The fake "Gunny" is the kind who would go run off and cry to the HR department, and the Marine would get canned.

I'd call him on it and I would talk in confidence to any friend you may have in HR to see what they can find out about the guy.

Decades ago my company had a shop supervisor who went thru our Mgt. training program who was ultimately discharged. Rather than get into all the details, the bottom line was that the guy was a pathological liar which even included his alleged college education.........

We had another employee who was hired to our sales dept. who claimed to have played football in the CFL. He was fired too for being a lousy employee and following his discharge all the facts of his being a pathological liar came to the surface.........

There’s my boss - Navy bootcamp discharge for medical, but her Sister served on the USS Abraham Lincoln as a First Class Petty Officer. An Army Bradley operator E-5 during Desert Storm. Another Navy Machinery Repair Third Calss. And our Marine temp -who’s Son is an E-6 Marine serving in Afghanistan. Then there’s me: 3rd Class Boatswain’s Mate.
