Why (and how) Specter voted for the Stimulus
The New York Times ^ | 2/13/09 | Gardiner Harris

Posted on 02/14/2009 12:13:58 AM PST by malkee

Democrats began to press Mr. Specter, saying he would get the $10 billion increase only if he promised to vote for the eventual bill. Mr. Specter pushed back, saying he was concerned about the size of the bill and its mix of tax credits and spending.

“I really do not make deals,” he said. And while he had promised Mr. Durbin nothing, the Illinois senator had made him a promise. As Mr. Durbin recalled, at a Super Bowl party at the White House on Feb. 1, “I told him, ‘I’m keeping my word.’ ”

More hard bargaining was ahead. Mr. Specter’s support was in doubt until the very end. And once he voted for the bill, Mr. Durbin said that he made sure that the additional $10 billion for the N.I.H. was protected in conference negotiations with the House.

Pat White, vice president for federal relations at the Association of American Universities, said that the past week had been one of most important in the health institute’s recent history, and that the credit went largely to Mr. Specter.

“He turned his support of N.I.H. into the fulcrum of the entire stimulus negotiations,” Mr. White said.

My other thought is why is the NYSlime selling him out now?

They are both slime. I guess there is no honor among thieves and slime.

"Turns out Laura Ingraham was right. That Superbowl Party at the White House was important"

You could tell she struck a nerve, just by hearing how suddenly and reflexively he reacted to her remarks. If I lived in PA, I would vote for the dem, or stay home if he survived the primary....AND YES, it would be one of those self destructive 'teaching them a lesson' protests. This bastard isn't worthy of any office, and is as bad as any liberal democrat.

How do you look in the mirror when you have sold out your country for your own personal advantage or pet project?

However worthy that project might be, this was still a form of treason.

Turns out Laura Ingraham was right. That Superbowl Party at the White House was important....

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Laura mopped the floor with Senator Exspecterant. "Young lady..."

At this juncture, conservatives must unite to oppose the three RINO traitors. IIRC, only Specter is up for re-election in 2010.

He must be challenged in a primary--and defeated--by a well financed conservative. Perhaps Pat Toomey? He lost a close primary challenge to Specter in 2004--after President Bush endorsed Specter (in one of the lowest ebbs in W's presidency).

Even if Toomey should lose the general election to a DemonRat, at least the R Senate caucus will be cleansed of one of its last remaining RINO traitors.

This is about more than one senate seat, it is about setting a precedent whereby conservatives will be rewarded with party money and safe seats. Liberal RINO traitors must be penalized with well-heeled conservative primary opponents. The RINO's must be withheld support from the RNC if they should make it to the general election. The Republicans must start enforcing party discipline!

Hey, I'd vote for Laura--and I don't even live in PA. :)

But seriously folks, has Laura ever lived in PA? If not, she hasn't a chance. I remember Alan Keyes running for the U.S. Senate against some unknown little IL state senator. Hmmm...his name escapes me...what was it?

Meh. I would worry more about defeating the 58 democrats who voted for it in the senate than our 3 defectors. I’ll give specter credit for pushing clarence thomas through and for basically stonewalling harriet meiers as well allowing for alito to be nominated.

There are going to be moderates in every party, I’d rather take out theirs than our own especially with the filibuster at stake.

Maybe its best to let the democrats have some governing done to teach the idiot generation that elected them into power what Jimmy Carter was like but worse.

While I would never wish ill health or bad omens against someone, in this case I will make an exception. Specter should get a disease that the NIH will not allow to be treated and be forced to die.

It has become obvious the Specter stands for little more than his own re-election. This country means little to him, the people mean little as well. The only thing that counts is his ego and his ability to bring home the pork. If the Republican Party stands for anything, this man and the two Maine idiots need to be censured in some way. At the very least they should be removed from ranking positions on whatever committees they serve on. My guess however is nothing will happen to these useful idiots.

And the Republican Party wonders why the continue to lose?

Just clear this up for me...is that the same Super Bowl party held at the warm, expansive, luxurious White House—while thousands of people in the midwest were without power in freezing temperatures and just trying to survive and stay warm?

That one?

Arlen Sphincter could have gotten $10,000,000,000 for the NIH without resorting to spending another $990+ billion on this stupid Pork bill. Hell, Sphincter, if the $10 billion was so important, why not debate it on the floor of the Senate on its own merits????

I was one who prayed for Arlen when he contracted his leukemia. He was certainly a sympathetic person. But this stupid turnaround on the fiscal future of America, this alliance with a party that has done nothing but push for a tax and spend spend spend is inexcusable.

The only thing that counts is his ego and his ability to bring home the pork.

Specter did not bring home the pork. The NIH is in Maryland.

Oh, Pennsylvania may get some grants for research, but so will other states.

Specter sold his vote for $10 billion that will not come to Pennsylvania.

Overheard at the Superbowl Party....

President Barack Husein Obama: "So tell me Senator Specter, would you sell your country down the river for $50 billion worth of pork?

Specter: "Why yes, Mr. President, I most certainly would."

Obama: "Would you do it for $5 million?

Specter: "$5 million? What kind of guy do you think I am?

Obama: "We've already established what kind of guy you are. Now, we're just haggling over price."

As Mr. Durbin recalled, at a Super Bowl party at the White House on Feb. 1, “I told him (Spector), ‘I’m keeping my word.’ ”

1) What is Spector doing partying with Democrat senators at an Obama Whitehouse?

2) Spector lied on national TV.

Ingraham: “Is it nice to be wined and dined at the White House?” Ingraham asked. “And, you’re treated pretty well when you’re a Republican bucking other Republicans, right Senator?”

Spector: “Now let’s get off it Laura,” Specter replied. “I’m not drinking any wine at the White House and I don’t dine at the White House. If the president wants to talk to me - I talk to him and I make my own independent judgment. Don’t give me the wine and dine baloney young lady.”

It seems worse than that, even. AS thinks he can cure cancer, just darn it, the other Senators won’t give him the money. And listen to Durbin in the article ‘I gave away #10 billion...” like it’s his to just give away.

Well it has become his to take and give away and we just have to take it.
