WASHINGTON – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid predicted Friday that Congress will finish its work on a massive, $790 billion economic stimulus plan, possibly by day's end, giving President Barack Obama a big victory.

Speaking as debate resumed on Capitol Hill, the Nevada Democrat said the Senate would likely vote on the package of spending and tax cuts later in the day and that the finished product could be sent to Obama's desk soon thereafter.

"We expect to be in a position to vote on adoption of the conference report," Reid said at the start of the Senate day.

Obama, addressing a White House group, noted that lawmakers had a "spirited debate" and said the legislation is "only the beginning" of what he considers necessary "to turn our economy around." The president did not get all he wanted out of the bill.

When Obama signs this bill, we will have another Day of Infamy. No disrespect to the soldiers who died on Pearl Harbor Day, but signing this bill will be the day that American capitalism died.

Assaults on our Constitutional protections, liberties, and rights are next on Obama’s agenda.

Do you know if this is an up or down vote or can this bill be filibustered in the senate.

ie is there still a 1% chance this monster can be stopped?

"... giving President Barack Obama a big victory..."

Actully, the GOP gets the victory by making Obama own this bill. His first term will be largely defined by this bill, which he sold with fear and urgency. This is his cure to the economy, and he is responsible for it. It isn't going to work, and the GOP needs to distance itself by not voting for it. The Maine senators and Specter are a lost cause, but they won't be re-elected if they decide to run again.

This is Obama's Iraq, but after six months of increased unemployment, it will be people from both parties criticizing him, and not just people from one party.

Yes,he will definitely own it, with Pelosi/Reid. But I think the reason Obama is moving with such speed, and demanding emergency action, is to make changes in programs that will prove impossible to reverse, even if (please, God!!), there is a 2010 political backlash (Gingrich Revolution II?).

It’s why they are disingenuously calling this spending bill, designed to reward his political supports, an emergency fiscal “stimulus.”

the signing is a major event for the future of our country and for our children and our grandchildren, and they won’t even take the time to read it, we won’t know what’s really in it until after Obama signs it. What a travesty.

I understand and agree with you on the impact on these programs, but our system has already been sliding toward more governmental power, and that was even for a time with the GOP in control of Congress and the Presidency. This bill speeds up the process to the tipping point much more rapidly than I could have hoped for; I just don't see most Americans willingly giving up control over their own lives. We're in for some unprecedented times as a country, and how the citizens react when it all starts to go rapidly downhill is the key to the future of the United States.

Probably not, you don't seem to understand how critical this is to Obama's photo op on Monday! What kind of a patriot would screw up this photo op?

Dow down 72, near the low of the day. I wonder if they'll manage to delay the vote until after the market closes. The old Friday afternoon news dump, LOL!

Instead of publishing the bill as a regular internet document -- which people can search by “key words” and otherwise, the Dems took hours to convert the final bill from the regular searchable format into “pdf” files, which can be read but not searched.

Three of the four .pdf files had no text embedded, just images of the text, which did not permit text searches of the bill. That move to conceal the bill’s provisions had not been remedied this morning at the time of publication of this article. (You can find the entire bill on the House Appropriations [http://appropriations.house.gov] website.)

So, what are they hiding? A lot.

We searched the bill randomly -- the only way possible -- to see what’s being hidden from the public and the members of Congress who will be voting on the bill today. We found one provision that may be a good example of why the Democrats are desperate to stop any exposure of what is in this bill. Like this gem:

SEC. 1607. (a) CERTIFICATION BY GOVERNOR -- Not later than 45 days after the date of enactment of this Act, for funds provided to any State or agency thereof, the Governor of the State shall certify that: 1) the State request and use funds provided by this Act , and; 2) funds be used to create jobs and promote economic growth.

(b) ACCEPTANCE BY STATE LEGISLATURE -- If funds provided to any State in any division of this Act are not accepted for use by the Governor, then acceptance by the State legislature, by means of the adoption of a concurrent resolution, shall be sufficient to provide funding to such State.

This provision --– apparently aimed at conservative governors such as South Carolina’s Mark Sanford who does not want the federal money -- would overturn state laws and constitutions, intervening directly in the state’s government to give the legislature the power to overturn a government’s decision.

This provision probably violates the US Constitution, a matter which will be of no concern to Congressional Democrats.

This act -- to strong-arm state governments and a governor’s ability to control the state budget -- is Chicago-style bipartisanship.

I’m considering dumping most of my mutual funds and stocks if this passes. We are no longer owners, the government is the owner in a planned society. I’m not recommending anyone do the same - it might turn out to be foolish - but this POR government has nothing but contempt for business, and I’m afraid business is being screwed by this bill, excepting Dem-affiliated businesses.

Hopefully, this mockery of our nation will be the impetus people need to wake up and do something to fight back.

You can take the PDF and turn it back into a text file.

I can take any document and easily turn it into a text file.

This is just a stupid argument.
