Patrick weighs 27 cent gas tax hike

BOSTON -- Gov. Deval Patrick is considering asking the Legislature to raise the Massachusetts gasoline tax by 27 cents per gallon as part of a comprehensive package aimed at solving lingering state transportation problems, The Associated Press learned Monday.

Such an increase would stave off a doubling of Massachusetts Turnpike tolls planned for this spring, and finance a wholesale change in the way state runs its transporation system, but leave it with the highest gasoline tax in the nation at 50.5 cents. And the plan calls for increasing that tax annually, based on the Consumer Price Index, starting Jan. 1, 2011.

A policy draft obtained Monday by the AP said the added taxes would be dedicated to paying down the debt of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, funding regional transit authorities and revamping tolls on the Turnpike.

Tolls would be removed west of Route 128 by the end of next year. Tolls within Route 128, from Weston to Boston, would come down as the state shifts to a program of tracking -- and charging -- all Massachusetts drivers based on the miles they travel.

Trips would be measured by a chip installed in a vehicle inspection sticker as soon as 2014, and in-state drivers would receive a gas-tax refund for their mileage to avoid double payments. Out-of-staters would remain subject to the higher gasoline tax.

Health care costs running away on you, raise gas taxes and tell people it's for roads.

After all, they never wanted any one to know what Soylent Green was made from.

The People’s Republic of Massachusetts hails again with their socialist levels of taxation jumping ahead of Taxifornia again....certainly to the detrement of their economy which runs on transportation but liberals know no other way to solve issues other than TAX IT TO DEATH.

Well, given the location, maybe another Boston Tea Party is in order for these folks???

A lot of states seem to be looking at this Liberal-Globalist inspired “chip”...it is already available on toll road E Pass/Sun Pass type of systems

This was also a similar plan for the Bush/Mexico/Canada NAFTA Super Highway

Sure -- only, this time, eliminate the "middleman" and dump the politicians in the harbor! ;-)

The General Court consists of Democrats who do not pay THEIR
taxes, and who force the taxpayers to pay THEIR increased fees, taxes, and THEIR two-tiered extra-special health care.

Out-of-staters would remain subject to the higher gasoline tax.

I guess if you have a tracking chip cemented to your forehead you can drive to Boston and walk the Freedom Trail, then pay another homage to freedom at the graves of Sam Adamas, John Hancock, and James Otis "Taxation without representation is tyranny.") at Granary Burying Ground.

My Grandpa 15 generations back is also there.

Make sure all of you read this article. It will be Obama's next marxist dream. One of the few companies making profit now is the oil companies. You can bet Hillary will have her say about taking windfall profits for healthcare. If you do well and do not need government bailouts they will find a way to bring you down anyway.

The last thing workers need right now is higher taxes on gas they need to get to work or employment interviews.

Health-care resources are not unlimited in any country, even rich ones like Canada and the U.S., and must be rationed either by price or time. When individuals bear no direct responsibility for paying for their care, as in Canada, that care is rationed by waiting.

Actually, FRiend, that is incorrect.
There is fraud involved, in Massachusetts and America:

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul , Minnesota,
points out some interesting facts concerning the Presidential Election2008

* Number of States won by: Democrats: 19 Republicans: 29
* Square miles of land won by: Democrats: 580,000 Republicans: 2,427,000
* Population of counties won by: Democrats: 127 million Republicans: 143 million
* Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Democrats: 13.2 Republicans: 2.1

Who do you think ran Bambi’s “Hope a Dope campaign?”
David Axelrod. Who do you think ran Patrick’ s “Yes we can!” Campaign? David Axelrod.
Where do Bambi and Doooval hail from? Chicago.

Amazing.. isn’t it?

Tracking chips...

There would have to be a very expensive tracking network setup. Expensive screwups would be common, with liens on vehicles while they are straightened out. And, to anyone who doesn't think the tracking of their vehicle wouldn't be linked to police or political databases, you're not very imaginative. Privacy goes out the window... because the Big Dig was over budget.

I'm a taxachusetts voter. Wish I could escape, but can't right now due to circumstances beyond my control.

Don't let your residence in another state lull you into complacency. With the country now being run by Blue-state communists, MA and CA are the canaries in the coal mine.

Another Kennedy legacy that keeps on giving:

State-owned vehicle tracking chips mounted on your private vehicle and monitored by the Massachusetts State Police and other state agencies. All in the name of “revenue”.

This in the state that championed freedom from government repression and unfair taxation. A state now full of liberals.

The dumping of tea into newly clean up Boston Harbor might be in violation of newly enacted Clean Water Laws. Might one possibly suggest dumping the POLITICIANS into Boston Harbor?
Besides, that British ship left a long time ago.

I think Ahhhnoldd knows oil companies already pay more than any other corporation with 3/4 of their profit going to government taxes. Albeit a large profit in that 1% but one gallon of gas is a lot of work to get it to the pump. Government only sees they can steal money from anyone making a profit.

Like Bawney Fwank says, we can get the money we need. There is a lot of rich people out there. What a A**.

Californians pay 63.9 tax per gallon for unleaded and 72.0 for diesel in California.

You know, with a tracking chip installed on vehicles, it would take only one more legislative session for a democrat bill enabling ticketing for speed based on chip information. Imagine having the speed police able to spring into action to finance every manner of new spending (and to makeup for deficits).

Yeah, don’t try cutting costs at all.

Oh, he cut all right...last year's budget was 28.2 million. This year's is...28.0 million. That's almost an entire 1% cut! Use your best Ben Stein Clear-Eyes voice: Wowwwww.

What happens if the sticker...ahem...is defective or meets with a mishap (damn that Windex)? No refund? Fine. I'll pay the damn tax to avoid being tracked.

Deval Patrick is the Obama prototype, and he's revived the name Taxachusetts. Get ready for this on a national level.
