I remember this delightful elderly white woman who, after Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination, looked into the television camera and told America that she would never vote for him because “he’d only take care of the blacks.” Now that Obama has been elected, I’m picking up on self-pity, worry, paranoia, resentment, and victimhood among some white Americans, especially thin-skinned white males.

I didn't vote for Obama because of his policies. That said, I agree with this line.

The fact that Americans just elected Barack Obama president says more about our capacity to knock down walls than our tendency to erect new ones.

To go one step further, the only reason many Americans voted for McCain was because of Palin, a woman, which is another sign of our willingness to knock down barriers.

It seems to me that Mr. Navarrette shares Obozo’s resentment of whites.

Yes, there was discrimination toward Blacks & Hispanics. But this should be taken in historic perspective.

Government miss-treatment of the white population in the Deep South during Reconstruction, cemented bias toward blacks (and Northerners).

Governmental miss-treatment of the white settlers in Texas brought about the Texas War of Independence from Mexico. That cemented bias toward some Hispanics in Texas. (note- there were also Mexicans who fought for independence then.)

Yes, it still exists in some places, but it is a reciprocal thing. And much diminished in the white community.

Black racism appears to be on the rise since Obozo’s election.

Seeing how these are the very attributes which have caused so much pain for the black community, I think the author is playing a little game.

I am picking up none of this. The occassional troll and racist (yes, they exist), I've seen mostly anger at the rise of socialism in this country due to Obama. Indeed, the only one of these things I've seen is worry--worry that our way of life is being pushed aside in a tide of liberal identity politics.

Someone is obsessed with Obama's race, but it sure ain't the folks who oppose his politics.

Growing up in a segregated city I saw lots of prejudice and racism. There were plenty of prejudiced racist whites back then, but certainly also prejudiced and racist blacks. I have to say, as I look now I am amazed at how far we’ve come and I almost never see or hear prejudice from the whites I interact with. I’m sure it still exists in many places, but I honestly rarely see it. On the other hand, I still see a fair amount of black anti-white prejudice and racism. This will change too, but in my opinion that’s where we are now. I want us to live in a color blind society. As long as politicians continue to use race to their advantage we will have a difficult time getting there.
