Confusion reigns as California braces for government shutdown Friday
Mercury News ^ | 2/5/09 | Edwin Garcia

Posted on 02/05/2009 8:26:37 PM PST by NormsRevenge

SACRAMENTO — With Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's historic furlough of more than 200,000 state employees set to begin Friday , a major labor union warned that the state is ill-prepared to handle the work stoppage.

Leaders of SEIU Local 1000, which represents at least 80,000 employees being furloughed, reviewed dozens of memos directed to state workers by management this week and concluded the directives are rife with "chaos and contradictory information."

"There's mass confusion," union President Yvonne Walker said, adding that many employees late Thursday didn't know if they should show up for work Friday because they were unsure if their workplace would be open.

In a cash-saving move as the state hunts solutions to a $40 million deficit through mid-2010, Schwarzenegger is shuttering state departments and agencies — including the DMV — every other Friday.

The state Department of Personnel Administration, which represents the governor's office in state employment issues, expressed confidence that California's first-ever furlough has been communicated properly.

"We are dealing with the management at the various state departments and agencies, and made it as clear as we can how they should implement the furlough," said administration spokeswoman Lynelle Jolley.

The furlough order signed by Schwarzenegger in December affects 238,000 employees. It is expected to save about $1.3 billion over the next 17 months.

“$40 million deficit”

I am certain it was $40 BILLION and not $40 Million. I think Obama received more than $40 Million from Hollywood fundraisers alone during the campaign. If this is all that is required, have Babs slap on the outfit and sing through her nose and invite all of Hollyweird to another dinner gala and Infant Sacrifice in the Messiah’s honor.

It seems furloughing all those employess for $1.3 billion would be a bit overkill for a paltry $40 million. Oprah alone could save California without even losing a digit of her bank account balance.

“$40 million deficit through mid-2010,”

That can’t be right, must be 40 BILLION. Or 1/10th of 4 trillion since all these big numbers are out lately.

Fire’em all and the state will run very nicely. Since most do nothing anyway.

Also the savings of 1.3 billion are off. Should be more like $16 Billion. i.e. (238,000 X $50,000 (low ball) )*(17/12)= $16.8 billion.

Journalists don't do math.

But on Friday, all ERs will still be open for illegals needing bandages, antibiotics, or kidney transplants. All schools will be open for the children of illegals. Many of these kids will be getting free meals and medical and dental care. Meals will be served to many illegal aliens in California jails, the heat will be on in their cells, and some will have expensive surgery. Law enforcement will be chasing, following, apprehending, and being shot at by illegal gangbangers. Courts will be open, with public defenders stepping up to speak for various arrested illegals.

In fact, government is hardly needed at all. What are the main functions of government? Defense and public safety. All other departments in federal, state and local government should be eliminated. Keep the military, the police, courts, prisons and executioners, and fire departments. Nothing else is needed.

Convene the legislature every other year for a max of 3 months, say Nov. to Jan over the holiday season.

That would help rein in the out of control legislative process. No state needs a full time legislature.

Schwarzenegger is shuttering state departments and agencies — including the DMV — every other Friday.

Like this makes a difference to any law-abiding Californian? I renewed my driver's license, my wife's driver's license and the registration on BOTH of my cars, and never came within 2 miles of a DMV office (I think that's how close the nearest office is to my house).

The California DMV, all things considered, has quite a good online system for renewals. Got a notice in the mail with the information on what to do, how much they wanted, and a URL where I could do it. And they do process the online renewals pretty quick.

As far as I'm concerned, Schwarzen-Kennedy can close the DMVs EVERY Friday, even after they figure how to screw us in the name of "the children".

No, just fire or eliminate 50,000+ state positions and those that are left, like CHP get their wages, benefits and opulent pensions reduced by about 45 percent across the board.

Give all these over paid state workers a taste of what those that are paying their fat salaries are going through.

California has been governed by radical liberal PC democrats for decades now and the chickens are now coming home to roost. Californians deserve every bit of this however, I do feel sorry for the conservatives who are stuck there without a voice. Even as the state is swirling in the toilet bowl these idiot legislators continue to push this PC crap and add to the burden the taxpayers and citizens must bear.

Ever wonder why Hussein wants it next week, Thursday in particular?

Agreed. I would think the last thing Obama, Reid, and Pelosi would want to do is close down the federal government. However, closing down their respective state governments would be the first thing that Texas Gov Rick Perry and S.C. Gov Mark Sanford would want to do to bridge a budget shortfall -- based on their recent statements about not accepting stimulus money for their states.

Good point. There is NO constitutional authority for the Federal “government” to tax the nation to cover one state’s operating expenses. They can make Federal expenditures within a state (pork) but not subsidize operating costs due to the balanced budget requirement. The laws of this country no longer apply. Its a free for all.

Can’t say I agree. Roads can be privatized by selling them to private corporations to run as toll roads. National state, local, parks, forests, monuments, etc. should also be privatized. All other governmennt functions should be eliminated (eg, Dept of Education, FDA, etc.) or privatized (eg, sewers, water, schools, airports, etc.).
