ROBOTS will be armies of the future in a case of science fact catching up to fiction, a researcher said today. Peter Singer, who has authored books on the military, warned that while using robots for battle saves the lives of military personnel, the move has the potential to exacerbate warfare by having heartless machines do the dirty work.
"We are at a point of revolution in war, like the invention of the atomic bomb," Mr Singer said.
"What does it mean to go to war with US soldiers whose hardware is made in China and whose software is made in India?"
Mr Singer predicts that US military units will be half machine, half human by 2015.

nice thing about it you dont have to wait 17 years for another batch
Here’s why the right to bear arms includes heavier ordiance than just pistols, shotguns and rifles.
I, for one, welcome our merciless robot overlords.
Oh, Peter Singer could be handled with an average garage or kitchen utensil. Hypothetically, of course ...
I wonder if he thinks he’s had an original idea; maybe he doesn’t read any fiction books or go to movies.
Thats hate-speach and your children will report you to all knowing and all seeing collective
Killer robots could be a reality tomorrow, literally tomorrow, just by modifying some lines of code on our Predators and other armed UAVs.
Just order them to find humans outside after curfew, in a denied area. They can do that today. You would not need a person to make the decision to drop the missile.
Is this the guy that was controversial by promoting infanticide? Or was that Eric Singer? Maybe he was a drummer for Kiss.

In the near term we will see battle machines that are controlled by remote human operators.
Just think of the predator drone taken several generations into the future...on land, sea and air.
Operators could be in their own home in the US and also stalking the battlefields half a world away.
Probably a type of immersive virtual reality interface.
People from their teens to 80+ will be sought to control the things... a great way to spend those retirement years for old soldiers.
Sometimes I hate to see the future come :-(
Hard to make a robot more "merciless" than this psycho.
“...exacerbate warfare by having heartless machines do the dirty work”
I have no problem with us using heartless machines to fight their heartless terrorist machines.
One has to be highly educated to be that dumb.
Below are the rules that will govern robots. Per Isaac Asimov.
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such
protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law
Sez you, Asimov? Do you think the Nazis would program hunter killer drones to follow his "rules for robots?" Hell no. And neither will the Chinese, Russians, etc.
I misstyped the first words, I meant to say, “Sez WHO, Asimov?”
Battlebots!
Yea but in the end it will be fist to fist, man vs man.
And they will even run for governor of California.
The future of war is with the ability to “get” the operators.
Not very easy if they’re on the other side of the planet, from where you are hiding in caves, afraid to peek outside, or even turn on any electronic device.
Ronny Cox has to be the best corporate A-Hole Hollywood ever created.
What side you on?
;)
Precisely my point. "You" will have already lost if that is your position.
The "decapitation" attack, albeit with a few new twists, will be the only one worth mounting.

You forgot the zeroth law.
“Killer robots could be a reality tomorrow, literally tomorrow,”
If not already: Reaper, plus a few not in the public domain.
Attacking the ground stations isn’t an option, either, as they are mobile now.
I doubt older folks will have the lower reaction time, blazing fast reflexes and great hand to eye coordination required for remote operations. Therefore I wouldn’t worry about anyone over 40 being called on for them.
a bot's job!
but give my dead-gum id back!
my #34 post!
I, for one, welcome our new merciless robot overlords.
The REAL Laws of Robots
1. A robot will not harm authorized Government personnel but will terminate intruders with extreme prejudice.
2. A robot will obey the orders of authorized personnel except where such orders conflict with the Third Law.
3. A robot will guard its own existence with lethal antipersonnel weaponry, because a robot is bloody expensive.
Yah, and once it was thought that the crossbow would make war unwinnable and therefore impossible to wage. Oh well.
Me... I’ll still keep my longsword handy, right alongside my modern weapons. It has the advantage of never needing to be reloaded. :-)
Actually crossbow was first weapon to be banned because it disturbed the social order per church.
It allowed a peasant to take down an noblemen in suite of armor.

I got crazy lucky with this getup.
As long as they don’t interfere with the production of cheap California wine.
Merciless robots as opposed to merciful robots?
Old curmudgeons need to know...
