Lawton Oklahoma's gun laws are the weakest in the nation according to the James Brady Campaign that led the way to sweeping gun law reform in the 1990s. It says Oklahoma's weak gun laws are helping to feed the illegal gun market. Out of 100 possible points, the group gave the state a mere two points. The foundation focused on areas such as the state's background check system, child-safety regulations, and efforts to curb firearm trafficking - Oklahoma was given a zero in each of those areas.
The Brady Campaign always has pushed for tough gun regulations, but former Chief of Police and current Cameron University Criminal Justice Professor Danny Ford says he believes that tougher laws would likely have very little effect on crime. From the streets as police officer to the classroom as a professor, Danny Ford has studied gun crimes and firearm regulations for years. "You usually affect the law abiding citizen (with stricter regulations), and you don't affect the person who's going to have the gun anyway for purposes it was never intended for," he said. "The criminals will have the weapons no matter what kind of law - a lot of times - you make."
The Brady Campaign wants Oklahoma - and other states - to do more, such as requiring permits to purchase guns, and making every gun sold in the state childproof. Ford says the survey focused on some items previously under the ban on assault weapons that expired under President Bush. "It only takes one bullet to take a person out, so just because you limit the number of rounds doesn't mean the person is not going to use that weapon," he said.
He does say he would like to see Oklahoma and the survey improve upon gun education, which Ford says he believes would save more lives than laws would. "Informing people how to keep the weapons safe, how go ahead and possess the weapon and still keep it safe, and at the same time not limit their rights to keep and bear that arm," he said.
California fared best in the survey, and got 79 out of a possible 100 points. Ford says California's grade underscores his point since gun crimes certainly are a problem in California. Oklahoma got its only two points in the guns in public category which includes colleges allowing guns on campus. Last year, state lawmakers shot down a bill that would have allowed possession of a firearm on campus.
Texas scored nine points and you can see the full report at http://www.stategunlaws.org/.
Congrats!
What’s the crime rate in Oklahoma?
Kudos Oklahoma!
Woo-Hoo OK!!! If those scummy Brady bass-turds have a problem with you, then you’re doing something right!
We believe in the 2nd Amendment here, not just lip service.
OMG, let’s see....Oklahoma scores “low” and doesn’t have a gun problem....CA scores “high” and does have a gun problem. So...it’s not that their thinking is cranially-rectally inverted, it’s that those high-scoring states have an invented problem for not conforming with the goofball thinking. Does that capture the “feeeeeeling”?
There is one bright spot: If this country can take 4 years of this kind of mind-numbing idiocy, we’ll be masters of the solar system.
Ping.
Wear that like a badge of honor, Okies! Hang tough!
It would really be telling the if the Brady people included each state’s violent crime rate alongside its respective gun law score.
Writing a story on it is like advertising to out-of-state criminals to come shopping. Libs are real smart!
I want a re-count :’)
I want a re-count :’)
I'm proud to be a Sooner!
I always liked Kentucky. Now I have another reason to like it! Oklahoma, too!
JoMa
I was about to say... being told you are at the bottom of the Brady Campaign’s scorecard is an honor!!! The founding fathers would be proud!
What the Brady Campaign fails to recognize is that the NRA has a very strong presence in Oklahoma, complete with excellent gun safety training not only for youth and new gun owners, but also for longtime gun owners who want to brush up on safety skills. The Brady Campaign regards the NRA with contempt and views anything but its own training programs as insufficient.
As for childproofing guns, every gun shop and every gun show I have attended displays, sells and educates gun shoppers on the importance of using childproof devices on all guns in homes where children are or might be present. This is done on a voluntary, educational basis—not as a mandated gun law that is little more than a sneaky method to register and control gun ownership.
I couldn’t be prouder to read that my state is at the very bottom of the Brady Campaign’s scorecard.
Someone like to do some homework? Is there a correlation? My guess is, the higher the Brady score, the higher the state crime rate. Anyone with me on that?
And every one of your counties voted for Palin over the Messiah in November. I’m thinking you live in paradise!
Kentucky, Is third from the bottom...(two above OK.)
Good news. And the Schumacher gun/knife show in Tulsa draws dealers from around the country. I bet that chaps the Brady Bunch too.
Time to move to Oklahoma.
I guess it is going to take some deep soul searching if Idaho intends to solve this problem.:(
I can show you my Oklahoma CCW permit. :)
And yes I do carry my gun with me.
Kind of like golf!
In fact, I've been known to refer to target shooting as "nitrocellulose golf".
OK isn’t a source of so called illegal weapons. OK isn’t behind in educating its youth on guns as every Dad who gives his age 16 daughter a purse pistol says to her, “Be careful to aim as you shoot at any guy who tries to rape you.” OK citizens understand the right to bear arms is a sigh of freedom and responsibility.
Besides being on the right side of the Constitution (especially our 2A rights), I heard that Oklahoma is the ONLY state, this last election, where EVERY SINGLE county voted RED.
No sellouts, RINOs, or FAUX "conservatives" of any number to speak of.

"It's the lowest grade of any state. It's the lowest grade in Brady history!"
I guess I'll have to celebrate this by going to the National Gun Day show next month and picking up something new. ;-)
Actually, our score is the same as that of Louisiana and Oklahoma, just they put it in alphabetical order for states with the same score. So we are tied for first!!!
Louisiana 48

I'm sure he approves of our tie for last place.
later
....I like, the way your thinkin'

Saaaaa-LUTE!!
Cool.
Congratulations Oklahomans!
Guess Texas has some work to do to get a “better” score!
I spend 20 years in OK, and shot guns the whole time. But I beg to disagree--are indeed majestic mountains in OK--the Wichita Mountains, between Altus and Lawton. I used to climb and hunt in those mountains. Loved it! Go Tipton Tigers!
Bump
OK, I accept your correction. The mountains in southern Oklahoma are indeed majestic, and very old. When I made my statement, I was thinking more of larger, younger mountain chains further west. No offense intended. The Sooner State is really a pretty good place to live, all things considered. I’ve been here for over 40 years.
