Candidate for R.N.C. Chairman Drops Out

Chip Saltsman, the candidate for national Republican chairman who came under fire for distributing a holiday CD with the parody song “Barack the Magic Negro,” dropped out of the contest Thursday night.

Mr. Saltsman, who is the Tennessee Republican chairman, sent an e-mail message to members of the Republican National Committee announcing his decision. The message made no mention of why he was dropping out, but Republicans have said for days that Mr. Saltsman was struggling to collect enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. The vote is on Friday in Washington.

Mr. Saltsman was always viewed as something of a long shot, but his prospects dropped after the disclosure that he had sent out the CD. He declined to repudiate the action, and he came under attack from such Republican leaders as Newt Gingrich, a former House speaker.

His decision leaves five people on the ballot: Mike Duncan, the current Republican chairman; Michael Steele, a former lieutenant governor of Maryland; J. Kenneth Blackwell, a former Ohio secretary of state; Kate Dawson, the South Carolina Republican chairman; and Saul Anuzis, the Republican chairman from Michigan

This vote is tomorrow?

Anyone know how to get a CD with the catchy tune "Barack the Magic Negro?"

I’m not sure how important this is. But I hope Michael Steele wins.

And why would this disqualify him? The thing has been passed around over email for a year, mostly by Republican voters. I don’t know a thing about Saltsman but if this is the disqualifying factor, it’s stupid, and once again the Republicans kowtow to stupidity. They still can’t figure out how the other party is in control of congress. Hello? They’re too busy putting ointment on the chapped hands they keep wringing.

I believe this is quite important. In fact, I recently included current chairman Duncan on my letter writing list. After all, the National GOP Chair is one of the top ranks in GOP leadership.
