COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- An Ohio man was in custody Saturday after three people were found shot at the scene of a fire.
The fire was reported at a building in the 9700 block of Sacremento Street at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Police said that when they arrived at the home, they saw a man outside armed with an assault rifle. The man then ran back inside the home, officers said.
Rescue units noticed smoke as they tried to get inside the home.
When police made it inside, they found the three victims -- a man, a woman and a teenage girl. The woman and the male victim died at the scene. The teenaged victim was taken to a hospital where she later died.
The victims were identified as Jerry Sturgel, 51, his wife, Mary Sturgel, 40, and their 13-year-old daughter, Emily Nicole Hurst, police said.
The Hamilton County Sheriffs office said that Timothy Sturgel, 26, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder.
Officers said he was taken into custody at the scene and transported to the sheriffs headquarters for questioning.
Detectives said that Sturgel didnt make a formal statement and did not give any reason for the shooting.
Investigators said that Jerry Sturgel was Timothy Sturgel's adoptive father. Hurst was the daughter of Mary Sturgel and the stepsister of Timothy Sturgel.
A neighbor to the victims, Tom Campbell, said that he caught the incident on camera and that he thinks he videotaped the shooter, as well. The police confiscated the tape, Campbell said.
Investigators said that they have not found the assault rifle the shooter was allegedly holding. They said they believe he hid it inside the home when he set the house on fire.
Investigators said that cause of the fire still hasnt been determined but they are considering it to be suspicious.
Partnership with law enforcement. At its best.
Did they have a warrant? I doubt it.
No, at its worst.
Considering the cause of the fire to be “suspicious” is probably a good start, Inspector.
“they saw a man outside armed with an assault rifle”
Great.. here we go..
I hope he at least took the time to call 911 while filming.
Mark my words, this incident is going to be used as heavy fodder for the next push for another AWB.

Is it just me or does a disproportionate number of adopted kids end up killing someone in their adopted family?
So another way of putting it.
This happy family of three chose to adopt a kid older than their daughter. The kid was way beyond the time to live at home and he killed the entire family that had helped him.
Time to do background check on the kids being adopted and not just anal background checks on the foster homes.
you dont think he handed the tape willingly to the cops? confiscated does not indicate it was necessarily taken by force.
I assumed the shooter was adopted when he was a child.
I beg to differ. It only goes downhill from there. That’s as good as it gets.
I’m betting it was BO’s IRS collection service.
Perhaps the neighbor volunteered the tape. Or, they might have asked for it in such a way as to give the neighbor the idea that no warrant was needed. I’m not sure but what they could demand the tape once the neighbor made them aware of its existence.
The guy quoted was the guy who made the tape. He didn’t say “I gave it to the cops” he said “the tape was confiscated.”
perhaps using large words w/o full knowledge of their meaning? I hear it on the court tv shows all the time.....
Maybe. Maybe not.
Sturgel, who was adopted, allegedly heard voices that sometimes told him to do bad things, said Cindy Smith, his father's cousin. See link.
This sounds like another nutcase who is likely ineligible to purchase or possess a firearm. Too late. He will try to dodge the death penalty with a "diminished capacity" claim. The taxpayers will be stuck paying for his room and board for life.
well, I’m sure it will make the national news soon, they need this kind of story to prove that guns kill people, people don’t kill people...
well, the tape WAS confiscated. you are assuming that this guy didn’t want to give it to the cops and the cops grabbed it. time is of the essence in exigent circumstances like this.
Where does it say that? To me it reads like this is a second marriage for both...the mother had a daughter by a previous marriage and the dad had an adopted son.
A local acquaintance who sometimes works at the local gun shop related his horror story. His dad often chose to play "foster parent". One of the kids turned out to be a homicidal maniac. On multiple occasions it was necessary to rescue his father from being killed by the foster child. Some people never learn.
Many of the kids out for foster care come from abusive homes. By the time they are in the "system" for foster care, they have behavior problems that make them dangerous to bring into a civilized household.
A warrant for WHAT? Did you actually READ the story? Check it out -
Police said that when they arrived at the home, they saw a man outside armed with an assault rifle.
Perhaps, but this isn't how I'd describe a voluntary surrender.
"The police confiscated the tape"
Confiscating the neighbor's tape. But of course, you knew that since I quoted the relevant language in my original post 3.
Or should I paraphrase your comment? 'Did you actually READ the story post?'
Of course, some of us don't recognize the abrogation of the Fourth Amendment.
I flipped channels the other night and caught the mayor of Miami decrying “the weapons of war” after a shooting down there a night or two ago. He just kept rambling on and on about “assault” weapons. He never once mentioned the shooter.
Also, Prayers for the family in the article.
Hmmm, two “assault rifle” stories in one day. And they can’t find the second “assault rifle”, amazingly.
Time for some paranoia meds. ;-)
Do you get out much?
Surely you are not demanding that mainstream journalists should have a reasonable command of the English language?
I've read that scientists recently developed a way to do that, but this girl was thirteen.
RIP.
........
Perhaps not in Cuba. We are talking US law here.
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Want the tape from my camera? Get a warrant, or get a lawyer to defend you in a 1983 action.
I'm either an optimist, or showing my age, aren't I?
Timothy Sturgel was the adopted son of Jerry
The article was wrong in claiming him to be her step brother since Jerry hadn't adopted her too.
I was merely pointing out that the happy 'family' didn't adopt the killer...the father had done that previously.
OR - you can be a good citizen and give up the tape as EVIDENCE TO A CRIME! (I'm kinda glad I don't live next to you...)
A neighbor to the victims, Tom Campbell, said that he caught the incident on camera and that he thinks he videotaped the shooter, as well.
"The police confiscated the tape"
Don't forget to read with you "media filter" glasses on - it could very well be that the neighbor volunteered the tape. Or not. I'm not saying that it wasn't confiscated, but I do think a second opinion is in order.
I’m still wondering how Hurst could be the daughter of Timothy Sturgel’s stepsister and Mary Sturgel. Or maybe the poor writing is the reason the “journalist” who wrote this isn’t named.
Sure it is. There’s simply no opportunity even to let the guy make a copy for himself, the hour it might take would probably doom the investigation. < Rolls eyes >
You’re probably not far off.
Weak attempt at diversion.
