Ensign: GOP will look toward Obama for cooperation (time to “put the country before our party.”)
The Hill ^ | 1/21/09 | Klaus Marre

Posted on 01/21/2009 9:24:55 AM PST by NormsRevenge

Sen. John Ensign (Nev.) on Wednesday indicated that Republicans would look to work with President Obama more than their Democratic counterparts in Congress.

“It’s really not a time to be obstructionist,” Ensign, chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, said on Fox News. “It’s a time where we as a party need to try to work with especially President Obama and try to solve some of the country’s problems.”

The senator said Republicans would still voice their disagreements but would seek out issues on which they can cooperate with the new president.

“As a matter of fact, I think he might have a little easier time working with us than he’s going to have working with a Democrat-controlled Congress,” Ensign said, adding that “as President Obama has come in, he has talked like he wants to govern from the center. Well, the Democrats in the Congress are certainly not governing from the center.”

The Republican senator, who praised Obama for having some “really good ideas” coming into office, said given the myriad of challenges facing the nation, it is time to “put the country before our party.”

The Gutless Ol' Party rolls over and offers to play dead.

Something they have been trying to perfect for the last decade.. playing dead to the realization of the power they held to head off this rush to socialism.. and now wanting to make nice nice.

Putzes.

Pathetic.

They should cooperate as much as the DemoncRATs did.

But, no, they will “put country first”, which is a euphemism for giving the communists whatever they want, just as long as they don’t have to get involved in any icky debates.

Republicans cower whenever a Leftist calls them names or accuses them of “racism”.

This is just sickening. It could be a long struggle but I'm beginning to realize that a third party is the only way for the future. The Republican Party is dead. They are quitters and stand for nothing.

No need to ask why I am now an Independent. This is why. While I realize Independents have little chance, presently, of impacting anything in Washington, at least I am supporting a party that cares about this country, its core principles and values, including protecting its Constitution and the freedoms of the INDIVIDUAL.

Go away GOP and come back when you again support conservatism and the REAL America.

Well, what time is it Senator? Time to roll over again, present your backside and play nice?

I am damn sick and tired of “Republicans” who have not got the stones to stand up and say “NO”.

Every last one of them should be expelled from office.

I will NEVER vote for another Republican that is not a CONSERVATIVE. I voted for McLame only because of Palin, and I am moderately ashamed of myself for giving in. Never again.

Cooperation with these cretin is really a stupid approach.

The last thing we need to do is divide the Republican Party. But if they don’t wake up and stop blaming the conservative base, there will be an internal battle for control.

If the internal power struggle by the base fails, another party will emerge.

“It’s really not a time to be obstructionist,”

This is why we're where were at, why the dims control Congress and why we lost the election.

Lofty ideals work fine when both parties adhere to them, but the dims have been playing dirty since Clinton. Until we stop trying to be everybody's friend, we're going to continue to get sand kicked in our faces and be the minority party.

My liberal father and I almost got into an argument this morning about this. He said “You must not love this country if you don’t want Obama to succeed. If he succeeds, we all succeed”.

I told him he had been watching Olbermann (who he watches religiously) too long and if Obama succeeds in his goals WE ALL FAIL. HIS SUCCESS WILL BE OUR FAILURE.

Why can’t people figure this out and get off this ‘unity’ bandwagon?

Can I be a hippy? Weren’t hippies once upon a time against confirmity?

Call me the new hippy. Except I bath.

The responsibility of the opposing party is to oppose.

If the leaders of the “Stupid Party” think they can “work with” the Democrats, they are breathtakingly ignorant of how the left/liberals/Democrat Party operates; that is, no disagreement or diversity of opinion is tolerated by these “people of tolerance”. What we are seeing and will soon suffer under is one-party (i.e., unchallenged) rule.

Why are we not seeing more discussion of getting constitutional candidates elected?

Since Republican after Republican are now just merging with the Democratic Party, there needs to be a demonstration by conservatives that the Republican Party can be replaced.

What does it accomplish now to remain loyal to the Republican Party? I too believe in Country before party. Country before party now (IMHO) is to rattle the Republican Party with some candidates that put Country first in the Constitutional direction . . . third party candidates where necessary (actually nation-wide is now necessary). I hope it begin’s with a particular Arizona US Seante seat occupied by a guy whose surname begins with Mc.

Look, it's difficult not to detest the GOP "leadership" (oxymoron alert!) for their weak-kneed, spineless ways in recent times. But I'm guessing that this is a strategic move on Ensign's part.

He knows that there is likely to be friction between the White House and Congress, particularly the House, over which Nancy Pelosi has set herself up as Empress rather than Speaker. Ensign might be attempting to work a little "triangulation" here by using Obama's desire to appear centrist and conciliatory against him, setting him up publicly against Pelosi, who is virtually demanding the criminal prosecution of Bush officials among other highly partisan goals.

Understood. But I believe we need to take a long term view. Right now a lot of the nation is having a “lovefest” with Obama. You and I realize that the socialist policies the the democratic party wants to implement will fail. Now, more than ever conservatives need to stick to their principles. Yes, we will lose battles and elections, but when their policies fail, and they will, we will have an alternative to offer. We really didn’t have a conservative running in the presidential election, I think that’s why we lost. Let the democrats own their programs. Plus, it will be enjoyable to watch Pelosi and Obama go at it.
