One reason Michelle Obama might be so popular at the White House coffee this morning is that she brought gifts.
From ABC's Sunlen Miller: "Upon arriving at the White House, this morning Michelle Obama presented Mrs. Bush with a gift. It was a pen and journal for her memoirs."
The thing is, we all know what the gift is now, but Mrs. Bush might not! The eagle-eyed Ann Compton reports: "Laura took the box inside but didnt open it ... she could be seen as she handed it to an aide."
Gosh I hope she doesn't re-gift, because that would be embarassing!
Our DC crew reports that the gift appeared to come in a bag from the "Tiny Jewel Box," a tony store in Washington.

Great. All she has to do is publish at least two memoirs and she can jumpstart her political career.
Oh - I thought she would have brought one of Fred Sanford’s empty beer bottles.
I can see that the media doesn’t understand etiquette or protocol. Of course, it will be a long four years.
I don’t mean to sound critical but wouldn’t it be less tedious to write memoirs on a laptop computer?

Good thing there is no rule of etiquette that would demand Laura open the gift in the presence of the gifter.
You just never know.
And another thing; the pen and paper could be taken either way; "write a tell-all memoir", or simply "keep in touch".
Which way do you suppose it was intended?
Actually, I am not sure Laura Bush can keep that gift. All gifts have to be catalogued and put away or some such thing. If Mrs. Obama had truely wanted to give Laura Bush a gift, then she should have sent it on Wednesday.
Very presumptuous of Michelle to bring a gift. Mrs. Bush had to hold it behind her for pics until she could pass it off to a Secret Service agent. Dollars to Donuts it is left behind.
It depends on the monetary value of the gift. Laura Bush will be able to keep the journal, lol.
Hmm - after those water bottles are empty, they could be re-filled with commemorative 0bama “water”.
