Our world may be a giant hologram
New Scientist ^ | January 15th, 2009 | Marcus Chown

DRIVING through the countryside south of Hanover, it would be easy to miss the GEO600 experiment. From the outside, it doesn't look much: in the corner of a field stands an assortment of boxy temporary buildings, from which two long trenches emerge, at a right angle to each other, covered with corrugated iron. Underneath the metal sheets, however, lies a detector that stretches for 600 metres.

For the past seven years, this German set-up has been looking for gravitational waves - ripples in space-time thrown off by super-dense astronomical objects such as neutron stars and black holes. GEO600 has not detected any gravitational waves so far, but it might inadvertently have made the most important discovery in physics for half a century.

I agree. I think that, conceptually at least, this actually fits with a God Creator idea very well....if not better.

It even allows for the concepts of spirits and souls reaching another level of existence...at least in broad terms.

At any rate, it is fascinating as a brain exercise.

Sounds hokey to me.

So who (or what) is programming this hologram? I need to send a request for a 6-figure a year career and a smokin’ 40-something redhead as my main squeeze.

God is.

Not being silly but actually serious. God has created this Universe. Why is it not possible that God has complied with a basic set of rules and tools to do so.

We do not know the nature of God. All we know is that He is all powerful and omnipresent. He is the Creator and the Destroyer. He is the Alpha and the Omega. Nothing in this article would take away from God as He has been revealed to us.

Wow, do we think alike! Except I could substitute a Brunette or blond for the redhead if I absolutely had to!

It also gives an entirely new perspective on the line, “For now, we see through a glass, darkly.”

This is based on extensive theoretical work by a variety of physicists and preliminary but compelling evidence from an incredibly sensitive, expensive, and elaborate scientific experiment.

So is the AGW hoax ... And surly they didn't spend the 10s of billions these AGW hoaxers have wasted.

I read enough to know what puffery is. It's free country right now, believe what you want, when the proof arrives, I will look at that. I don't discount the possibility, I just say prove it.

I saw a UFO once ... And I have my own hypothesis, which I can't prove, about UFOs.

Did you know that Einstein refused to believe in the notion of the expanding universe?

I agree whole heartedly. The problem is that many people think that God is magic. But there is no such thing as magic. For God to do what He did, he created a Universe with in built physics and math.

If anything, by finding proof of our "artificial" creation, we give proof to a God Creator (as you elegantly put it)

Biblical creationists can’t possibly compete with atheists/agnostics when it comes to believing in absurd things with blind faith.

I agree with you in your point, but I love this kind of stuff. I think it's great that God allows us to find out more about the universe, and it all points to Him. It just makes me realize how *little* we understand, and how great God is. (And to think He became one of us!)

This article fascinated me because I instantly thought of Plato's Forms. Which also reminded me (a little) of Paul's saying "Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known".

(From Wikipedia -- I know, not the best reference, but the most handy):

"A Form is aspatial (outside the world) and atemporal (outside time). Atemporal means that it does not exist within any time period. It did not start, there is no duration in time, and it will not end. It is neither eternal in the sense of existing forever or mortal, of limited duration. It exists outside time altogether. Forms are aspatial in that they have no spatial dimensions, and thus no orientation in space, nor do they even (like the point) have a location. They are non-physical, but they are not in the mind. Forms are extra-mental.

A Form is an objective "blueprint" of perfection. The Forms are perfect themselves because they are unchanging. For example, say we have a triangle drawn on a blackboard. A triangle is a polygon with 3 sides. The triangle as it is on the blackboard is far from perfect. However, it is only the intelligibility of the Form "triangle" that allows us to know the drawing on the chalkboard is a triangle, and the Form "triangle" is perfect and unchanging. It is exactly the same whenever anyone chooses to consider it; however, the time is that of the observer and not of the triangle.

The pure land

The Forms exist in a rarefied sector of the universe.

But the true earth is pure (katharan) and situated in the pure heaven (en katharōi ouranōi) ... and it is the heaven which is commonly spoken by us as the ether (aithera) ... for if any man could arrive at the extreme limit ... he would acknowledge that this other world was the place of the true heaven (ho alethōs ouranos) and the true light (to alethinon phōs) and the true earth (hē hōs alēthōs gē)."

“I find it curious that a science publication will give time to this puffery but not to debunking the AGW hoax”

Scientists mostly live off grant money. Grant money is awarded based on the most current, trendy, hopes and fears.

Scaremongering sells.

["If the GEO600 result is what I suspect it is, then we are all living in a giant cosmic hologram."]

I wonder if it looks anything like a yellow submarine.

Good points, sad but true.

However, and there is just one however, having worked the grant industry for some time, the science types will only whore for the hoax as long as their fellow scientists go along. I believe we have reached now critical mass, and the hoax is being openly laughed at. All a scientist has is his reputation, and once significant number of fellow scientists are scornful of the lack of real science in the hoax, it will fail. Regardless how much money is offered up as payoffs.

That's why the sites on the network that are not funded by grants are so effective.
