Our world may be a giant hologram
New Scientist ^ | January 15th, 2009 | Marcus Chown

DRIVING through the countryside south of Hanover, it would be easy to miss the GEO600 experiment. From the outside, it doesn't look much: in the corner of a field stands an assortment of boxy temporary buildings, from which two long trenches emerge, at a right angle to each other, covered with corrugated iron. Underneath the metal sheets, however, lies a detector that stretches for 600 metres.

For the past seven years, this German set-up has been looking for gravitational waves - ripples in space-time thrown off by super-dense astronomical objects such as neutron stars and black holes. GEO600 has not detected any gravitational waves so far, but it might inadvertently have made the most important discovery in physics for half a century.

The theories that reality/universe is a hologram get a bit of a boost. Interesting reading at any rate.

Oddly enough, when I’m hung over I don’t feel like a hologram...

Biblical creationists can’t possibly compete with atheists/agnostics when it comes to believing in absurd things with blind faith.

I enjoy gravitational theory, I really do. I also look for lost money where the most light is.

So who or what is running the hologram generator?

The Universe is hard for most people to comprehend. Heck Obama voters may not even know we are standing on a planet that goes round a nuclear furnace. Or the output of the nuclear furnace may not be, imagine that, a constant.

I find it curious that a science publication will give time to this puffery but not to debunking the AGW hoax. For instance, publishing the different laws of physics, thermodynamics and chemistry that need be violated if the AGW hoax is true. Strange wouldn’t you say.

Me, the Universe is what it is. And we may not know what that is.

Again, another Freeper has hit the nail on the head!

So you are behind the curtain, expose yourself.

The last time I did that, I spent the night in the Drunk Tank ;)

So do you use the term "puffery" to describe things you don't understand?

No, I think puffery is stuff that fills magazine pages. As opposed to real science, it’s mostly imagination.

I don’t pretend to understand the Universe as hologram.

I have been following this for a while and this has garnered considerable attention lately (even InstaPundit linked to it)

There are two ways to look at this. One is that our physical Universe is as it seems it is. I consider this to be the equivalent of Newtonian Physics

The second is that we PERCEIVE the Universe a certain way (and it is perfectly fine to do so) but the actual laws of the Universe, the state of the Universe and existence of the Universe is a lot more complicated that a “casual” observer would perceive. This is the equivalent (in a metaphor) to Einstienian Physics

For those of us that believe in God, this does not (IMHO) preclude God. We all know that God has mysteries that us humans cannot comprehend. Why can this not be one of them.

I dunno, this actually fits with GOD creating the universe very well theoretically speaking.

So who (or what) is programming this hologram? I need to send a request for a 6-figure a year career and a smokin’ 40-something redhead as my main squeeze.

No, I think puffery is stuff that fills magazine pages. As opposed to real science, it’s mostly imagination.

This is based on extensive theoretical work by a variety of physicists and preliminary but compelling evidence from an incredibly sensitive, expensive, and elaborate scientific experiment.

Or did you not bother to read the article?
