NYT reporter warns of one-term Obama
politico.com ^ | 1/11/09 | Alexander Burns

Posted on 01/11/2009 8:03:00 PM PST by melt

White House reporters for The New York Times predict that the market collapse will force President-elect Barack Obama to abandon for now many of his campaign promises.

If his stimulus plan "doesn’t work out, he may very well be a one-term president,” said Jeff Zeleny, who covered Obama’s campaign. “It’s hard to imagine that he could be reelected if the economy’s in the exact same position four years from now.”

“A lot of the things he said on the campaign trail you can now dispense with,” said correspondent Peter Baker. “For the moment he has to focus on the economy.”

The reporters, gathered at a Sunday afternoon panel at the New York Times Center in New York City, largely concurred with the assessment that turning around the economy now trumps the issues Obama focused on from the stump until the market meltdown in August.

Baker suggested Obama would tackle smaller-scale issues related to his major agenda items as a kind of political “down payment” on his promises, for now would retreat from even some of his firmest pledges.

“You’re not going to see universal health care, I don’t think, this year,” Baker said. “You’re not going to see a cap on carbon emissions, as he has promised, probably, this year.”

And for all of his campaign trail talk about collective sacrifice, Baker observed, Obama has seemed reluctant to call for austerity in a challenging economic moment.

“He hasn’t asked anybody for sacrifice,” Baker said. “His whole economic package is about giving things to people.”

Actually, it could be a two-term Obama: one in the White House--- the other in the Big House...

A one term president? I was hoping for a shorter period in office due to impreachment or resignation. I suppose if we have to put up with him for a full term we’ll survive, but I would prefer not to.

As soon as we prove he isn’t even eligible to be President he will lose that second term

No way will he slide by next time without revealing his birth certificate. This stuff will snowball. 0bammy’s best bet is to kill to talk radio otherwise he is a one-termer

Well, the John Galt investors and entrepreneurs are certainly going to sit and wait until assh*le and his party are out of office.

As soon as the polls indicated that the Obamination and his corrupt party were going to clearly win, the US and world economy totally tanked.

After he completely destroys our security and our military and we suffer another attack worse than 9/11, he’s out and he will drag all his Liberal sleaze cohorts in the Congress with him. They will all have American blood on their hands.

His economic stimulus package won’t have us in the same position in four years. We will be worse off than we are now. These blowhards think they’re the smartest people in the room. Their economic policies are based on lies and wishful thinking.

After he completely destroys our security ...

Take security into your own hands. Buy guns and ammo. If that becomes "difficult" for some reason, make them yourself. You'll really need them then.

Frankly, I think he and the press will probably blame the whole thing on Bush. And I don’t see why that won’t very likely work. After all, FDR and the press blamed the last Depression on Hoover, and even though FDR kept making things worse and worse, the voters just loved him.

Actually, how about ZERO term.

Since he’s ill-equipped to deal with all or any of the problems facing the country (and by extension, the world), he should be smart and kind enough to get out of the way and allow somebody else in there that knows what he or she is doing. Even if it is somebody else on the democratic party side.

You, know, its “for the greater good” of the country.

To start with, since so many people are experiencing such misery in the country, he should forgo that “inauguration” thingy next week and tell the American people:

“My fellow Americans: with the country in a bad state at the moment, and with so many Americans losing their jobs, and so many companies going out of business, this is not the time for celebrations. Therefore, I’m thankful for having been elected, but I have some very pressing business to take care of and I need to get to work immediately. Celebrations should be conducted only when the time is right and only when the country is well on the way to recovery. I’m sorry, but I can’t with any kind of clear conscience go through with my inauguration celebration. Thank you, and good-night. “

I have believed this since watching his "victory" speach on election night. Pure deer in the headlights. Its one thing to go around shooting your mouth off and blaming Republicans. Its another to have to actually perform. And, this guy has NO track record of performing or leading anything.

The Peter Principle in action! And... Putin knows it...

I've been reading European and Asian press for some time now. MUCH more accurate coverage of the mess we are in.

It is horrifying how bad the American "press" has become. Its all liberal BS all of the time. Worse than Pravda in the "glory days." Liberal education has destroyed America.

“A lot of the things he said on the campaign trail you can now dispense with,” said correspondent Peter Baker. “For the moment he has to focus on the economy.”

So, let’s get this straight. Obama is an incredible genius. Yet, during the campaign while most of us were starting to hunker down because we saw the big train coming down the tracks, Barack Baby was still making promises as if there was no tomorrow?

So, either he is dumb as a brick OR he is a big glib liar. (Or maybe both.)

The conservative media needs to learn this sentence and repeat it at every chance: the 110th Congress was controlled by Democrats and they control the purse-strings.
