Romney Rejoins Marriott Board
Mormon Times ^ | Jan. 10, 2009 | Michael S. Rosenwald

Posted on 01/10/2009 4:40:52 PM PST by Colofornian

WASHINGTON -- Former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate Mitt Romney has been reappointed to Marriott International's board of directors, the Bethesda, Md., hotel company announced Wednesday.

Romney, the former chief executive of Bain Capital, served on Marriott's board for 10 years before resigning to run for governor in 2002. He was also chief executive of the Salt Lake Winter Olympics Organizing Committee. At Marriott, he will chair a newly formed finance committee, overseeing the company's financial performance and how it spends money.

...

The Marriott and Romney families, both devout Mormons, have been close friends for decades, and they have summer homes nearby each other on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire...Marriott family members and other company executives contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to Romney's recent presidential bid.

"It is a great privilege to be asked to rejoin the Marriott board and I look forward to serving once again in that capacity," Romney said. "Marriott became one of the world's leading hotel companies because of its emphasis on service, quality and innovation. That same spirit will keep the company thriving, even during challenging economic times."

...

Although Romney has sent signals that he hopes to have a future in politics, his reappointment to Marriott's board will no doubt have tea-leaf watchers at the company wondering whether he is a candidate to replace Bill Marriott as chief executive...

From the article: At Marriott, he will chair a newly formed finance committee, overseeing the company's financial performance and how it spends money.

Hmm...Will Romney help end the Marriott's long-standing ties to being the porn industry? (He didn't before when he was on the Marriott board) The Marriott has tied itself to being the porn industry since at least 1990 when it began making $ from pay-per-view porn.

What's ironic in all this is what the same publisher (the Deseret News, which puts out the Mormon Times) said about Romney's connection to Marriott back in July 2007:

Pornography taints everything it touches. Mitt Romney should have understood that. So should the Marriott Corp. and other hotel owners who offer hard-core movies in hotel rooms.

Romney caught a bit of flack last week because he spent nearly 10 years on the Marriott board and yet never tried to reverse the company's policy of providing pornography on demand, something J.W. "Bill" Marriott Jr., defended in a 2000 letter as being economically important. The corporation controls only a few of the hotels with its name on them.

For a presidential candidate who has railed against pornography, this is not entirely insignificant. Even if the subject never came up at a board meeting, one can argue that at least part of the $25,000 plus stock he was paid annually for his board membership came from the money some hotel guests paid for access to the films.

Make no mistake about pornography's influence on society. A recent report from the American Psychological Association drew strong ties between pornography's pervasive influence and the "sexualization" of girls and women. This, the report said, has resulted in greater societal sexism; "fewer girls pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics; increased rates of sexual harassment and sexual violence; and an increased demand for child pornography."

If someone is a paid member of a corporation's board of directors, he bears considerable responsibility for the actions of that corporation. If he doesn't even stand in opposition to those actions, he is undeniably culpable for them.

Putting the religious debate aside for a moment, doesn't Mitt Romney's continuing track record of liberal activities when considered against his recent conservative rhetoric expose him as a political fraud?

This particular topic just might have the potential to unite the blindly loyal LDS crowd with the pro-porn libertine rabble. That would be something to see!

USA has morphed slowly but surely into a land of dummies. Why else would they elect Zero who has never run anything in his life as an executive.

I would have felt much more confident in a Romney presidency to revive the economy. Buy hey, most people being dumb benefits me. How else can I have become so rich if I had to compete with more people smarter than me.

I am basing my investment decisions by counting on Zero to screw up the economy a lot more. Come 2013, and I hope to be laughing all the way to the bank. Those ultra short ETF’s are fantastic in this climate.

But I have no problem with either of them.

Forget about Lake Winnepesaukee for just a moment. And even as we talk about Romney, could somebody please clue me in why the following linkage exists?

Wikipedia tells us: Marriott is currently serving as an Area Seventy and is a member of the LDS Church's Sixth Quorum of the Seventy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._W._Marriott,_Jr.

So, here we have a corporate procurer of the porn industry, who has ensured that his travel-porn industry rakes in millions of porn $ for both Marriott and the porn industry who supplies them with porn films. (What exactly is all that different between a man who rents a porn film from the adult bookstore & a male traveler who rents a porn film from Marriott & Romney?)

Then Marriott turns around and tithes 10% of his porn profits to the LDS Church??? And then the LDS Church says, "Oh, I guess we need a porn industry rep as part of our hierarchical leadership!!!" ("That way, we can keep up our anti-female posture portrayed in the Book of Mormon...where specific women are hardly even mentioned...and given scant attention at that")

And Mormons just sit back and say, "Oh, this is all interesting????"

And Romney supporters? (What do they say?)

Romney Criticized for Hotel Pornography

By GLEN JOHNSON
The Associated Press
Thursday, July 5, 2007; 5:01 PM

“BOSTON — Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney, who rails against the “cesspool” of pornography, is being criticized by social conservatives who argue that he should have tried to halt hardcore hotel movie offerings during his near-decade on the Marriott board.....”

Looks like he wants to pick up where he left off.

Passing over Romney for Palin was the only good move McCain made in his campaign. I cast the ballot for Palin. Had it been Romney instead, there's no way I could or would have marked McCain in the ballot box. Been there, done that. Definition of insanity and all that.

No. Porn being available in hotel rooms is not going away.

It depends on the hotel/motel and the room. Omni doesn't carry porn. Travelodge in the UK dropped porn. I think I heard a reference once that cleanhotels.com has about 16,000 (?) individual motels & hotels who don't carry porn.

So what you say is at best a half-truth...and we all know half-truths fall under the "mistaken notion" or worse, "lie" categories. The fact is, in the U.S. alone, hundreds of thousands of individual rooms in the hotel/motel industry offers 0 PPV porn.
