It was very nice of Google to apologize to China this week for allowing ’smut’ links to appear in its search listings. The question is, did Google actually make any effort to modify its search listings in China? Search results for the word ’sexy girl’ causes one to wonder if Google was simply giving lip service to the Communist giant...

With hundreds of millions of men that won’t find girlfriends or wives, China would be nuts to stop the porn.

Was the phrase ‘lip service’ really the only option for an article on the porn industry?

Doing searches in Chinese on google.cn yields much tamer, all-Chinese (nationality and language) websites. I suspect that’s all the authorities are targeting, since very few Chinese are functional in English.

Don’t get me wrong - I know a lot of people who have had classes in English, but none functional enough to do web site searches. Most don’t even know that there is a difference between censorship for foreign and domestic language websites. Similarly, few care to learn foreign viewpoints. In that sense, they are the polar opposite of some Americans, for whom the foreign viewpoint is the only one that matters. The Chinese viewpoint isn’t so much communism as much as the kind of ethnic of parochialism you find in the Arab and Muslim world with regard to things like 9/11 or Islamic terrorism.
