Confiscated Intelligence Map from Hamas Hamas turn a Gaza neighborhood into a warzone.

This map, confiscated Wednesday (Jan. 7) by IDF paratroopers operating in the north of Gaza, shows how Hamas uses an entire neighborhood, rigging it with explosive devices and putting the entire civilian population at great risk. The map shows the al-Tatraa neighborhood in Gaza City divided into three areas of operation (red, blue and green). The dots on the map indicate where Hamas operatives had planted a variety of IEDs (improvised explosive devices), with the colors indicating the type of IED. Additional marks show sniper positions next to mosques. Next to the entrance of the el-Tawid mosque near to Shauuda Plaza at the top left of the map there is a sniper posting with marking indicating the direction of fire marked on the map. At the bottom center of the map there is a gas station where Hamas planted an IED which, if activated, could cause a very large explosion throughout the neighborhood.

An overall study of the map demonstrates how Hamas deliberately uses civilians, using them as live targets and hiding behind them; they plant IEDs at the enterances of homes, they booby trap homes and they use places of worship, all with no regard to collateral damage or civilian lives.

Malicious Code Circulating via Israel/Hamas Conflict Spam Messages

US-CERT is aware of public reports of malicious code circulating via spam email messages related to the Israel/Hamas conflict in Gaza. These messages may contain factual information about the conflict and appear to come from CNN. Additionally, the messages indicate that additional news coverage of the conflict can be viewed by following a link provided in the email body. If users click on this link, they are redirected to a bogus CNN website that appears to contain a video. Users who attempt to view this video will be prompted to update to a new version of Adobe Flash Player in order to view the video. This update is not a legitimate Adobe Flash Player update; it is malicious code. If users download this executable file, malicious code may be installed on their systems.

US-CERT encourages users and administrators to take the following preventative measures to help mitigate the security risks:

Install antivirus software, and keep the virus signatures up to date.
Do not follow unsolicited links and do not open unsolicited email messages.
Use caution when visiting untrusted websites.
Use caution when downloading and installing applications.
Obtain software applications and updates directly from the vendor’s website.
Refer to the Recognizing and Avoiding Email Scams (pdf) document for more information on avoiding email scams.

Iranian Speaker Meets Hamas Leader In Damascus

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani met with Hamas political bureau head Khaled Mash’al in Damascus January 7, to discuss the latest conditions in the Gaza Strip.

The meeting was also attended by several high-level Hamas officials at the Iranian Embassy in the Syrian capital.

The meeting stretched into the early hours of January 8, with no details emerging from the deliberations.

Earlier, Larijani met with leaders of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Larijani also met with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad on January 7.

He is the second Iranian official to visit Syria since Israel’s ground invasion of Gaza began January 3.

Iranian Supreme National Security Council secretary Saeed Jalili met with Syrian leaders and Hamas and Islamic Jihad officials in Damascus earlier this week, before Egypt announced a plan for a truce in Gaza brokered by France.

Hamas said it was looking at the plan.

Asia Times Online investigations, including interviews with people associated with al-Qaeda, reveal that the central leadership of al-Qaeda, sitting somewhere in the tribal areas straddling Pakistan and Afghanistan, sees the Gaza conflict as a major opportunity to inflame the war theater in Gaza and make it a permanent trouble spot for Israel and Egypt, just as al-Qaeda-led areas of conflict have created seemingly intractable difficulties for Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Capitalizing on the Gaza unrest would be consistent with al-Qaeda’s vision of reviving a caliphate to centralize Muslim resistance in its capacity as a non-state actor.”

While trying not to stoke the controversy, the Catholic Church was deeply uneasy with the mass prayer outside the Duomo, which is the world’s largest Gothic cathedral and the third-largest Roman Catholic church in the world, after St Peter’s in Rome and Seville cathedral.

An editorial on the website of the Diocese of Milan said prayer was a universal human right but that Saturday’s demonstration contained elements that were alien to faith and religion.

Around 5,000 Muslims, most of them immigrants to Italy, took part in the march, with some carrying banners depicting the Star of David defaced by Nazi swastikas.”
