Canada expels US woman deserter
BBC ^

Posted on 01/07/2009 7:35:28 PM PST by traumer

Canada has ordered the deportation of the first woman US soldier to have sought asylum in the country to avoid being deployed to Iraq.

Kimberly Rivera, a mother of three, had requested permission to remain in Canada on humanitarian grounds but her appeal was rejected.

She could face up to five years in prison when she returns to the US.

Some 200 deserters from the US military are believed to have fled to Canada, some living incognito.

Mrs Rivera served in Iraq in 2006 but deserted a year later after refusing to be redeployed.

The War Resisters Supporters Campaign, who are backing Mrs Rivera, said her experience in Iraq was "a huge awakening" which convinced her that "the war was immoral and that she could not participate in it".

Mrs Rivera and her family have been told they must leave Canada by the end of January unless the court order is reversed.

Last year, the Canadian parliament passed a non-binding motion granting asylum to deserters from the Iraq war.

But correspondents say the governing Conservatives opposed the motion, not willing to risk upsetting Washington over the issue.

My suggestion is she pack light. Leavenworth gets hotter than all get out in the summer.

You want to have the US Government train you, feed you, and house you and then *HORRORS OF HORRORS* you may need to fulfill the directives of the CIC.

I think Canada has finally got it right — thanks guys.

Deserters should be executed, but that hasn’t happened in many years.

Gee, it’s so sad to see a poor draftee handled like this.

What? She volunteered? She wasn’t drafted?

If Ms. Riveria had the strength of her convictions, she would’ve done the honorable thing and jointed the Taliban.

convinced her that "the war was immoral and that she could not participate in it".

OK, then why flee to Canada?

Why not stand up and face the consequences?

I am reminded of Muhammed Ali, he felt the same why, but at least he stayed in the USA and faced the repercussions of his actions.

Agree with him or not, he stood his ground and he accepted the consequnce of his actions.

Revoke her US Citizenship and let Canada keep her.

But Canada doesn't want her, either. Perhaps Iran would take her?

Her freely given oath obviously meant nothing to her.

Knowing this, who would trust her in the future?
Marriage vows are similar in their absolute nature

She thought about the military again. The Army offered job security, sign-on bonuses, a food and clothing allowance, medical benefits, housing allowance, "Everything I needed, they had. It's the best form of socialism" she thought.

-- Kimberly Rivera, on why she joined the military.

I suggest she use the example of Desmond T. Doss if she finds war immoral. Desmond T. Doss

What to do if you conscientiously object.

I meant making Canada keep her as a punishment to her, not Canada! It is good to see Canada not letting these deserters hide out from justice. I suspect 99% of them fled because serving a year tour in Iraq sucks and is inconvenient rather than any moral objections.

"Everything I needed, they had. It's the best form of socialism" she thought.

Until they expected her to honor her side of the contract. Just like any other socialist, she wanted to be "taken care of" with no cost to herself.

You can’t “conscientiously object” in a volunteer army. I have a Seventh-Day Adventist friend who had joined the Coast Guard and had an epiphany about 1 1/2 yrs into her service and they discharged her with a General Discharge, IIRC. But that was pre-9/11, IIRC.

Considering that Canada has troops over there and has its own losses from the war, I wouldn't think they'd be too kindly disposed to some female GI from the US who can't cut the mustard.

I have trouble commenting on these things as I am not nor have I ever served in uniform (though I plan on it once I get my weight down to fitness standards).

However, this just really really pisses me off. No one forced her to join. And it's funny how all of a sudden the war became immoral when it conflicted with her life priorities.

If she honestly had a sudden change of heart on the war, she should of stood and faced her licks and present her case. Worse case scenario she does some time in the brig and a dishonorable discharge. It's not like the Military was going to put a hood over her head shove her on a plane with a parachute and a rifle and kick her out somewhere over Iraq or Afghanistan.

But no like a coward she fled to Canada hoping they would take pity on her and grant her asylum and then she could live off of their welfare state without ever being asked to do a damn thing.

What kind of example does this set for her kids? That the way out of a problem is cowardice and theft (which is what she committed by violating her service agreement)?

This might be harsh but they would have been better off with a dead hero of a mother who fought and died in the service of her Country then a coward of a mother who turned her back on her obligation to her country and instead of facing her lumps fled like a baby and now will subject her kids to a media circus and a long and painful trial.

No one forced her to join the Military. If she wanted a job with sweet benies there was always the postal service.

I admire Doss. He had the opportunity to duck out using his religion, but insisted on staying. His actions as a medic were awe inspiring and exhibited incredible bravery.

Not that many conscientious objectors really are, but he really was, and yet still insisted on serving honorably.

During the days of the draft, a lot of SDA's chose to be medics or other non-combat roles (such as Project WhiteCoat) rather than flake out of service altogether. We have a family member who was a part of Project White Coat. It messed him up a bit.

I don’t know why she went through the trouble of running to Canada. All she had to do was start getting in trouble and get administratively seperated. Or-—claim PTSD and get some psych to label her non-deployable. There’s no need to run anymore.

Don’t want to go to Iraq, don’t enlist. Seems simple to me.
