Cheney: I'm actually 'loveable' By: Andy Barr January 7, 2009 07:09 PM EST

Vice President Dick Cheney said Wednesday that his image has gotten a bad rap in the press and that he is in fact “a warm, loveable sort.”

Cheney conceded in an interview with CBS radio that he sometimes expresses himself “rather forcefully toward some of my compatriots, like Pat Leahy from Vermont” but dismissed as a caricature the idea that he is a “Darth Vader-type personality.”

“I think all of that’s been pretty dramatically overdone,” the vice president said. “I’m actually a warm, loveable sort.”

Cheney also insisted that his influence within the Bush administration was overstated throughout the past eight years. “The notion that somehow I was pulling strings or making presidential-level decisions. I was not,” he said.

“There was never any question about who was in charge. It was George Bush. And that’s the way we operated. This whole notion that somehow I exceeded my authority here, was usurping his authority, is simply not true. It’s an urban legend, never happened."

I would say he’s almost as incompetent as Biden. But Biden tries harder.

I heard Dick Chaney give a lecture at a (notoriously liberal) university about 15 years ago. That one, one by Abba Eban, and a warm-up speech for the Nixon campaign (given by Ronald Reagan) were among the most substantiave and best lectures from politicans I have personally heard.

I absolutely love Cheney. I am glad for once someone showed strength, intellugence , and the most important thing of all grit. The man knows a lot and he knows teh real dangers out there and he is the only one with enough guts to do the dirty work. He was not the mastermind. He was the vice pres and I think he’s pretty loveable mean old bear trying to protect his country!

I vote him lovable, sexy, and good looking.

I think he is very warm and lovable. He can make the strongest of statements without a trace of anger or shrillness. It’s not easy to tell someone they can go “f” themselves in a very patient and calm manner. I think he is amazing.

Gotta say that I surely do love the man! Love his wife too!

I’ve followed his career from the beginning. I believe he is worthy of the respect so many Conservatives have for him.

I prayed that he would be chosen as GWB’s Veep before his name was mentioned as being considered. I think he has done an excellent job. I wish he could’ve been POTUS. God bless him. I thank him for his service to our country.

Even the libnuts who think Cheney’s evil wouldn’t use the word “incompetent” when describing him.

Dick Cheney is a great American. I think he is one of the most brilliant VP’s in history, he actually contributed to running the country without trying to steal the light. I admit, I wish there had been more Cheney in President Bush.

We needed someone confrontational and assertive. As much as I may appreciate President Bush as a Commander in Chief who did a fine job with the military, and a person who brought some class and dignity back to the White House, I wish he had stood up and fought back against the liberal slander. He just took it.

I have major issues with him: his stupidly unreciprocated stance on bipartisanship; immigration, campaign finance reform and non-leadership of the Republican Party.

Even with that, President Bush is to Jimmy Carter as Churchill was to Chamberlain. There is that much difference.

There are things to praise Cheney for and things to criticize Cheney for. Here's where, in my opinion, he failed:
  1. Backed Rumsfeld's "rush to Bagdhad so fast that you can't take prisoners" war plan;
  2. He was part of the administration's total and utter inability to communicate;
  3. He was part of the administration's insane spending problem - especially since he was supposed to be a liaison to Congress;
  4. If he's such a conservative, where was he in the immigration zoo of 2006?!?
  5. He's a bail-out junkie: Cheney Says Congress Failed in Detroit Rescue Effort

The man has remained a conservative in spite of GWB. Cheney has been a success in business and in government. If he has a fault, it is that he has placed the country ahead of personal gain. He has all the attributes that would make him a Great President. I am deeply concerned that anyone who contributes to this forum is so ill informed about whom he speaks.

Well said, it’s nice to see proper criticism of a decent man and good president without the BDS idiocy like “Bush was no different than Carter”.

Agreed on Cheney also.
