all you have to do is watch the fear mongers at cnbc business channel for a few minutes to see what they are doing. i switched to fox business a few weeks ago and it is a world of difference. cnbc is in the business of making news rather tha n reporting it.

I wonder if the press will do an about-face when Obama is sworn in? You know, kind of like how the “homeless” problem vanished instantly when Clinton was sworn in.

The american public is, on the whole, vapid and uninformed. While the media does tend to sensationalize there are plenty of sources of good information if you bother to look.

they all seem to recognize media bias, but seem to discount its influence, so it seems that the recognition is for overt bias. On the other hand, the more important bias is covert, i.e. stories not covered, like the current homosexual intifada against Democracy in California.

As usual, doesn’t matter what subject the MSM is covering, everything is a major crisis.

Starts every day and lasts until the next day when they pump up the crisis anew.

Fear, hate, death, destruction, and pushing the new latest nanny state loss of liberty for our own good is their creed.

Ha! Yeah right. The same folks that voted for Oblabla.

American public have few things going against them:

1. A vast majority are stupid (or simple uneducated). (how else can you explain voting for Bambam)

2. Apathetic. We moan and complain in forums like FR, but do nothing as a united group.

3. Too engrossed in things that don’t matter, like why did Paris Hilton go on a huge shopping spree in Oz? Who cares!

etc, etc,etc...

And yet, the economy is not really in that bad of shape. GDP has fallen about .3% since the “depression” started more than a year ago. During the Great Depression, it fell by 33%.

Thanks for posting this.

Disposable income (after taxes) of all US households is 3% higher now than it was a year ago. Consumption spending is only 0.5% higher, the savings rate increased by the balance.

Anybody hear anything remotely like that from the financial press?

Isn't everyone supposed to be out of work and aren't those that are working supposed to be so in debt to unnamed magical beings in the sky they can't afford anything and aren't they all supposed to be borrowing, net, not saving?

Oh, and US income from abroad continues to be above US payments to foreigners for their investments here. Narrowly, but positive.

US *asset values* have fallen, as *discounting rates* have swung. But US *incomes* have not. At all. Not a smidgen.

If anything the media is painting a brighter picture than reality would indicate. Note how there are very, very few economists willing to speak on the subject. Most of the interviews are with journalists. That’s because few economists want to go on record with what they really think.

A lot of members of the media, as well as a lot of members of congress, should be indicted for treason; tried, and if found guilty, have all their wealth confiscated, and depending on the level of treason commited, be jailed or be sentenced to hang from the neck, in a public hanging.

I blame them and the banks. Them for sensationalism leading to panic and the banks for not explaining how "credit" works.

My Bank of America credit card says I have a $20,000 limit. Well, they didn't GIVE me any cash, they just said out of thin air that I have that amount of credit. But aren't banks supposed to lend $money$? Where's the money? They use that $20,000 as a line in their list of "assets." Where's the ca$h money? Are they hiding it? Where'd it go? They use 90% of that asset to "create" more credit. But the vault is still empty. Where's the ca$h? Who gets the actual greenbacks? Who's hiding the dollars and cents?

Well, since BoA didn't GIVE me $20,000 to spend or invest, they only gave me "thin air" they call "credit," so I'm giving them "in kind" in repayment. Follow this link to third post down and follow directions there.

I sent BoA more than my minimum payment for over six years. They just got a huge bail out. They should use that money to pay off the credit/unsecured debt of their credit card holders. But they won't. They'll give large bonuses and other "perks" to the same people who created the credit and mortgage mess we're in. Well, I'm rebelling. I'm not paying back any more credit cards from any Banks. What I'm doing is legal, moral and very patriotic. See link above.

At our annual New Year’s Party with couples we have known for decades, one of the moderate liberals brought up the new great depression.

She got my favorite question, “Who do you know, who has lost their job or is making significantly less money or is losing their home due to factors beyond their own actions or failure of actions.”

After a couple of rambling minutes, she and the other moderate liberal couple admitted that they knew no one who fit into that category. The people losing their homes got themselves into the mess by 2nds and home equity mortgages.

One couple known by everyone, had invested big time with Madoff and had leveraged their home based on their expectations on Madoff. Now they have no income and will probably lose their MacMansion.

One of our major shopping centers had traffic jams for the entire week before Christmas. Cops were on hand, giving out tickets for blocking the interesection.

One of the ladies in semi retirement works a couple of days per week for a decades old Kitchen Appliance and goodies store with products ranging from medium price to high $ value. She said their sales were the best in decades if not for ever. They have hundreds of back orders where the customers paid 25-50% as a deposit for the future orders.

Our Walmart and two Targets were busy everytime we went in from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve.

Some stores are closing and most will not be missed. A very crummy Mervyn’s is closing and several excellent national and regional replacements want that building. Many of us want to see a Kohl’s move in.

There are what appears to be increasing numbers of poor, many are apparently illegals not able to find work due to ICE crackdowns on employers. The food bank has run out of food twice due to the ICE crackdowns. The Salvation Army had so many volunteers for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, they were turning down volunteers. As usual they can use more money. A friend who is very involved with the Salvation Army and local charities, said that ICE crackdowns and illegals not going home for the winter is impacting all of the food and temp lodging charities. Also, our lack of Gorebull warming (really cold and wet weather) has driven the hard core homeless from the bridges, empty house, and buildings into the agencies for food and shelter.

Of course the Mediots only focuse on the failure of America to keep the illegals and perpetual homeless housed and fed.

Yep—It has absolutely nothing to do with all the bad debt from the last 10 years! Borrowing increases short term GDP at the expense of later gdp. That time of reckoning is here. We’re (The US) is at 400% debt to GDP (all public & private debt) which is a record—even higher than in 1933.

Only because of the massive $1 trillion dollar borrowing by the federal government and this quarter is projected to be -5 to -7% annual rate and again in the 1st quarter. You do realize that all the borrowing is just stealing gdp from a future period?

Encouraging. I've been believing in a coming economic collapse mainly because of the Fed Reserve printing absurd amounts of new money, which devalues the dollar, leads to inflation, which eventually leads to a contraction and depression.

Can you tell me what evidence there is for a strong economy and why, if it is not nearly as bad as some are saying, a conservative like Glenn Beck keeps talking apocalyptically about a coming economic implosion?

No doubt. Bush is a socialist or socialist-lite domestically. I'm talking about ideology. You don't call the fuel-oil man to put out an apartment fire. That's what the electorate did by voting for Obammie the Commie to “fix” the economy. Well, if they didn't really believe it was broken, I guess they voted for him for other reasons, meaning they are even dumber than I'd estimated.

From Bureau of Labor Statistics Check out U6 12.5%- I wonder if that includes illegals...?

http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t12.htm

Fuel to the fire..200,000 store closings

http://www.startribune.com/business/36859129.html?page=2&c=y

“””””About 160,000 stores will have closed this year and 200,000 more could close next year, said Burt P. Flickinger III, managing director of consulting firm Strategic Resource Group. That would be the industry’s biggest contraction in 35 years. Flickinger expects 2,000 to 3,000 malls to close in March and April.””””

JMHO But I think things are much understated and I am being defensive in this environment. The election over liberals control it all and they will be making the worst decisions imaginable in the coming months. Buckle up and hang on, it’s going to be a rough ride
