WASHINGTON, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Russia is testing a new missile for its formidable S-400 Triumf air defense system that, if it performs according to its claimed specifications, is the most formidable long-range anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense system in the world.

Three-star Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin, the commander of the Russian air force, announced testing plans for the new missile Tuesday, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

The Russians are such duplicitous bastards (I wonder how many people have forgotten that the Soviets were ALLIES of the Nazis at the beginning of WWII, and took part in the invasion of Poland in 1939!), and they scream and moan about us developing anti-missile systems yet they develop the same thing. NEVER trust the Russians. Patton was right, we should have kicked their asses in 1945.

No, it’s a formidable system, even as a standalone pop-up threat. These are the systems that mission planners worry about the most.

i vividly remember dan rather doing a story before the Iraq invasion about how much better the Iraqi artillery was than the US artillery. He was so so sure of his little self.

Hmmm.. dont remember hearing much about Iraq artillery, do you? i mean after the war actually started.

Individually, the Iraqis had some seriously good hardware.
Some of it was better than US standard tube arty.
The problem was:
1. They didn’t have enough of it.
2. They lacked the C3I and targeting ability to use it.
3. We blew it up before they got a chance to fire a shot.

They fought a long, hard war with Iran and had significant opportunities to replace their older Soviet gear with new stuff.

The US Army builds in quantity and keeps its equipment for a long time.

That’s why we win.

I think we now have a reason to push our second rate system up grade through congress. It is suicide to fall behind and become a third rate country under the leadership of the Barak-Harry-Nancy Trinity.

Bailout our defense.

The F-22 has the radar signature of a mosquito. You think they can lock onto a mosquito? And you know, if we can make a manned jet fighter stealthy like that, imagine what we can do with ICBMs and such.

We have heard the same about every SAM system they have fielded. Years ago I was briefed that I should bailout if I saw a SAM-2 headed my way. Pathetic!

In 5 wars over almost a half century we have lost about 500 aircraft. 95% were caused by other than radar SAMs. They have been a 5% annoyance at most.

Godspeed.

“The F-22 has the radar signature of a mosquito.”

Stealth is not invisibility, and the advantage degrades with time. This system will be avoided by F-22’s and other stealth systems, the problem is, that you can’t be certain where they’ll show up because they are highly mobile.

If you fly too close to it, it will shoot you down, even in an F-22.

The S-400 Triumf system is claimed to have the capability to intercept "stealth aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, with an effective range of up to 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) and a speed of up to 4.8 kilometers per second (10,800 mph)," RIA Novosti reported.

Where is that BS meter? It ought to be pegged so far over that the needle is bent.

Do you know how good the 125mm gun on a T-90 tank is?

Have they improved the power of their 125mm tank gun since the gulf war or is it still incapable of fighting a M1A2 or a Leopard 2?

Obviously the T-90’s armor sucks but I wonder about whether the gun can defeat Western tank armor.

Of course if the IDF had been allowed to stick to their original plan which involved using airborne forces to hopscotch OVER, and to simply drive AROUND the Hezbollah Maginot line and take them from behind rather than the ludicrous, stop-start, hey-diddle-diddle, straight-up-the-middle farce that transpired, said ATGW would never have had a chance to score.

I think they lost because they didn’t start with a land attack instead of useless artillery and air barrage. To fight insurgents you have to go in with heavy land forces to clear them out not using JDAMs from thousands of feet in the sky.
