Influx of black renters raises tension in Bay Area

ANTIOCH, Calif. (AP) - As more and more black renters began moving into this mostly white San Francisco Bay Area suburb a few years ago, neighbors started complaining about loud parties, mean pit bulls, blaring car radios, prostitution, drug dealing and muggings of schoolchildren.

In 2006, as the influx reached its peak, the police department formed a special crime-fighting unit to deal with the complaints, and authorities began cracking down on tenants in federally subsidized housing.

Now that police unit is the focus of lawsuits by black families who allege the city of 100,000 is orchestrating a campaign to drive them out.

Yeah, anyone else suprised by this?

Allow people on public money to rent homes in expensive areas subsidized by the governement and crime follows.

What really grabs me is that the AP tries to make it sound like a race issue based on the title, as opposed to what it really is, a government handout issue created by socialist ideas.

Couldn't happen to a nicer cith though!

You are right.

And you are right that it couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of ultra-leftist schmucks. I bet in that whole community now so eager to "control crime", there isn't a single conservative among them. And if there is, I'm sure he/she knows the risk living in enemy territory.

I guess it could only be worse for the Bay area if these blacks also happened to be the “N's” (as the gays called them) who voted Yes on Prop 8.

It's a beautiful thing.

Maybe that’s the cause of white flight.

So the rich white liberals moved ghetto residents into their gated communities and are now surprised that they brought the ghetto with them. Gosh, so am I.

Cry me a river.

Sorry, I like my safe, quiet neighborhood where I can raise my children without having to worry about them surviving.

I'd want then out as well.

And people wonder why I want acres of land between me and my neighbors. It doesn’t matter how nice of a neighborhood you live in because Ozzy Osbourne or PDiddy can always move next door.

You can pick your friends but you can’t pick your neighbors but you can keep them at a distance.

I’ll never forget a story my electrical contractor friend told me. He used to take Section 8 renovation contracts all the time because there were so many of them. As he’s finishing a job in a very nicely, brand new renovated apartment, the tentant slated for that rides his motorcycle into the house and parks it in the living room.

Too right, friend, my wife doens’t understand why I’m willing to commute an hour to get four, five acres of land for our home. The only thing I want to hear from a neighbor is his rooster crowing.

I’ve been worried that the government would create this same situation with all the foreclosed homes that sprinkle all of our neighborhoods.

I don’t understand why they have any grounds for complaint. Shouldn’t the overriding benefit be the influx of “new recruits” from the former prison populace amongst their new neighbors? Picky, picky, picky...

The reason I posted this was that I found it interesting since I’ve seen it first hand years ago in Boston.

I grew up in Roslindale, a town in Boston that was mainly working middle class families.

Then section 8 started moving into the 3 family homes on the street and things went down hill fast, this was in the early 90’s.

Thanks government!

Not in my backyard! Hah!

Too bad they’re not moving into Diane Feinstein’s neighborhood.

Of course, her neighborhood is private with private cops guarding it.

I used to live in an area like this. The whole neighborhood had been gentrified. Everyone had renovated their homes; we chased out the hookers and the drug dealers; but the Washington Post moaned about how the white folk had destroyed an old black area.

But...we still had several projects in the neighborhood. Those places were the sources of nearly all the crime in our census tract.

I have little sympathy with the Antioch white folk. They talked the talk, now let them walk the walk.

They use it as a weapon in our county. Dare to incorporate as a city to avoid the usurious tax levels and lack of service? Bang, Section 8 and Crapitat for Humanity for you.
