RAMADI, Iraq (AFP) Six Iraqi policemen and seven Al-Qaeda militants were killed when the militants attempted a pre-dawn breakout from a police station in the western city of Ramadi, police said.
"During an exchange of fire between prisoners trying to escape and police officers in the station, six policemen and seven prisoners were killed," provincial police chief Tareq al-Dulaimi said.
Three prisoners managed to escape and one was re-arrested, Dulaimi said, adding that another four policemen were wounded in the shootout that occurred at 2 am (2300 GMT Thursday) at Forsan police station in the centre of Ramadi.
Ramadi police have imposed a curfew in the city following the incident, an interior ministry source said, adding that three fugitive Al-Qaeda militants were "emirs" or local chiefs.

Iraq Prison Revolt Leaves 16 Dead, Three al-Qaeda Escape
*****************************EXCERPT******************************
A daring prison break at Forsan police station in the city of Ramadi has left 10 police and six prisoners dead, and some 20 prisoners still on the run.
Early this morning, prisoners killed a police captain with a makeshift knife to get out of their cell, then killed the police chief. They made their way to the prison armory, sparking a two hour gun-battle which ended only when police from nearby stations arrived on the scene to quell the uprising.
They succeeded, but not before 40 prisoners, among them three top al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders, including local chief Imad Farhan (known to locals as Imad the killer), made their escape from the scene. Police say that of the 40, 20 have since been recaptured. The three leaders and the others have vanished into the city of Ramadi, which police have placed under curfew.
They need some executions for these thugs...
They need some sort of system that keeps guns out of the prisoner’s hands. That might help.

Chop ‘em off, maybe? The prisoners don’t need ‘em: the waterboard works just fine whether or not the prisoner have ‘em.
Looks like an inside job.
How did prisoners get weapons?
4 later
Just a thought: Before the Surge, an Iraqi police station would typically surrender without a fight AND turn over their weapons to Al Qaeda. This was undoubtedly a pitched battle. Speaks well of their sense of duty & morale.
Juan Valdez at Halloween?
Indeed they do. Line ‘em up and git rid of them. Pure Vermin.
I could not agree more E. It is nice however to see yet again where Iraqi police are standing up to the plate instead of just letting criminals walk away free.
Looks like they initially had knives....
Their remains should be reused in Purina Hog Chow.
But even pigs have standards.
