Cancer Breakthrough: Researchers can now target only cancer cells (Kanzius Update)
Naples News ^ | 6:12 a.m., Friday, December 19, 2008 | By MATT CLARK

Posted on 12/19/2008 4:22:52 AM PST by Main Street

They've demonstrated the cancer research "holy grail."

In a manuscript published today, researchers say they have successfully targeted and killed two of the most deadly types of cancer cells, colon and pancreatic, using the treatment invented by Sanibel Island and Erie, Pa. resident John Kanzius.

"This is what everybody's been waiting for," Kanzius said. "Can you target cancer cells? And the answer is 'yes.' Can you kill them? Yes. Can you target specific cancers? Yes."

Though the researchers said the destroyed cancer cells were not in animals or humans, the findings published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Experimental Therapeutics and Oncology have shown once again that a man with no formal medical training -- and who continues his own battle with a rare form of B-cell leukemia -- can develop a treatment capable of killing cancer.

The treatment Kanzius first envisioned in 2003 is hoped to one day go like this:

- A patient will be injected with a solution of small pieces of metal known as nanoparticles, which are attached to lab-created, disease-fighting antibody cells capable of targeting specific cancers.

- The gold nanoparticles, which are so small 75,000 to 100,000 of them can fit across the tip of a human hair, will run through the body, the antibodies attached to them hunting for the specific cancer cells being targeted. Once they find the cancer cells, they burrow inside.

- The patient is then exposed to low-frequency radio waves emitted from the transmitter Kanzius' first designed in the garage of his Sanibel Island home. Somewhat like metal in a microwave, which uses frequencies a million times more powerful to vibrate molecules generating heat, the nanoparticles will heat up, killing the cancer cells, but leaving adjacent cells unharmed.

The researchers working with Kanzius have already demonstrated they can kill cancer cells in laboratory animals using the nanoparticles and radio transmitter while leaving adjacent cells unharmed. Those findings were published Oct. 2007. But those experiments had the nanoparticles injected directly into tumors, not targeted to specific cancer cells -- an accomplishment that has baffled cancer researchers for years.

Lead researcher Dr. Steven Curley, a professor of surgical oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, rated No. 1 in cancer treatment by U.S. News and World Report for four of the past six years, told supporters in a letter earlier this month that targeting nanoparticles to specific types of cancers has been accomplished.

"This will be the first manuscript that proves that we can target nanoparticles to a specific abnormality on cancer cells, and increase the killing by getting more nanoparticles into the cells," Curley said.

In the letter, Curley indicated talks with the Food and Drug and Administration are expected to begin soon, possibly within the next few months. When they do, the treatment will be one step closer to human trials, which may occur in months or years.

Also in the coming months, further manuscripts demonstrating the effectiveness in treating leukemia are expected to be released, the letter from Curley said.

Stay tuned to naplesnews.com for additional information on this developing story. In the meantime, examine the Daily News' article and video released in June detailing Kanzius' development of the treatment.

I wonder if this is correct, or just journalistic bungling.

It seems weird that a much-lower frequency, at 1 millionth of the power of a microwave oven, would effect heating in metal particles.

Do the particles say "I guess we're not in Kanzius anymore"?

Sounds like it is kinda right, but the terminology is screwed up. If I remember correctly, he uses 13 MHz, which is far below microwaves. I don’t recall the power output, so I’m not sure about that part. However I don’t see how one frequency can be more “powerful” than another.

It makes sense because the particles are so small. However, it DOES sound like journalistic bungling because we have to assume they are talking about power — frequencies aren’t associated with power. They just are.

Well Gamma Rays , light , and radio waves are basically the same type of radiation just operating at different frequencies. Some have a frequency of billions of times per meters some in tenths of a meter.

If in fact the frequency was 13 MHz, that’s a wavelength of about 23 meters. I find it hard to believe that energy at those wavelengths is interacting with “nanoparticles”.

I’ll be interested to see his results duplicated with living tissue.

Well, I have colon Cancer and it mastasized into Stage 4 in my liver and has just started to spread to my lungs. I was supposed to have only until roughly June 2005, I’m still going strong with regular Chemo treatments. I am going to be 65 in February and I am still going to be working full time. Maybe God has kept me around for this long so that I might benefit from this dude’s machine. We’ll see. I’ll have to contact them and see if they want a subject for their first trials.

Merry Christmas everyone!

That’s why should this country go despotic, banning and confiscation of weapons won’t have the desired effect of keeping folks enslaved...smart folks will just invent other sorts of weapons, exotic and deadly. The despots would find themselves wishing that it was only fat week-end patriots with rifles and pistols they had to deal with!

shown once again that a man with no formal medical training... can develop a treatment capable of killing cancer.

Why would anyone think otherwise? OK, besides the 12 years of gov't school brainwashing.

In school, I could draw circles around the art teachers at a very early age. But I got tired of making popsicle stick houses very quickly, and wanted someone to teach me how to draw! Needless to say, that day never came. And when I graduated from high school, I did what most people suggested, and did something "sensible," like going to engineering school.

Upon graduation, I decided that engineering wasn't for me, and decided to give the art/graphics world a shot. Well, it's been a long ride, but I'm now a successful artist, no thanks to my formal schooling. And I can draw circles around every art-school-trained colleague that I've ever worked with.

“Low-frequency” (LF)is a relative term, as is “High-frequency” (HF). The HF Band is “Low frequency” compared to UHF,SHF and all the microwave bands...........

Milton Friedman opened my eyes to that one. To quote, "when you pay for research, you get research." And when you pay for cures, you get cures.

His idea was for the government to offer a reward, say $1 billion, to the first person to develop a lasting cure for cancer (however defined), rather than pour billions of dollars into pre-approved research.

My grandpa was diagnosed with colon cancer about 30 years ago. He lived for another 20 years, which seems amazing given how primitive cancer treatment must have been. It was finally his heart that gave out.

I understand that it's still RF.

But the lower the frequency, the longer the wavelength, and the more effect on larger objects (and less on smaller ones).

I think he’s using a frequency in the mid HF region, 13-14 MHz. That will burn you if the power is high enough. The old jeep mounted radios we had in the Marines in the early seventies would give you a nasty RF burn if you got too close during transmission. One guy I knew nearly lost his arm............

Depends on the amplitude as well, takes more energy to produce longer wavelengths at a given intensity verses shorter wavelenths at the same intensity. Microwave ovens at 2 gigahertz vibrate water molecules very efficiently while being reflected off metals causing them to damage the oven. Radio waves in the longer wavelengths(13 megaherts) will not vibrate water molecules but are absorbed better by dense metals such as gold because of their larger atomic weights compared to that of water. Increase the amplitude of the 13 megahertz signal and metals such as gold will vibrate in the same way water molecules will vibrate and heat at 2 gigahertz. These nano particles of gold will, under an intense low frequency radio wave vibrate and heat the insides of these cancer cells like water molecules will heat and cook a hot dog in in microwave oven.

You know something else, I’ll bet MRI machines could be adapted and have their magnetic field energy modified to produce these 13 megahertz pulses...great for doing whole body scan where wide spread metastasis is involved.

They’ll have to do some work on the problems of tumor cell death and the control of potential cytokine poisoning and Rhabdomyolysis. Large tumors suddenly being put to death are going to produce potentially toxic “waste products” that can damge the kidneys and cause toxic shock. Patients may need dialysis support temporarily for the aftermath of any large scale cancer treatment.

then why does the article claim "exposed to low-frequency radio waves"?

That will burn you if the power is high enough.

Well, hell, 60 Hz will burn you if the power is high enough.

But part of what I pointed out is the claim that it was one millionth of the power of a microwave oven. That's a milliwatt or so.

The principle of "you get what you pay for" is sound, however it should be obvious that any real breakthroughs in this or any other field of great interest (think energy) would be more than adequately rewarded by the market. So there's no need for a "prize" either.

Government's main role in the market should be limited to providing safeguards and protection against fraud. The problem with 'incentives' and 'subsidies' is that they presume that some omniscient authority has more knowledge than the market itself as to what is 'wanted' and 'needed'. The reality is that instead of imagined philosopher-kings we only have committees of faceless bureaucrats and careerist politicians, all of whom are very much subject to human foibles and failings. Keep the system honest and free and the market will do the rest.
