Nepotism Nation: Dems embrace dynasty politics
Politico ^ | December 17, 2008 | CHARLES MAHTESIAN

Barack Obama's path to the presidency included beating what had been one of the nation's most powerful families. But, in an unusual twist, his election last month is helping accelerate the trend toward dynasty politics.

His secretary of state will be Hillary Clinton, the wife of the former president. The Senate seat she’ll vacate is being pursued by Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of a president and the niece of two senators. Joe Biden’s Senate seat may go to his son Beau. Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar, Obama’s pick for Interior Secretary, could end up being replaced by his brother, Rep. John Salazar.

And Obama’s own seat could go to the son of the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. – less likely now in light of developments in the Rod Blagojevich scandal – or to the daughter of Illinois’ current House speaker.

The U.S. Senate could end up looking like an American version of the House of Lords – and Republicans have begun to take notice.

“Democrats seem to lack a common man who can just win a good, old-fashioned election,” said Rep. Tom Reynolds (R-N.Y.), the former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. “They’ve got seat-warmers, seat-sellers and the making of pillows for the seats of royalty. No wonder the public wonders what’s going on in Washington.”

Democrats subconsciously cling to the concept of governance by a King.

The King was the mommy and daddy, the thinker and do-er.

The King was the ultimate, and the peasants didn’t have to do much but be subservient.

Perhaps you should take a look in the mirror, Tom. While 'Pubbies may not be engaged in dynasty politics, there is a dearth of "common" Republicans "who can just win a good, old-fashioned election”.

Until the GOP recruits and finds people who eschew the "country club Republican" label, support solid conservative values and won't tolerate the Dems repeatedly kicking sand in America's face, the 'Pubbies don't have any moral claim to higher ground.

IMHO, it is not a lack of leadership for persons to fill these seats. It is a lack of money, power and connections due to a lack of willingness to “pay to play” that stops good people from being viable candidates for office.

I would love to run for office. I am an honest, hardworking woman who believes these 4 things will forever prevent me from being elected.

1. My priorities are straight- God, Country, Family, Self is the proper order of them.

2. I temper my ambition with the knowledge that I will face my Maker on judgement day, I will be held in account for every thought, word, deed and omission in my life, and that counts much more heavily when in a position of public trust.

3- I am not rich, in fact, I have struggled financially most of my life due to my decision to stay home and raise my children to be productive citizens (theres that priority thing again).

4. Common sense, good judgement and love of country and your fellow man are no longer the best qualifications for public office. It is all about celebrity, dynastic families, and towing the party line at all costs. I can not, in good conscience do so. I am not a lemming.

God bless America needs to offically be changes to God save America.

As the RATs shred the written constitution, they also seem to delight in making mockery of many of our unwritten rules in the way we govern ourselves. Before FDR, it was just understood that one served no more than 2 terms as president. It was written down anywhere, but that’s what George Washington did, so people observed and respected that tradition. FDR wanted to be president for life, so he ran for a 3rd term and then a 4th. It’s the same thing here - the only thing that matters is power - the obtaining of it, the keeping of it and the using it.

Prepare for the monarchy. First they have to get past our 2nd Amendment.

I have been calling it political nepotism for years.
Name brand politics.

Where are the cries of “chronyism” that were so persistent after hurricane Katrina?

More “Change”.

The “flyover country” attitude is alive and well on this forum.

Chicago (and Illinois) have a cottage industry of family members having jobs in politics. Crook County Pres Stroger got the job from Daddy and has employed many cousins, the Daleys (Dad and brothers in politics), the Madigans (speaker and AG), and many more. Sweet jobs for wives is legendary and well known. In fact Blago was simply trying to get a job for Patty as Barry got jobs for Michelle-Omarosa. This is business as usual - and will be exported to Washington to add to the well-established similar game - Daschle’s wife as a lobbyist, Clintons, Bidens, Kennedys, etc. To be fair, the Bush family fits in there but not with the same blatant patronage as the D side.
