On breaks, Obama will return home to city streets
The Times West Virginian / The Associated Press ^ | December 14, 2008 | Deanna Bellandi

Posted on 12/14/2008 12:56:57 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

CHICAGO — When President-elect Barack Obama heads home for a break from the White House, he won’t go to a sprawling ranch or private seaside compound.

Obama will come back to a crowded city neighborhood, creating different security challenges for the Secret Service and perhaps headaches for his neighbors.

No other recent first family has lived in a city neighborhood like the Obamas. The $1.6 million mansion he and his wife, Michelle, share with their two young daughters sits just off a busy street — a stretch of which has been closed to traffic — and his closest neighbors are just a few feet away.

“My Kennebunkport is on the South Side of Chicago,” Obama said in a recent interview with the Chicago Tribune. “Our friends are here. Our family is here. We are going to try to come back here as often as possible ... at least once every six weeks or couple months.”

His busy South Side neighborhood affords none of the privacy of President George W. Bush’s 1,600-acre Texas spread or President George H.W. Bush’s seaside summer retreat in Kennebunkport, Maine. President Ronald Reagan’s White House in the West was his mountaintop Rancho del Cielo in California. President Bill Clinton moved to the White House from the governor’s mansion in Arkansas.

But Obama is a Chicago transplant whose campaign was rooted in the notion that he’s not like the other guys, and living in an urban neighborhood near the University of Chicago is a symbol of that, said Paul Light, a presidential historian at New York University.

Sure, Professor Light, he's just a guy with a $1.6 million dollar home in an exclusive Chicago neighborhood with a sideyard "donated" by a convicted felon looking for a favor. A real regular guy.

This is going to create a security nightmare for the Secret Service.

This is going to create a broad playing field for Federal investigators. He'll be returning home to his family (the Chicago Machine).

"BS! Obama’s spending this Christmas and New Year’s in Hawaii!!"

I think the article is saying that during the next 4-8 years, "President" Obama, his family and retinue will be returning to Chicago on a regular basis, contrasting it with the Bush family's Kennebunkport and Crawford retreats. Anotherwords, Barack isn't an elitist snob, but rather a "down-home, man-of-the-people" that will be returning to his roots to commune with the peasan...er, common man.

Having said that, Im guessing the sq ftage is comparable to W’s. Plus we, the taxpayers will be spending more to keep him secure in Chitown.

Fitzgerald just bought himself another 4 years in his job. Obama would have to fire him in the midst of controversy let along in the midst of this investigation. He's not that dumb. Had Blagojevich not been arrested as he was, Fitzgerald would be off the case come January. Now, that's just not possible without major repercussions against Obama at the outset of his administration.

Just like that selfish slob Bill Clinton, who used to tie up New York City every year so he could go Christmas shopping.

Of course, Obama is not thinking of the people of Chicago and the major disruptions that will occur to them because of security issues.

Another example of where it’s “Hussein’s Way or the Highway”.

Yeah, Hyde Park is just so, oh so very proletarian and pedestrian. I’ve driven those streets many times and many of the huge houses were built when Hyde Park was a wealthy suburb of the city. Yes, the U. of Chicago always was also open to talented middle class social climbers, and just outside the enclaves of white (and elite black) liberal academics and artsies are desolate blocks of urban wilderness, to be sure. But Zero’s actual neighbors are wealthy and affluent and liberal do-gooders, not boyz from the Hood. He went from his Hyde Park hoity-toity enclave out into the hoods to organize those poor folks, to show them how to rise up against Massah and get “theirs” but “theirs” only a fraction of he and Valerie Jarret and Dr. Whitaker and other affirmative action nouveau riche black Daley plantation overseers have considered to be “theirs” for several decades now.

The “justice” movements of the ‘60s and ‘70s have produced a black elite every bit as snobbish as any of the newly arrived barons of industry were back in the late 1800s or early 1900s. And Zero is actually a bit player on the whole thing—but he had the looks and the charm and the baritone to become the marionette whose strings other people quickly learned how to manipulate.

Po’ boy back in the Hood he is not and never ever was.

“My Kennebunkport is on the South Side of Chicago,” Obama said in a recent interview with the Chicago Tribune. “Our friends are here. Our family is here. We are going to try to come back here as often as possible ... at least once every six weeks or couple months.”

His family is there? I thought most of his family lived abroad? Besides his illegal aunt who lived in a Boston slum, what happened to her by the way?

And of course his friends are there...Bill Ayers, Bernadine Dorhn, Louis Farakkan and a host of other Chicago Thugs.

There's another current thread that mentions that Obama isn't listed as the owner of the home. The construction of this sentence makes me think the author knows this, too.

I believe the money for the Obama's $1.6 million dollar manse came from his two autobiographical books, that many believe were actually ghostwritten by unrepentant terrorist and education professor Bill Ayers. What "executive experience" are you referring to, pray tell?

Not to mention the logistical nightmare that will occur at O'Hare when they shut it down cold every time that plane comes in. He'd be an asshole to repeatedly subject the City to that just for his own pleasure. I'm sure he gets off on the power trip. clinton did.

Yes, exactly. I was actually defending the comfortable getaways of Bushes, and Reagan.

I hate these articles where the presumption is that these people are somehow bad because they can afford to live well.

BO is portrayed in this article as a down-to-earth guy because he doesn’t have a second home.
