And another reason to let GM go bankrupt.

Older cars will become more valuable, as soon it will be impossible to avoid these kinds of privacy-invading gagets on new cars.

One other thing, in addition to the invasion of privacy, what if the system malfunctions, unexpectedly slows the car down, which will result in an accident. You could get killed on a freeway suddenly slowing down — cars could pile into you in seconds, since nobody expects someone in front of them to slow down to 3-5 miles per hour for no visible reason.

+1. I’ll just hang on to my 17-year-old import until it rusts in half.

“Great. Another reason for some people not to buy GM...”

Unless this encroachment on our rights can be defeated electronically on the vehicle, or controlled by the vehicle owner, I would not/will not buy a GM vehicle equipped with OnStar.

I have been considering a luxury car purchase - not Cadillac w/OnStar - likely a Mercedes, Jaguar or BMW. No Japanese cars on general principle.

I have exactly that same mind set- and totally because of On Star.

I have been a GM owner for all of my life, and I will NOT have that technology in my behicle.

If they can shut down the fuel usage, that also verifies for me what I have been saying for years. The On Star system can tell exactly where I am, where I have been, and when. That is way too much like Big Brother for anything I want to pay for.
I will buy an older GM product and have it rebuilt for far less money, and still stay away from On Star.

Here’s more questions:

How often does the owner of the car even know it has been stolen?

How does the driver know that a high speed chase is ensuing?
How do we know for sure that On Star doesn’t have a glitch in their system?

Say you are driving across Wyoming- Montana- Nevada- Nebraska?

You are minding your own business...doing nothing wrong.

The On Star system sends out a signal for a stolen car to crawl to 5 MPH. ONLY- the signal goes to YOUR car- somewhere out in the middle of nowhere, sometimes towns are 200++ miles apart. You are clueless as to why your car is running such a slow speed.....and it takes you hours to limp into the nearest town.
Then what????
