World's most advanced destroyer handed to Royal Navy

The world's most advanced destroyer with the capability to defend the entire city of London from missile attack has been handed over to the Royal Navy.

By Thomas Harding, Defence Correspondent

The Type 45 warship will be a significant boost to the Navy that has suffered severe cuts in recent years bringing the latest in anti-missile technology, radar detection and propulsion.

But HMS Daring will have to wait several years to be able to defend the major aircraft carriers that it was built to support as a major delay for the ships is expected to be announced by the Defence Secretary as part of a cost-cutting package.

At a ceremony on the Clyde the staff from BVT Surface Fleet staff from BVT Surface Fleet's shipyard marched off the vessel and were replaced by its Royal Navy crew at an 'acceptance off contract' ceremony in Scotstoun shipyard

Daring will be the first of six warships that have nearly twice the range - about 7,000 miles - and are 45 per cent more fuel-efficient than the Type 42 destroyers that they are replacing in a £6 billion project.

"As commanding officer of Daring, it is an absolute privilege to be the first captain of a ship in the Type 45 fleet," said Captain Paul Bennett. "Daring is a great example of our 21st century Royal Navy."

Following the ceremony in Glasgow the 7,350-tonne will be ready to leave the Clyde for the first time under Royal Navy command in January.

The Type-45 destroyer will be armed with Aster missiles which are capable of knocking down a cricket ball-sized object travelling at three times the speed of sound.

It is also the most eco-friendly ship ever produced for the Royal Navy,

Sweet! That'll come in useful next time we play Australia, assuming they let us field a Destroyer :0)

Maybe they can use it to shell some of the more islamic cities like Leeds, Birmingham, Londonistan, etc etc.

Why build a billion destroyer when you don’t have the guts to stand up to people pushing sharia in the UK?

Nice...

Does anybody have any data on how well that new angled-construction really works? Does it reduce radar cross-section by a meaningful amount?

Apparently so since all the large navies (including us) seem to to be building them like this now.

Personally I find these new ships to be ugly as sin but it's the functionality that is important, not the looks.

The hull looks hydrodynamic/traditional with a modern stealth superstructure.

Some new ships followed the airplanes where the flat/straight lines were dominant everywhere and computers took care of the aerodynamics.

Exactly! How is all these overpriced hardware going to stop a handful of nuts from setting off bombs in the cities in which they live?

This is a new kind of war, and it isn’t going to be won with lots of huge ships and expensive equipment.

Which, I'm sure is the GREATEST concern for all of those it protects. Right?

Jeez, why can't a good idea be a good idea? Why does it need to be "green-" this or "eco-" that? /rant off.

While the AF loves to pretend that it’s the Service that’s the most on the cutting edge of technology those in the know understand that the Navy is always one step beyond.

A ship without a mission, her carriers won’t be floating anytime soon.

Perhaps a shakedown cruise to the Horn of Africa for some badmashi bashing, old chap.

“A ship without a mission, her carriers won’t be floating anytime soon.”
____________
Maybe she can join up with the Coopreative Engagement Capability (CEC)group of ships we deploy.
________
CEC provides real time integration of fire control quality sensor data into a single composite data source which can be used by multiple CEC ships and airborne units for direct and remote missile engagements. CEC significantly improves battle force anti-air warfare (AAW) capability by coordinating all force AAW sensors into a single real time, fire control quality composite track picture. CEC, when integrated with Anti-Air Warfare (AAW) weapon systems in a Battle Force (BF) or Surface Action Group (SAG), results in a distributed AAW weapon system among participating Cooperating Units (CU’s). Successful AAW in a BF or SAG relies on coordinating and controlling AAW assets among AAW-capable ships. As threat inventories increase and hostile counter-measures become more sophisticated, fleet AAW movements must address individual ship AAW capabilities and coordinate the sensors and weapons of individual ships into a cooperative BF or SAG distributed AAW system. Data sharing from primary AAW sensors of a BF provides timely, accurate data ensuring greater engagement decision and prosecution responsiveness in case of battle engagement. Further, coherent, high-quality sensor data and engagement status information shared among multiple ships automates engagement decisions.

No.

The old 42’s had large sections of aluminium in the superstructure. We learnt useful stuff from the Falklands, like not making your vessels out of something that burns like a roman candle. The US Navy took this on board too.

Oh and if the Argies ever chose to have another go, they would get creamed. Just using what is available at Mount Pleseant.

Beautiful ship, but under armed with 6x8 Sylver VLS for Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles. That is 48 Missiles on a 7,200 ton ship. The Flight IIA Arleigh Burkes like the USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG-81) have 96 Mk41 VLS tubes, capable of launching a SM-2, Tomahawk, ASROC, or 4 Sea Sparrows per tube on a 9,200 tonne ship.
