Blagojevic's wife supported his pay-to-play Senate scheme, complaint alleges
Chicago Tribune ^ | December 10, 2007 | By Stacy St. Clair

An unflattering portrait depicting Illinois First Lady Patricia Blagojevich as a modern-day Lady Macbeth who plotted against her husband's perceived enemies and backed his corrupt schemes emerged in court documents connected to the governor's arrest Tuesday.

Her alleged ambitions and brashness are outlined in a 76-page federal criminal complaint: She helped her husband hatch a plan to sell President-elect Barack Obama's old U.S. Senate seat. She angled to trade her husband's power for lucrative spots on corporate boards. And she unleashed an obscenity-filled tirade suggesting Tribune Co. ownership should "just fire" Chicago Tribune editorial writers if the company wanted the state to help it unload Wrigley Field to ease its crushing debt.....

She just learned from the other first daughter of Illinois Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Hillary used her husband's position as the AG of Arkansas to get a spot on the board at WalMart.

Remember they just ran with what they had in order to stop Blago from selling or taking the Senate seat himself. This has only just begun, there could well be indictments of the Missus as things unfold. As the daughter of a powerful Alderman (who hates Rod now) she’s no delicate flower herself.

My best is she’s in this stuff to her eyelashes. Maybe we’ll even see a RICO?

Get out that popcorn popper!

No, she is not "Serb". She is "the oldest daughter of longtime ward boss Ald. Richard Mell (33rd), bearing witness to the ways of the Chicago Machine since grade school", if you'd read the article.

"Foreigners"? WTF? Rod Blagojevich is American born, and simply a corrupt Illinois politician, period. Curious --did you slam all "the Irish" as "foreigners" when Ryan got arrested?

Oh, I knew that when the first day this story broke, her daddy was crying to the press what "a bad influence Rod Blagojevich was on his daughter" -- yet in fact, her daddy was the longtime politico ward boss who got Blagojevich elected.

The portrayal of her in the indictment douses any inkling that she has a great personality, so that must only mean that she's a da*n fine dancer! Might want to get her tap shoes out of storage...

An “interesting” family of political hacks:

Deb Mell, Blagojevich in-law, activist
December 9th, 2008

http://southernsassoncrime.com/?p=1649

Deborah L. Mell (D.) will start serving her term in the Illinois State House of Representatives in January 2009. Born July 30, 1968, Deb, as she is known, is also a candidate for the US House of Representatives. The 40 year old Ms. Mell is hoping to replace Obama buddy Rahm Emanuel in Illinois’ 5th congressional district. She announced her candidacy for Emanuel’s seat just two days after the chosen one *won* the presidential election.

The openly lesbian Mell is the daughter of long time Chicago Alderman Richard Mell and his wife Marge. She was arrested in 2004 while protesting her inability to get a same-sex marriage license with partner Christin Baker.

Deb Mell is also the sister in law of Illinois Governor Milorad “Rod” R. Blagojevich. Her sister Patricia is the Governor’s wife as well as the mother of his two children, Anne and Amy. As you know, Gov. Blagojevich and his Chief of Staff, John Harris were arrested this morning on corruption charges in Illinois.

Ms. Mell’s father, Richard ( Dick ) Mell was instrumental in Blagojevich’s run for a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives in 1992, which he won.

For Obama and the crew....it isn’t Blago that they need to worry about. They need his wife off this short list of witnesses and “singers”. I’m betting that she is telling the go-between that they have 30 days to get her off the hook or she passes everything she knows over to the feds. I’m pretty sure that the Obama has a list of all the Feds involved and looking for anything to frame them or force them to drop their efforts. I’d have the tape recorder on for 24 hours a day, and waiting for the phone call.

And I’m guessing that Mrs. BHO might not be pure here...time will tell.

Why wouldn’t she think she could (and her opinion should) get a board seat out of the deal since Michelle got her Treehouse board seat with less experience and qualifications? Why else would the Blago’s think it would be Ok to ask Obama for these things unless that is the way Obama has worked in the past. So questions should be asked WHAT MO’s Treehouse board seat (a Walmart vendor) was payback for.

re: Mrs. BHO

It’s been said that Michelle’s BFF is the younger sister of Jesse Jackson Jr.?? I think I saw that somewhere.... that would suggest that it might be hard for Michelle-O to avoid flapping her mouth behind the scenes trying to influence this thing or at least keep track of what’s going on. I’m sure she’s had some “interesting” conversations in recent weeks.

This may have been covered on the other threads, but why did Fitzgerald close down the investigation?

The Gov may have proposed doing something wrong, but he didn’t get a chance to actually do it? Fitzgerald stood by and watched Libby for years. Here he gets excited and files charges before the act.

So what does the gov get prosecuted for? Solicitation? That can’t be as serious as the actual act can it?

Is this because the Gov is not the real target? Is this because Fitzgerals wants the Gov to sing on someone else... perhaps higher up?

Rod Blagojevich is a political scumbag, of that there is no doubt.

But the way that her Daddy went into damage-control overdrive to make he & his daughter look squeaky clean -- which she is obviously not -- told me that this was one salty old political dog who was used to papering over political slime for his own benefit. Anyone truly innocent would have been a dear in the headlights for at least a day.

"This may have been covered on the other threads, but why did Fitzgerald close down the investigation?"

My guess is that the decision was political.

If they had actually waited until Blagojevich put someone in Obama's senate seat, then there would be lots of questions as to how Obama personally got the seat to begin with. And whoever got that seat, whether they'd actually of paid to play or not, would be tainted with scandal.

Last night on CBS news they did a "man on the street" response segment in Chicago on Blagojevich's arrest. One women said, "This is Chicago politics. Do you realize how stupid some politician has to be to get arrested for corruption here?". That pretty much said it all.

While Fitzgerald certainly did his job, I think many people may be overestimating his power. I think that there is likely only so far that he is going to be allowed to go, too, by his own higher-ups.

Something sorta smells funny about this situation. Fitzgerald went after Scooter Libby, a guy well connect to the president. And now he’s afraid to watch the Gov and see where it leads? That just doesn’t compute for me.

I do think your response was logical. It just doesn’t seem to balance with what we’ve seen from Fitzgerald before.

I’d have to think at this point that there are other shoes to drop in matters related to the Gov and peripherals. We’ll see...

I think what happened is that the Chicago Tribune published the fact that Blag was being monitored. Right after that, the information from the monitoring indicated that Rod switched from a senate position selling mode to a legal defense mode.

*** If what they say is true, why isn't she being charged with conspiracy, too? ***

Leverage.
Fitz works in 'mysterious ways' (to some) with his indictment process. Since he hit Chi in 2001, his M.O. has always been the same. He starts out with the corrupt small potatoes and works his way up the ladder, getting convictions and more evidence against the next higher rung along the way.

He did this with the corrupt ex gov George Ryan. He started with lowly clerks at the Drivers License Offices, then some of the Gov's aides and 'cronies', and eventually it led to the Gov himself.

He did the same with the Daley Machine. It started with the 'Hired Truck' scam. And now Daley aides and friends have been convicted. (this investigation is still on going and Daley is looking over his shoulder).

Then he did it with the Chicago Mob. That resulted in all the Outfit Bosses going to prison and clearing up mob hits going back 18 years. (The Chicago Outfit is basically kaput, an empty shell.)

He's also doing it now to the Cook County Board. That's another corruption deal over hiring.

Then he did it with Tony Rezko. That started with other, lower, convictions.

And besides the current Blago arrest and indictment, there's OTHER investigations still ongoing into his administration. He may get indicted again, while he's doing time for the senate seat bribes.

So my bet is he's holding the Mrs over Blago's head. Sing like a bird or the Mrs gets it too.

an aside: A lot of FReepers hate Fitz over the Scooter Libby deal and think he's in the tank for the Dems. Not so, he goes where 'the crime' and evidence leads. And -- Fitz is the BEST thing to happen to Chicago since sliced bread. Fitz makes Elliot Ness look like a traffic cop.

But to be honest, the Scooter Libby thing had me scratching my head.

I am for getting every corrupt politician out of office, I don’t care what their Party affiliation is.

So if Fitz goes after the little fish first, is Blagojevich in your opinion, the big fish or a little fish? Is this the top of the food chain or are there still bigger fish to catch?

*** So if Fitz goes after the little fish first, is Blagojevich in your opinion, the big fish or a little fish? Is this the top of the food chain or are there still bigger fish to catch?***

In this instance (Bribery for senate seat) Blago is undoubtedly a 'Big Fish' (I don't think Barry is involved). And he'll be ratting out everyone under him or next to him if it means saving his wife from prison.

That being said, if Jesse Jackson Sr (daddy) is involved, he'd be 'THE Big Fish'. The World knows Jesse, almost no body knew Blago before yesterday. And since Jesse's hired a Criminal Attorney, it sure looks like he is. if so, Blago will sell him out in a heartbeat.

The thing that gets me, is that Blago KNEW the Feds have been investigating him for a couple years and eventually he'd be indicted (little fish first) for corruption. Yet he STILL conspires to solicit bribes. That is being terminally STOO-PID. Or as some pundits have surmised, he's a sociopath.

(I hope this makes sense. I'm getting a reaction from my medications. And having problems seeing and typing,)

I am stuck with nothing. Didn’t vote for him, don’t live in his state, never wrote anything praising him. Never sent him money. Said from the beginning that he was a scumbag —as a matter of fact, said that he was a scumbag many years ago.

But this article is about his wife who is up to her ears in this — and I didn’t write it.

Try to keep up and at least stick to the subject without trying to shove it into your Albanian agenda.
