SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- President-elect Barack Obama will nominate Nobel laureate Steven Chu as energy secretary and Lisa Jackson to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, according to media reports Wednesday. Obama is also expected to name Carol Browner as energy 'czar,' the reports said. Chu, a Chinese-American, won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1997.

zero better appoint someone to cover up blagogate first!
Oh great! A Berkley nut who wants to “revert climate change”.
Great...an over-educated mad scientist who is trying to “reverse global climate change.”
Before her nomination by Governor of New Jersey Jon S. Corzine, Jackson served as the NJDEPs Assistant Commissioner for Land Use Management during 2005. Jackson headed numerous programs including Land Use Regulation, Water Supply, Geological Survey, Water Monitoring and Standards, and Watershed Management. She focused on developing a system of incentives for stimulating the right growth in the right places. Under her leadership, the NJDEP crafted regulatory standards for implementing the landmark Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act.
As the states chief environmental enforcer, Jackson led groundbreaking compliance sweeps in Camden and Paterson, communities in which the effects of pollution on public health had long been neglected. She launched the environmental initiative following multicultural outreach efforts to inform and involve community residents and businesses. Working with county officials, New Jersey State Police and the EPA, the NJDEP then mobilized more than 70 inspectors to conduct upward of 1,000 compliance investigations in the two cities, the first of a series of enforcement sweeps.
Reading that bio, it sounds like the Republican Filibuster Machine Better Get Cranking for the new “climate change” agenda.
Otherwise, we may all end up living in government approved tent cities.
This is not a good sign...a man who thinks he can control the climate.
Another no energy fruitcake to defend the tax scam
But hey....he fits the quota for Asian staff.
Chu is just like all these other egghead stupid idiots. No Common Sense.
We are in deep trouble.
Don’t you know that Dick Cheney has a hurricane machine he used to start Hurricane Katrina?
As long as he sees technology as the solution to the warming hoax I am okay with it. Better than had Obama picked some kook from the Sierra Club.
Silly. That was Rove. Cheney was responsible for killing refugees in the Louisiana swamps. Cynthia McKinney told so.
Technology to revert a hoax, that will swallow billions of taxpayers’ money to develop.
Forget global warming for just a moment
Can someone say Wen Ho Lee?
Ah, Chu.
Coolest Shirt Award. I saw a group of USC fans wearing these at a USC-CAL game a few weeks ago.

Basically, his staff will actually do all the work.
This is one of the best choices for DOE that we could ever hope for. This is a fabulously good choice, and I cannot believe the clueless troglodytes on this forum who are trashing a great scientist and superb laboratory director.
It is a crying shame that Clinton is making some far better choices than Bush ever thought of.
Just think of it this way we get a climate nut who will know how to work Dick Cheney’s hurricane machine.
We are in deep trouble
My thoughts exactly, with these 2 we get
Laser beams and Attitude
And Browner, Heaven help us.
Oh, Boo.
We, in Michigan, heard that our Governor was going to Washington today to interview for the position. We would have given anything to get rid of her.
We understand your pain.
Was he the Director when the hard drives with top secret information were flying out of the Lab, and the Chinese Commies were looting our secrets, or was that somewhere else? (I seem to recall another Cabinet choice involved in that.)
“As global warming warnings grow more dire, Chu is currently pushing his scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and industry to develop technologies to reverse climate change.”
Great, another over-educated psychopath.
Of course we are the neanderthal troglodytes. Mr Chu who wants to “revert climate change” is a freakin’ genius and the greatest thing since sliced bread. Spare me the crapola.
I’m sorry, but I don’t trust a chinese guy with our nuclear secrets. We learned this the hard way during the clinton admin...
Do you have a source for the claim that Hillary is choosing Obama's cabinet? (or did you mean Bill... or Chelsea??)......
Climate changes. Liberals can’t accpet it.
I for one will do my part to counteract this idiot’s damages to our climate.
Given that it is going to be an Obama administration I’ll take a technology guy over a carbon-tax guy any day. And the guy is in the pocket of BP (oil company).
Just curious, but what kind of person would you feel more qualified to run the DOE, assuming of course your first choise wouldn’t be to disband the DOE.
For too long we over-educated mad scientists have been under-represented in the halls of power. Sure, you'll support us when there's an alien invasion, you need a doomsday weapon to stop the Russians, or when a deadly asteroid is hurling towards the planet, but whenever we ask for the most reasonable demands like plutonium subsidies or low cost Fannie Mae loans for our secret underground lairs in volcanoes we get nothing but scorn.
who is trying to reverse global climate change.
Just induce a meltdown in a small fission reactor and drop it in one of the methane hydrate pools off the coast. The additional methane released into the atmosphere will stave off the coming ice age.
Lisa Jackson to lead the Environmental Protection Agency
EPA is more important than Energy Dept. imo (in terms of which one could eff up the economy more I mean). Never heard of this lady.
I don’t know enough about him yet to have a strong opinion, but I do note that as Director of Lawrence Livermore he has a lot more senior bureaucratic experience than many/most cabinet appointees:
[Wikipedia on Lawrence Livermore Labs}:
Operations and governance
The site consists of 76 buildings (owned by the U.S. Department of Energy) located on 200 acres (0.8 km²) owned by the University of California in the Berkeley Hills. Altogether, it has some 4,000 University of California employees, of whom about 800 are students. Each year, the Lab also hosts more than 3,000 participating guests. There are approximately two dozen DOE employees stationed at the laboratory to provide federal oversight of LBNL’s work for the DOE.
The Laboratory’s 17 scientific divisions are organized within the areas of Computing Sciences, Physical Sciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, and General Sciences. Many research projects are staffed and supported by multiple divisions, with computational and engineering integrated across the biosciences, general sciences and energy sciences.
Berkeley Lab is a multidisciplinary national laboratory located in Berkeley, California on a hillside directly above the campus of the University of California at Berkeley. The site consists of 76 buildings located on 183 acres, which overlook both the campus and the San Francisco Bay.
The Lab, which conducts unclassified research, employs about 4,300 people, including nearly 1,000 staff scientists, 1,000 undergraduate, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and more than 1,500 technical and support personnel. In addition, each year the Lab hosts more than 2,000 participating guests.
What is Obama's name in Chinese characters?
I don't know Chinese but I have a Chinese-English dictionary (Langenscheidt's--PRC characters with pinyin equivalents).
O as first tone (high, level) can be an expression of understanding ("oh!"). O as second tone (sharp rising) is an expression of doubt. Ba as first tone can mean "8" or "scar," as second tone "pull out," as fourth tone (starts high, then falls) "dad," "tyrant," "dam," "stop," or "handle." Ma as first tone can mean "mom," or "wipe," as second tone "hemp," as third tone (falling then rising again) "horse" or "yard," and as fourth tone "curse" or "swear."
Which combination is most suitable? "Oh! Tyrant Horse"? ""Oh! Tyrant Curse"?
I like the idea of "ma" as "horse" being the "ma" of his name, because the same character is used in writing the name Marx.
No doubt the Red Chinese and the Chinese on Taiwan and elsewhere have already figured out an accepted rendition of his name.
How many layers of bureaucracy does O need?
He was born in the U.S., grew up in U.S., attended shcools in U.S. ... or you just automatically disqualify anyone with a Chinese last name?
Wen Ho Lee was from Taiwan. You don’t take chances with nuclear secrets and every Obama pick is suspect.
Can you check to see if he believes in the ethanol scam. As I recall, he may not, which will be interesting given that close advisors to the One such as Daschle are owned by big ethanol.
From the WSJ
“Of course, along with Chus distinguished curriculum vitae comes a record of strong scientific arguments, including a position that may not gibe with President-elect Obamas advocacy of corn-based ethanol. In making the case for grass and waste-based biofuels at a meeting of state agriculture departments in North Dakota this fall, Chu knocked corn ethanol for its up-front energy costs and competition with food supply.”
So no, he is against Corn based ethanol i.e. Burning food for a net loss financed by taxpayer subsidies, but is in favor of other alternative biofuels.
I was talking about Chu, you are talking about Lee. Last I checked, it’s Chu that’s being nominated for Energy Sec, so what does Lee has to do with it?
Again, Chu is born and raised in the U.S., do you automatically disqualify Chu base on his ethnic Chinese last name?
“do you automatically disqualify Chu base on his ethnic Chinese last name?”
yes. Is that unfair? Yes. But the threat of nuclear espionage is much more important than fairness.
FDR’s response was much more extreme.
