Letter: Obama citizenship question
The Chicago Tribune ^ | December 8, 2008 | Greg Stachovic

Posted on 12/08/2008 5:50:51 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

There is a question out there as to whether or not Barack Obama meets the Constitutional requirements to be President. This is a serious issue. If we are not to follow the Constitution then the document is nothing more than a historical piece of paper.

From what I've read there are two questions being raised. One is that Barack Obama was not born in the United States. The other is that he holds dual citizenship. One or the other if true would disqualify Barack Obama becoming our next President. Shouldn't we have an answer now before he is sworn into office? The United States will have a crises on its hand if Obama is sworn in then later proven he did not meet the Constitutional requirements.

Barack Obama needs to address this issue now as ignoring it will not make it go away. Surely he has $10 to pay for an official copy of his Hawaiian birth certificate which he can then show the media or anyone else who questions his citizenship.

Excuse me for being cynical but Barack Obama is an Illinois politician. To go one further he is an Illinois politician who has honed his political skills in Chicago. To go even further his political friends are of questionable character. Therefore, I admit Barack Obama has a long way to go to convince me he possesses the integrity to actually institute political change. If Barack Obama refuses to address this issue in a professional manner then that would only confirm my view that he represents nothing more than the same business as usual politician.

Not all of those who want an answer to this issue are paranoid zealots or Obama haters as portrayed by Eric Zorn in his Sunday (December 7, 2008) column.

That even the U.S.Supreme Court occupants refuse to take the case shows how corrupt from top to bottom the U.S. has become.

i.e. our voting laws....only one small step above Chavez in V elections.

And they were citizens at the time the Constitution was signed.

They did not need to be "natural born"

I honestly feel this is a dead issue and so is the Constitution . . . ask 100 people on the street what the Constitution is and why it’s important to America and 99 people (if not all) won’t have any idea. They don’t teach civics or American history any more to our kids, and most of the rest of us don’t care.

In some ways, the issue may be better resolved after the EC vote than before. If the EC vote for Barack Obama, he can have all the time in the world to demonstrate his legitimacy. If Joe Biden could demonstrate his own legitimacy, then he could be acting President while Obama stalls. There would be no need ever to declare Obama to be ineligible if he were to decide upon something more important for him to do than serve as President.

If Barack were declared to be ineligible for any reason, there would be riots. But if he's told that he'll be sworn in as soon as he authorizes Hawaii to say that their records show he was born in the U.S., then the pressure will be on Obama and nobody else.

Currently, Title 8 of the U.S. Code fills in those gaps. Section 1401 defines the following as people who are “citizens of the United States at birth:”

* Anyone born inside the United States
* Any Indian or Eskimo born in the United States, provided being a citizen of the U.S. does not impair the person’s status as a citizen of the tribe
* Any one born outside the United States, both of whose parents are citizens of the U.S., as long as one parent has lived in the U.S.
* Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year and the other parent is a U.S. national
* Any one born in a U.S. possession, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year
* Any one found in the U.S. under the age of five, whose parentage cannot be determined, as long as proof of non-citizenship is not provided by age 21
* Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is an alien and as long as the other parent is a citizen of the U.S. who lived in the U.S. for at least five years (with military and diplomatic service included in this time)
* A final, historical condition: a person born before 5/24/1934 of an alien father and a U.S. citizen mother who has lived in the U.S.

Anyone falling into these categories is considered natural-born, and is eligible to run for President or Vice President. These provisions allow the children of military families to be considered natural-born, for example.

I don’t think the citizenship issue of the former British Subjects was what was being called into question. It was the fact that someone has edited Barack Obama’s name into wiki under that heading. Of course those in the US at the time of the adoption of the Constitution would be eligible.

It is becoming an interesting mantra of those who try to get this to stop. And I was even mad at these tlaking heads for not weighing in. Then someone posted a possible reason, and while I had even given that reason some thought, coming from someone here helped me see it a little better.

Maybe, just maybe by them NOT saying anything the MSM can’t say radical right wing talk radio is stiring this up.

And at some point people need to think for themselves and make their own choices.

Do you always need someone to follow? Someone to tell you what the issues should be?

If everyone was jumping off a ship into shark infested waters and being eaten, woukd you follow the group our make your own free choice?

If you don’t like what is going on the leave us to our insanity.

Or perhaps it shows how outside the parameters of rational thought this issue has become.

Put aside all of the hype and obfuscation and it's really very simple...and rational.

Obama should do what is required by the Constitution. Provide proof of birth. In the US that proof is a lawful birth certificate. There is nothing complicated or irrational about the request.

What is irrational is the reasoning and efforts of those that refuse to admit this is what should be done. The real question is, why are these people so irrationally afraid of the request for a birth certificate?

Why in the world is this being ignored by the devout right-wing? I don’t understand it . . .

1). They don't want to instigate a riot

2). They don't want to do anything to help bring on the fairness doctrine and an end to their cash cow careers.

3). They don't want to be made fun of.

I don't think any of these reasons are patriotic. They need to stand up for the Constitution and be ready to go down swinging.

“Or perhaps it shows how outside the parameters of rational thought this issue has become.”

Wrong, what is irrational is Mr. Obama’s refusal to produce a simple document.

The whole deal may be nonsense, Mr. Obama may be undisputedly constitutionally qualifed to be president. But why won’t Mr. Obama produce the document that could put this issue to rest. The man is going to be POTUS....he can produce a simply unredacted birth certificate. I can’t tell you all the times I have been required to produce one. Just last summer, as an army reservist, I had to produce one on myself, wife, and son. Why should the POTUS be so above the rest of us common folk? The arrogance (or subertufuge) of the man is maddening.

So you just said you’re willing to base Constitutional issues on whether or not the unwashed masses care about one of the greatest governing documents ever drafted!!!

If the unwashed masses don’t care if the Constitution is violated, I guess it doesn’t matter.
